What is needed for unemployment in California EDD? First-time filer checklist
I got laid off from my warehouse job two weeks ago and honestly have no idea where to start with filing for unemployment. A coworker told me to go to the California EDD website but I didn't even know what information to have ready before starting the application. I started filling it out and got halfway through before realizing I didn't have my employer's address or my exact start date handy. Had to abandon the whole thing and start over later. Can someone just spell out what is needed for unemployment through California EDD so I don't keep messing this up? I feel like I'm flying blind here.

Hey, totally been there. Here's basically everything you'll want to have in front of you before you even open the UI Online application on the California EDD website: - Your Social Security Number - Your full legal name and mailing address - Your phone number and email - Your last employer's name, address, and phone number - Your exact last day of work - The reason you were separated (laid off, fired, quit, etc.) - Your employment start and end dates for the past 18 months - Your bank account and routing number if you want direct deposit - Your driver's license or state ID number If you worked multiple jobs in the past year and a half, have that info for all of them. California EDD looks at a base period going back 5-18 months so they might ask about older jobs too.

AuthorThis is exactly what I needed, thank you. I had no idea they go back 18 months on employment history. I had a temp gig like a year ago that I almost forgot about.

also dont forget if you were paid cash under the table that gets complicated, EDD wants W2 wages basically

Zainab Ahmed
That's a fair point - cash wages that weren't reported to the state can't really be used to establish your claim since California EDD calculates your benefit amount based on wages reported through the Employment Development Department's records.

One thing people always forget - you need to set up a UI Online account BEFORE you can file. Go to https://myedd.edd.ca.gov/ and create your account first. Have a valid email address ready because they send a verification link. The actual application form inside UI Online is called DE 1101I if you want to look it up. Also make sure your browser is up to date, I got an error the first time because I was using an old version of Safari.

AuthorWait so I need to make an account before filing? I thought you could just fill out the application directly. Ugh, one more step.

Yara Abboud
Yeah it's a bit clunky but the account is actually useful once you're approved because you use it to certify for your weekly claims every two weeks. So it's worth setting up properly from the start.

I spent like 45 minutes trying to figure out the login setup. Their site is not exactly user friendly lol

Something nobody mentions enough: you also need to be mentally prepared with your reason for separation because California EDD will ask some very specific questions about it. If you were laid off, they want to know if it was a lack of work situation or if there was any other reason. If you quit, you'll almost certainly go into adjudication which means your claim gets reviewed before any payments are made. If you were fired, same thing - automatic adjudication review. The separation reason affects everything so be honest and specific when you fill it out.

THIS. I put the wrong reason on my application because I wasn't sure how to categorize my situation and my claim got flagged. Took weeks to sort out.

AuthorI was definitely laid off, my whole shift got eliminated so that should be straightforward right?

Laid off due to lack of work is the cleanest situation for California EDD claims. You should be in good shape as long as your wages meet the minimum earnings requirements.

what are the minimum earnings requirements? i never hear people talk about that part

I went through this exact process about four months ago and the part that tripped me up most was actually AFTER filing - the identity verification step. California EDD now requires most new claimants to verify their identity through ID.me before benefits can be released. You'll get a notice either by mail or in your UI Online account. You'll need a smartphone with a working camera OR access to a video call agent to complete it. Make sure you have a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) and be in good lighting when you do the selfie verification. That step held up my payments for almost a week because I didn't realize it was pending.

Miguel Diaz
AuthorOh wow I had no idea about the ID.me thing. Is that mandatory for everyone now?
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
Pretty much yes for new claims filed through UI Online. It's California EDD's fraud prevention measure. Some people get cleared automatically, some have to do the full video verification. Just watch your email and your UI Online inbox closely after you file.

the ID.me thing is honestly a whole separate nightmare. my camera wasnt working and i had to schedule a video call that took forever to get into

ok so I had so much trouble just REACHING someone at EDD when I had questions about what I was submitting. Kept calling and getting busy signals or getting disconnected after holding for like an hour. Someone in another thread told me about Claimyr - it's basically a service that holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you back when an agent is actually available. I used it when I was confused about what documents to upload and got through to someone within a couple hours instead of spending all day redialing. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly wish I'd known about it before I spent three days trying to get through on my own.

AuthorThree days of trying to call sounds like my personal nightmare. Does Claimyr actually work or is it one of those things that sounds too good to be true?

I was skeptical too but I got a callback and talked to an actual EDD rep who walked me through exactly what I needed to submit. It's legit.

To answer the earnings question from earlier - to qualify for California unemployment benefits you generally need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period, AND your total base period wages need to be at least 1.25 times your highest quarter earnings. The minimum weekly benefit amount is $40 and the maximum is $450 per week. Your actual benefit will be roughly 60-70% of what you were earning, up to that $450 cap. You can use the California EDD benefit calculator at their website to get an estimate before you even file.
0 coins
Amina Sy
so if someone was making like $800 a week they'd get around $450? that seems like a big drop
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
Yeah the $450 cap means higher earners take a proportionally bigger hit. It's set by California state law. There are proposals to raise it periodically but that's where it stands now.

Paolo Rizzo
the cap is brutal especially in California where cost of living is so high

Jumping in because I see a lot of people mention the application but nobody's talking about what happens AFTER you file. After submitting the DE 1101I application, you should receive a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award (DE 429Z) within about 3 weeks if everything is straightforward. This notice tells you your weekly benefit amount and the length of your benefit year. You also need to register with CalJOBS, which is California's job search database - this is a requirement for most UI claimants. You have to be actively looking for work and keeping a record of your job search activities each week.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
AuthorWait I have to register with CalJOBS too? How many different accounts do I need to make lol
0 coins
Javier Garcia
Ha I know it feels like a lot. The CalJOBS registration takes about 20 minutes and you only have to do it once. After that you just need to log your job contacts each week - you're required to contact a certain number of employers per week to stay eligible.
0 coins
Yara Abboud
The current job search requirement is 3 employer contacts per week unless you're on standby status or in an approved training program.

One thing that stressed me out when I filed was not knowing whether I should stop looking for work while waiting for EDD to process my claim. DON'T stop. You need to be actively job searching from your first week of unemployment or you can be found ineligible for those weeks even if your claim eventually gets approved. I made the mistake of thinking I should wait until I was officially approved before starting my job search log and it cost me two weeks of benefits.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
AuthorThat's a really important point that I definitely would have gotten wrong. So I should start my job search log immediately even before my claim is approved?
0 coins
Natasha Ivanova
Yes, from literally the week after your last day of work. Keep a spreadsheet with the employer name, contact method, date, and position you applied for. You may never be asked to show it but if EDD audits you and you can't produce it, you could face disqualification or even an overpayment notice later.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
100% agree on keeping detailed records. I used a Google Sheet and it saved me when I got a random verification request from EDD about my job search activities.

does anyone know if you can file for unemployment if you were a 1099 contractor? asking for a friend lol
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
Traditional independent contractors classified as 1099 workers aren't eligible for regular California UI benefits because unemployment insurance is funded by employer payroll taxes, which 1099 workers don't pay into. However if you were misclassified as a contractor when you should have been an employee, you might have a case - California has very strict worker classification laws under AB5.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
yeah that's kind of my situation actually, the company called me a contractor but I worked set hours and had a supervisor. maybe worth looking into
0 coins
Javier Garcia
If you think you were misclassified, you can actually file a claim and California EDD will investigate the classification. It's more complicated and takes longer but people do win those cases.

I'm also new to this and confused about the waiting week. Someone told me there's a waiting week where you don't get paid - is that still a thing?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
Yes, California EDD still has a waiting week for most new claims. The first week you're eligible is unpaid - it's called the waiting period week. You still have to certify for it, you just don't receive payment for that week. It basically means your first actual payment covers your second week of unemployment.

PixelPioneer
ugh that's annoying but good to know before I'm expecting money that isn't coming

Amina Sy
I didn't know this and was so confused when my first payment was only for one week instead of two
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
I want to add something about the certification process because it confused me at first. After you file, you'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks using UI Online or by calling the automated phone line (EDD Tele-Cert). During certification California EDD asks things like: did you work any hours last week, did you earn any money, were you able and available to work, did you refuse any work, were you looking for work. Answer honestly because misreporting can lead to overpayment notices down the road which are a real headache.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
AuthorIs there a specific day I have to certify? Or can I do it any day during the two week period?
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
California EDD assigns you a specific certification day based on the last digit of your Social Security number. They'll tell you what day after you file. You can certify on that day or the day after but don't wait too long or your payment gets delayed.
0 coins
Yara Abboud
You can also certify up to 2 weeks late without losing those weeks, but past that you generally need to call EDD to backfile and that's where people run into problems.

Another situation where Claimyr came in clutch - my friend had a really specific question about whether her part-time gig would affect her benefit amount and she could NOT get through to EDD on the phone for days. She used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent who explained exactly how partial benefits work when you have some earnings. Way better than trying to guess from the website FAQs.
0 coins
PixelPioneer
How does partial benefits work anyway? I might pick up some freelance stuff while job hunting
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
When you work and earn wages during a benefit week, California EDD reduces your payment based on those earnings. You get to keep the first $25 or 25% of your weekly benefit amount (whichever is higher) without any reduction. Earnings above that are deducted dollar for dollar from your benefit. So it can still be worth working part time as long as your earnings don't exceed your weekly benefit amount.

PixelPioneer
ok that's actually not as bad as I thought, might pick up a few shifts

For people worried about what happens if their claim gets denied or goes into adjudication - don't panic but don't ignore it either. If California EDD sends you a Notice of Determination that says you're disqualified, you have 30 days from the mailing date to file an appeal. You do this through UI Online or by mailing in the appeal form on the notice. During the appeal period you should keep certifying for benefits weekly even if you're not getting paid, because if your appeal is successful you could get back pay for all those weeks.
0 coins
Amina Sy
This is so important. I didn't know to keep certifying during my adjudication period and lost like 3 weeks of potential back pay.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
AuthorHow common is it to get sent to adjudication even when you were clearly laid off?
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
More common than you'd think. Sometimes it's triggered by employer disputes, address mismatches, identity verification issues, or even just random audits. Being laid off due to lack of work is usually the cleanest path but it's not a guarantee you won't hit a snag.

ok I've been reading this whole thread and just want to say thank you to everyone here. Filed my claim this morning after going through this thread first and felt so much more prepared. Had literally everything ready before I started. Still terrifying but at least I wasn't searching for my old employer's address mid-application lol

One last thing worth knowing - if you had health insurance through your employer, look into COBRA coverage immediately. You have 60 days from losing coverage to elect COBRA. It's usually expensive but keeps you on the same plan. Alternatively check Covered California at coveredca.gov because losing job-based insurance qualifies you for a special enrollment period and you might find cheaper options there. This isn't technically part of what's needed for unemployment but it's something everyone newly unemployed should know.

Miguel Diaz
AuthorI was actually going to ask about health insurance next, thank you for including this.

Covered California is actually really good if your income dropped significantly - you might qualify for pretty hefty subsidies now that you're on unemployment

Paolo Rizzo
I paid way less on Covered California than I would have on COBRA, definitely worth comparing

Final practical tip: screenshot or download everything from UI Online. Every notice, every payment history page, every certification confirmation. California EDD's records can have errors and if you ever have a dispute about whether you certified or what you reported, having your own records is invaluable. I keep a folder on my computer with dated screenshots of every single UI interaction. Sounds paranoid but I've heard too many horror stories about people getting overpayment notices for things they know they reported correctly.

This is genuinely great advice. I've seen people post in forums like this saying EDD claims they never certified when they definitely did. Having proof changes everything.

has anyone dealt with EDD taking forever to mail the debit card? I submitted my claim almost 2 weeks ago and got approved but no card yet
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
The Bank of America EDD debit card typically takes 7-10 business days from when your first payment is processed to arrive in the mail. If it's been more than 2 weeks since payment was actually issued (not just approved), you can call BofA EDD card services directly at their dedicated number or log into the prepaid card website to check the status. The card comes in a plain envelope so make sure you're not throwing it away by accident.

Amina Sy
oh no I've been throwing out a lot of mail lately I hope I didn't toss it

Yara Abboud
If you set up direct deposit instead of the debit card you avoid this whole issue. You can update your payment preference in UI Online even after your claim is approved.

One more thing nobody's mentioned - if you're going to school or in any kind of training program while collecting UI, you need to report it to California EDD. Some training programs are approved and won't affect your benefits, but others might raise questions about whether you're truly able and available for full-time work, which is a requirement. If EDD finds out about unreported school attendance it can trigger a review. When in doubt, just report it and let them sort out whether it affects your eligibility.
0 coins
Javier Garcia
There's actually a specific program called the California Training Benefits program that lets you collect UI while in approved training without having to do the weekly job search requirements. Worth looking into if you're considering going back to school or getting certified in something.

AuthorThat's really useful to know. I've been thinking about getting some certifications while I look for work.

I called EDD last week with a question about my claim status and somehow got through after only 45 minutes on hold which felt like a miracle. Usually it's like 2-3 hours minimum or you just get a busy signal and have to try again. I've started calling right at 8am when they open and that seems to help. Has anyone else found tricks for getting through?
0 coins
NebulaNomad
Calling at 8am helps but it's still a gamble. Honestly after my experience with Claimyr I probably wouldn't go back to the regular hold line for anything important. Got connected in way less time and didn't have to sit there waiting. claimyr.com if anyone wants to check it out.
