What does ineligible week mean on my California EDD unemployment claim?

So I just checked my UI Online account and next to one of my weeks it says 'ineligible week' in red. I have no idea what this means and honestly I'm kind of freaking out. I've been certifying every two weeks like I'm supposed to and reporting my hours correctly. I didn't work that week at all so it's not like I earned too much money or anything. Does this mean I'm not getting paid for that week? Will it affect my future payments too? I'm a former retail manager who got laid off about 6 weeks ago and this is my first time ever filing for unemployment so I have no clue what's normal and what's a red flag. The EDD website just shows the status without any explanation and I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do next. Anyone dealt with an ineligible week designation before?

An ineligible week on your California EDD claim basically means the system determined you didn't meet one or more eligibility requirements for that specific certification week. There are actually several different reasons this can happen and they don't all mean the same thing. The most common ones I've seen people ask about are: you reported earnings that exceeded your weekly benefit amount, you indicated you weren't able and available to work, you said you didn't look for work and aren't on an approved standby status, or there's an issue EDD flagged that needs adjudication review. The fact that your other weeks are processing normally is actually a decent sign - it suggests the issue may be isolated to that one week rather than a broader disqualification. Do you remember anything specific you answered differently on that certification?

0 coins

I'm going through my answers in my head and I honestly can't think of anything different. I said I was available to work, I listed my 3 job search activities, I said no to all the earnings questions. Everything was the same as my other weeks that went through fine.

0 coins

same thing happned to me and it turned out i accidentally hit the wrong answer on the able and available question, those questions are worded so weirdly on the app

0 coins

That's actually really common - the mobile app especially can be glitchy and sometimes registers the wrong answer. If you think your answers were correct, you may need to contact EDD to have them review the specific certification. Unfortunately that's where things get complicated with getting someone on the phone.

There's an important distinction worth making here. An 'ineligible week' isn't automatically the same as a full disqualification from your claim. Sometimes EDD marks a week ineligible pending additional information, and once that information is provided or verified, the week can be paid retroactively. Other times it's a permanent determination for that specific week. The key is figuring out WHICH type of ineligibility you're dealing with. Log into UI Online and check if there are any pending issues, notices, or tasks in your inbox - EDD usually sends a Notice of Determination or some kind of correspondence explaining the specific reason. Without knowing the reason code they're using, it's hard to advise exactly what steps to take.

0 coins

I checked my inbox and there's nothing there. No notices, no tasks, no pending issues showing. Just the ineligible week status with no explanation. It's so frustrating.

0 coins

EDD notices can sometimes take a few days to show up in your online inbox even after the status changes. Check back daily and also watch for physical mail - they still send some notices by mail which is honestly ridiculous in 2025

0 coins

Yes exactly what the reply above said. The mail piece often has more detail than what shows online. The notice should have a reason code and explanation plus instructions for what to do if you disagree with the determination.

0 coins

THIS IS SO TRUE the physical mail thing drove me absolutely insane. I was checking UI Online every hour and the actual explanation came in the mail like 5 days later. the whole system is so backwards

When I got an ineligible week last year I spent almost two weeks trying to get someone at EDD on the phone to find out what was going on. Kept getting the 'we are experiencing high call volume' message and getting cut off. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically gets you through to an actual EDD agent without you having to sit on hold all day. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I was pretty skeptical but I was desperate at that point. Got connected to an agent who actually pulled up my claim and told me exactly why the week was flagged. Turned out to be a system error on EDD's end and they fixed it on the spot. Whole call took maybe 15 minutes once I was connected. Just throwing it out there because I know how impossible it feels trying to reach someone there.

0 coins

I've been trying to call for 3 days straight and keep getting disconnected. Going to look into this, thanks for sharing.

0 coins

does that actually work? i've heard of services like that but always assumed they were scams

0 coins

It's legit, I was skeptical too. The video demo on their site explains the whole thing. It's not doing anything shady, just essentially queues you up so you're not burning through your whole morning hitting redial.

0 coins

I've seen this mentioned a few times on this forum and the people recommending it always seem to have had good results. worth trying if you're at your wits end with the phone situation

0 coins

ok so genuine question because I've seen conflicting info - does an ineligible week affect your maximum benefit amount? like does it eat into your total weeks of benefits even though you didn't get paid for it

0 coins

Good question and the answer depends on why the week was marked ineligible. If it's a true disqualification under UI code, yes - that week typically still counts against your benefit year even if you weren't paid. But if it's a pending issue that gets resolved and the week ends up getting paid, then obviously it counts as a paid week. This is actually one of the more frustrating aspects of the system - you can lose a week permanently even if the original reason was a misunderstanding or error that gets partially resolved too late.

0 coins

ugh that is so unfair. so you basically need to fight it quickly before it becomes permanent

0 coins

Exactly right. There are time limits on appeals and requests for reconsideration. If you get a formal Notice of Determination, you typically have 30 days from the mail date to appeal. Don't sit on it.

0 coins

I HAD THIS EXACT SITUATION and let me tell you it sent me into a full spiral. Mine said ineligible week and when I finally got through to someone (took me 8 days of calling) they told me it was because I apparently answered 'no' to the job search question even though I DEFINITELY said yes. The agent said they could see my answer was logged as no in the system. I have no idea how that happened because I remember clicking yes. They couldn't just override it on the spot, I had to submit additional documentation showing I had actually done job search activities that week. Saved my job search log from that week on my phone so I was able to send it. Week eventually got paid like 3 weeks later. KEEP YOUR JOB SEARCH RECORDS PEOPLE this situation taught me that lesson hard

0 coins

Oh wow this is actually super helpful and terrifying at the same time. I do keep records but now I'm going to make sure they're really detailed. Did you submit the records through Ask EDD or a different way?

0 coins

They told me to upload through the UI Online document upload feature. Make sure you include dates, company names, position titles, and how you applied (online, email, in person, etc). The more detail the better apparently.

0 coins

yep job search logs saved me too. just a basic spreadsheet but it made all the difference when EDD questioned one of my weeks

0 coins

Something nobody has mentioned yet - if the ineligible week is because EDD thinks you received wages that week, it's worth double-checking whether your former employer may have reported your final paycheck earnings differently than you expected. Sometimes severance, PTO payout, or final paychecks get reported to EDD by employers in ways that make it look like you earned wages during a week that you consider your first week of unemployment. This is actually a really common source of ineligible weeks that surprises people.

0 coins

Oh I didn't even think about this. I did get a final paycheck that included some unused PTO. Could that really cause an issue?

0 coins

Yes absolutely. California EDD treats PTO payouts differently than regular wages but the timing of how employers report it can create apparent overlaps. This is something worth specifically asking about if you get an agent on the phone - ask them to explain exactly what earnings or wages EDD shows as reported for that week.

0 coins

This is a really solid point and underdiagnosed reason for ineligible weeks. Vacation pay and PTO in particular have specific rules around how they affect UI eligibility. Some of it can be allocated to specific weeks by EDD which can trigger an ineligible determination.

0 coins

can you appeal an ineligible week or do you just have to accept it

0 coins

Yes you can appeal. Once you receive a formal Notice of Determination explaining the reason, you have the right to appeal to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB). The notice itself will have instructions. The appeal process is separate from just calling EDD to ask questions - it's a formal administrative hearing process. For something like a single ineligible week, many people try calling EDD first to resolve it informally before going the formal appeal route, but you should file the appeal within the 30-day window anyway to protect your rights while you pursue informal resolution.

0 coins

ok good to know. and they can't deny your appeal just because you already appealed right like there's no limit?

0 coins

The appeals process has multiple levels - first level is the CUIAB hearing, and if that doesn't go your way there are further appeal options. But let's not get ahead of ourselves - for a single ineligible week, often a phone call to EDD resolves it without needing to go full appeals board.

0 coins

Jumping in because I work in HR and see the employer side of this sometimes. When employees file for UI after being laid off, employers have to respond to EDD's request for wage and separation information. If there's ANY discrepancy between what the claimant reported and what the employer reported, EDD flags it for review which can result in an ineligible week showing up. It doesn't always mean anyone did anything wrong - sometimes it's just data entry differences or timing issues on the employer's reporting. But it is something worth looking into if you can find out what your former employer told EDD.

0 coins

I was laid off as part of a larger reduction in force - would the employer have any reason to dispute my claim? I'm worried they might have said something that triggered this.

0 coins

Mass layoffs are generally straightforward from an employer standpoint - they typically don't dispute claims for people laid off in a RIF because it would be inconsistent and create legal exposure. More likely if there's an issue it's a technical/reporting matter rather than a deliberate dispute.

0 coins

this is really good insider info, thank you

0 coins

Not trying to be that person but I just want to say for anyone reading this thread who might be early in their claim - document EVERYTHING from day one. Screenshot your certifications right after you submit them. Keep copies of all your job search activities with dates and details. Save any communication you get from EDD. I learned this the hard way and now I treat my unemployment documentation like I'm preparing for an audit every single week. It sounds extreme but when issues come up (and they do come up) having those records is the difference between a quick resolution and a months-long nightmare.

0 coins

Taking this advice seriously. Starting screenshots immediately.

0 coins

fr the screenshot thing is so important. i've had EDD say my answers were different than I remember and without proof there's nothing you can do

0 coins

Exactly. And if you're using the mobile app, the interface can be inconsistent. I actually switched to certifying on desktop for a more stable experience and screenshot each page of the certification before I hit submit.

0 coins

has anyone tried the EDD chat feature on their website? wondering if thats faster than calling for something like an ineligible week question

0 coins

The Ask EDD message system (which is their online contact option) is better for general questions but for actually getting an ineligible week corrected or getting specific account information you almost always need a phone call with a live agent. The written responses you get through Ask EDD are often generic and don't address your specific claim details. They may give you a form answer about what ineligible weeks mean in general without looking at your actual case.

0 coins

ugh ok so calling is really the only real option

0 coins

Pretty much yeah, which is why getting through on the phone is such a big deal. When I was dealing with my ineligible week situation I had already sent two Ask EDD messages that gave me useless canned responses. That's actually what pushed me to try Claimyr finally - the written route was going nowhere and I needed an actual person to look at my specific claim. claimyr.com was honestly a game changer for that situation.

0 coins

my ineligible week ended up being because i didn't list enough job search activities. california requires 3 per week and i only listed 2 that week because i genuinely forgot one that i had done. they count exactly what you put in the system not what you actually did so if you forget to log something it looks like you didnt do it

0 coins

Wait so you can get an ineligible week just for listing 2 job searches instead of 3? Even if you actually did 3?

0 coins

yes thats exactly what happened to me. i had to appeal and show evidence of the third job contact i made. took forever but i won the appeal and got that week paid

0 coins

This is an important point - the job search requirement in California is currently a minimum of 3 job search activities per week for most claimants. If your certification shows fewer than that and you're not on an approved standby exception, EDD can deem that week ineligible. Always double-count before submitting.

0 coins

and make sure the activities qualify - not everything counts. Registering on a job site only counts once, you need actual job applications or contacts each week

0 coins

UPDATE FOR OP: I went through something nearly identical and just want to say that most ineligible week issues DO get resolved eventually. It feels catastrophic when you see it but the majority of people who pursue it either through a phone call to EDD or through the appeals process get the week paid eventually. The system is infuriating but not hopeless. Hang in there.

0 coins

This is genuinely comforting, thank you. Still trying to get through on the phone.

0 coins

Keep at it. Call right when they open if you can, I had better luck at 8am than any other time

0 coins

slightly off topic but does an ineligible week reset your claim or anything like that? like do you have to refile?

0 coins

No, a single ineligible week doesn't reset or cancel your claim. Your benefit year continues as normal and you should keep certifying for subsequent weeks. Stopping your certifications because of an ineligible week would actually make things worse - you'd potentially lose payment for future weeks while the ineligible week issue is still being sorted out.

0 coins

ok good i was worried about that. so just keep certifying as normal and deal with the ineligible week separately

0 coins

Exactly. Two parallel tracks - keep certifying every two weeks as normal, AND separately pursue resolution of the ineligible week through EDD contact or formal appeal if needed.

0 coins

Real question - does EDD notify your employer if you have an ineligible week or appeal something? My situation at my old job is kind of complicated and I'm paranoid about them finding out I'm pursuing this

0 coins

EDD doesn't proactively notify employers about specific weekly determinations or appeals in the way you're probably worried about. Employers are already notified that you filed a claim initially (that's standard) and they may receive notice if you appeal a disqualification, but EDD isn't sending them updates like 'this person had an ineligible week this week.' The appeals process does notify the employer because they're technically a party to the case, but for a simple ineligible week being resolved via phone call that wouldn't typically generate employer correspondence.

0 coins

ok that's a relief. was worried about that

0 coins

i'm on standby status through my union and i got an ineligible week - does the standby exemption not protect against all ineligible week situations? i thought being on standby meant i didn't have to do job searches

0 coins

Standby status exempts you from the job search requirement specifically, but there are other eligibility conditions that still apply even on standby. You still need to certify that you're able and available to work, you still need to be ready to return to your employer when called back, and you still need to accurately report any earnings. So the ineligible week on your claim is likely from something other than the job search question. Check whether your standby status was still active and approved for that specific week - sometimes standby approvals have end dates and people don't realize they've expired.

0 coins

oh shoot i didn't think about the standby expiration. how do i check if mine is still active?

0 coins

Log into UI Online and check your claim details section - it should show your standby approval status and dates. If it expired, you'd need to have your employer submit a new standby request to EDD. This happens a lot actually especially with union members on longer layoffs.

0 coins

Thread is super helpful. Just want to add one thing nobody mentioned - if you have a disability or medical condition that affected your availability during the week in question, that can actually be a valid reason for an ineligible week but there may be SDI (State Disability Insurance) options through EDD that could cover that period instead of regular UI. Just something to be aware of if that's anyone's situation.

0 coins

That's not my situation but good to know for others.

0 coins

wait you can switch between UI and SDI? i didn't know that was a thing

0 coins

They're different programs but if you become unable to work due to illness or injury while receiving UI, you may be eligible to transition to SDI for the period you were medically unavailable. It's complex and requires documentation but it means that period isn't just a total loss of benefits. EDD has information about this on their website or you can ask an agent about it.

0 coins

Coming back to add - OP if you're still having trouble reaching EDD by phone, seriously don't give up on that avenue. An actual agent can see everything in your file and often resolve ineligible weeks in a single call that would otherwise drag on for weeks through written correspondence. When I used Claimyr to finally get through, the agent I spoke with was genuinely helpful and had information I couldn't have gotten any other way. The website is claimyr.com and the demo video is at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I know it sounds like a random suggestion but I've now recommended it to three people in my family dealing with EDD issues and it worked for all of them.

0 coins

I actually tried this yesterday and got through to an EDD agent for the first time after days of failed calls. The agent confirmed it was a job search logging issue and is processing the correction. Hopefully the payment comes through soon. Thank you so much for the recommendation!!

0 coins

That's great news!! The logging issues seem so fixable once you can actually talk to someone. Fingers crossed the payment posts quickly for you.

0 coins

So glad you got through! These success stories are genuinely what this forum is for

For anyone finding this thread in the future via search - here's a quick summary of the most common reasons for ineligible weeks in California UI: (1) Job search activities not meeting the 3-per-week requirement, (2) Answering no to able and available to work question, (3) Earnings exceeding weekly benefit amount or partial benefit threshold, (4) Employer-reported wages conflicting with claimant certification, (5) PTO or severance pay being allocated to the claim week, (6) Standby exemption expired or not approved, (7) System error or data entry issue on EDD's end. Most of these CAN be resolved - the key is getting specific information about which reason applies to your case and then taking the appropriate corrective action quickly.
