How to certify unemployment benefits with California EDD - step by step

Okay so I've been putting this off because honestly the whole process confused me when I first lost my job. I was a project coordinator in the tech sector, laid off about six weeks ago when my company did a round of cuts. I finally sat down and figured out the certification process but man, the California EDD website is NOT intuitive at all. For anyone else trying to figure out how to certify unemployment benefits for the first time, here's basically what happened to me: I filed my initial claim, waited for my claim to be processed, and then got totally lost when it came time to actually certify for my biweekly payment. Nobody told me you have to wait for EDD to set up your certification schedule before you can certify, and I panicked thinking I missed some deadline. The UI Online portal shows your certification dates but I had no idea what any of it meant. Did anyone else struggle with this? Like is there a straightforward guide somewhere that explains the biweekly certification schedule and what happens if you miss a week?

Welcome to the club lol. The California EDD certification process trips up pretty much everyone the first time around. Here's the basic breakdown: After your initial claim is processed, EDD assigns you a certification period - typically every two weeks. You log into UI Online at https://myedd.edd.ca.gov/ and look for the 'Certify for Benefits' button. It only appears when you're actually within your certification window. The questions ask about: whether you were able and available to work each week, whether you worked any hours, how much you earned if you did work, whether you looked for work (you need 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby status), and whether you refused any work. Answer everything honestly. The system cross-checks your reported wages with employer records. If you worked any hours at all, report them - partial earnings don't disqualify you, they just reduce your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Thank you this is actually really helpful. The 3 job search activities per week thing - does that mean applying for 3 jobs or can other activities count too?

0 coins

Good question - it's 3 job search activities per week, not just applications. Activities include submitting applications, attending career fairs, interviewing, using CalJOBS, creating job search profiles, and more. The EDD website has the full list. Keep a log with dates, employer names, and what you did because you may need to provide this if audited.

0 coins

wait they can actually audit your job search records?? nobody told me this when I filed

0 coins

One thing people don't realize is there's actually a difference between certifying ON TIME vs late. If you miss your certification window by even a day or two, your payment gets delayed significantly. I missed mine once by like 3 days because I thought the window was longer and it took almost 2 extra weeks to get paid. Always certify on the first available day if you can.

0 coins

Okay this is stressing me out now. How do I know exactly when my window opens?

0 coins

Go to UI Online and check the 'Claim Summary' page - it shows your next certification date. You can also sign up for email reminders in your account settings. I set a phone alarm for every other Sunday now lol

0 coins

this right here saved me so much headache when someone told me about the email reminders. definitely set those up immediately

0 coins

Honestly the phone situation with EDD is what kills me. I've been trying to certify unemployment benefits but there's an issue with my account showing a discrepancy from a part-time job I reported and I literally cannot get through to anyone on the phone. Called 30+ times in one day and just get the 'high call volume' recording. Someone on another forum mentioned a service called Claimyr that basically gets you in the queue to reach an actual EDD agent without you having to redial constantly. Supposedly you go to claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I'm seriously considering it because I need this resolved before my next certification date.

0 coins

I used Claimyr last month when my adjudication was holding up my payments. Honestly it worked - I got a callback from an EDD agent within a few hours when I'd been trying to call for over a week on my own. For something like a wage discrepancy that's blocking your certification, talking to an actual agent is pretty much the only way to get it fixed.

0 coins

That's really good to hear. Did you have to give them a bunch of personal info or anything?

0 coins

Nope, it's pretty simple. You just use claimyr.com and they handle getting you into the phone queue. The whole point is just connecting you with EDD so you handle the actual conversation yourself.

0 coins

okay I'm going to try this too. I've literally been sitting on hold for 4 hours today

0 coins

Something nobody mentions when explaining how to certify unemployment benefits - the UI Online app on mobile is genuinely terrible for certifying. I tried it twice and both times my certification got stuck on the final submission screen. Now I only certify using a desktop browser. Saved myself so much aggravation.

0 coins

Oh wow good to know. I was just going to do it from my phone

0 coins

Chrome on desktop works best in my experience. Also clear your cache before certifying just in case. EDD's tech infrastructure is... not great.

0 coins

I've had zero issues on Firefox desktop fwiw. But yeah mobile is a mess avoid it

0 coins

safari on mac works fine too

0 coins

I want to add something important about the job search requirement because I see a lot of confusion about this. When you certify for unemployment benefits through California EDD, you're certifying UNDER PENALTY OF PERJURY. That means if you say you completed 3 job search activities per week and you didn't, that's fraud. EDD does audit claims and people have received overpayment notices for exactly this. I'm not trying to scare anyone, just... take the job search part seriously and keep a real log. The CalJOBS system at www.caljobs.ca.gov actually timestamps your activity there, which is great documentation if you ever get questioned.

0 coins

This is making me realize I should probably set up a CalJOBS account asap. Does creating the account itself count as a job search activity?

0 coins

Yes! Creating or updating your CalJOBS profile counts as one activity. Same with updating your resume on the site. It's a legitimate way to get started especially in your first week.

0 coins

certified under penalty of perjury omg that language always scares me even though I always answer honestly lol

0 coins

The penalty of perjury language is standard government stuff - don't panic. It's there to deter fraud. If you're reporting everything honestly you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

0 coins

can someone clarify something for me - do you have to certify even during weeks you have zero income and zero job search activities? like what if I was sick one week

0 coins

You still have to certify, but if you were sick during a week and couldn't work AND couldn't look for work, you answer that you weren't able and available to work that week. That week typically won't get paid but it doesn't necessarily disqualify your whole claim. Being sick is a legitimate reason. Just answer the certification questions accurately.

0 coins

okay good because I panicked thinking I'd lose everything over one sick week. thank you

0 coins

I think you can also sometimes claim disability for that week separately? not totally sure about this

0 coins

Genuine question - I've been unemployed for 14 weeks now and I noticed my benefit year ends in a few months. Do you just automatically keep certifying or do you have to refile? I'm so scared of accidentally stopping my payments

0 coins

Your benefit year is 52 weeks from when you filed. As long as you have a remaining balance in your claim, you keep certifying the same way. If you exhaust your benefits before the year ends, or if your year ends and you're still unemployed, you'd need to look into whether you qualify for any extension programs. But the process of certifying itself doesn't change - just keep logging into UI Online and certifying each period.

0 coins

Okay phew. I still have plenty of balance left just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to accidentally break something

0 coins

The system will actually alert you if anything changes with your claim status. Keep an eye on your UI Online inbox for any notices from EDD.

0 coins

I work part time gig stuff while collecting unemployment and the earnings reporting part of certifying is where I always get nervous. Like I never know exactly how to handle tips or mileage reimbursements. Anyone dealt with this?

0 coins

For EDD purposes you report gross wages (before taxes) for the week you EARNED them, not when you got paid. Tips count as earnings and should be reported. Mileage reimbursements that are actual expense reimbursements (not wages) typically don't count as earnings - but if you're getting a flat per-mile payment that's above IRS standard mileage rates it can get complicated. When in doubt, report it. Underreporting earnings is how people end up with overpayment notices.

0 coins

ugh okay so I need to be reporting the tips separately. I've just been lumping everything together as my weekly total. Is that okay?

0 coins

As long as the total amount you're reporting is accurate (tips included in that total) you should be fine. The system just asks for your total gross earnings for the week.

0 coins

gig work + unemployment reporting is SO confusing I feel this deeply

0 coins

OKAY so I have been certifying for unemployment benefits for 5 months and yesterday I logged in and my certification button is just... gone. No explanation. No message in my inbox. My claim balance still shows. What does this mean?? Is my claim in adjudication? Did I do something wrong?? I am absolutely freaking out

0 coins

Don't panic yet. A few things can cause this: 1) Your claim might have been randomly flagged for review, 2) EDD might have received a tip or employer info that triggered adjudication, 3) It could be a technical glitch. Check your UI Online inbox carefully - sometimes notices go there without an email notification. Also check your Correspondence section specifically.

0 coins

I checked everything there's literally nothing. No notice no message no explanation just no button

0 coins

At this point you really need to talk to an EDD agent. A missing certification button with no explanation usually means something on the backend flagged your claim. This is exactly when I'd use Claimyr - you need an actual agent to look at your account. Check out claimyr.com, they have a video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Getting through to EDD on your own when something like this happens can take days of calling.

0 coins

I'm going to try this right now because I literally cannot wait days. I have rent due

0 coins

small thing but when you certify make sure the week ending dates on the questions match what you think they are. I once answered questions for the wrong week because I wasn't paying attention to the dates and it caused a whole mess with my payments

0 coins

wait how did that even happen? does it not tell you clearly which week you're certifying for?

0 coins

it does show the dates but I was just clicking through fast and not reading carefully. lesson learned

0 coins

The dates are shown but honestly EDD's UI makes it easy to miss. Always double-check the week ending date before you start answering.

0 coins

anyone know if you can certify early? like my window opens Sunday but I'm going to be traveling and won't have good internet access

0 coins

No, you can't certify before your window opens - the button literally won't appear. But as long as you have any internet access at all on Sunday or Monday, the mobile site should work well enough in a pinch even though it's not ideal. Alternatively you can certify by phone using EDD's automated system at 1-866-333-4606. It asks the same questions through the phone keypad.

0 coins

Oh the phone option is a lifesaver, I had no idea you could certify that way. Thank you!

0 coins

The phone certification line is actually really reliable IMO. I've used it when my computer had issues. Just have your social security number and claim info ready.

0 coins

I went through adjudication for 6 weeks and during that whole time I was still supposed to be certifying weekly even though I wasn't getting paid. Nobody told me this initially and I missed 3 certification periods. Had to file late certifications for all of them and it delayed my payment even more when the adjudication finally resolved. So PSA: ALWAYS KEEP CERTIFYING even if your claim is in adjudication or pending review. You can still receive backdated pay for those weeks once the issue resolves but only if you certified.

0 coins

This is such an important point, thank you for sharing. I would have made this exact mistake.

0 coins

I went through the same thing. The adjudication process is incredibly stressful and EDD communicates basically nothing while it's happening. I spent 5 weeks calling every day trying to get status updates.

0 coins

Yep. In hindsight I wish I'd found a way to actually reach an agent during my adjudication. Most of my stress came from just not knowing what was happening.

0 coins

This is why I was trying so hard to reach EDD when my account had that issue. The silence from them while things are pending is genuinely awful.

0 coins

quick note for people on standby status - you don't have to complete the 3 job search activities per week BUT you still have to certify your benefits. Standby means your employer expects to call you back and EDD approved it, but you still have to log in and confirm your status each certification period. I see people on standby thinking they don't have to do anything and then getting surprised when they don't get paid

0 coins

Wait I thought standby meant you were basically just waiting and EDD handled everything automatically??

0 coins

Nope! You still certify. Standby just exempts you from the job search requirement. Everything else about the certification process is the same.

0 coins

This is accurate. Also standby status has to be approved - you can't just declare yourself on standby. Your employer has to be temporarily shutting down or reducing hours with a definite return date.

0 coins

I've noticed that when I certify I get paid on a Wednesday if I certify Sunday or Monday, but if I certify Tuesday it sometimes doesn't hit until Friday. Is this accurate for others or is it just my bank?

0 coins

The earlier you certify in your window the faster you get paid, generally speaking. EDD processes certifications in batches and Sunday/Monday submissions get into the first batch. Your Bank of America debit card (if you have the EDD card) or direct deposit usually reflects this by Wednesday/Thursday.

0 coins

That tracks with what I've seen. Good to know it's not just my bank being weird

0 coins

I certify first thing Sunday morning almost every time and my direct deposit hits Wednesday without fail at this point

0 coins

does anyone know what happens if you accidentally give the wrong answer when certifying? like I answered no to a question I should have said yes to and now I'm worried I committed fraud somehow

0 coins

Take a breath - a mistake is not the same as fraud. Fraud requires intentional deception. If you made an honest error, you can contact EDD to correct it. You can also sometimes fix it by responding to the specific notice they may send (EDD often catches discrepancies and asks for clarification before taking action). Call EDD and explain the error. They deal with accidental mistakes regularly.

0 coins

Okay that makes me feel a little better. I was spiraling hard. I'll try to call to correct it.

0 coins

If you're having trouble getting through by phone to correct this, Claimyr can help you connect with an EDD agent faster. claimyr.com - worth it for something that's stressing you out like this, the sooner you get it corrected the better.

0 coins

Adding that to my list of things to try. I really need to just talk to a human at EDD

0 coins

I'm in week 2 of unemployment and I feel like I know nothing lol. This thread is genuinely more helpful than the official EDD website for explaining how to certify unemployment benefits. The EDD FAQ is written in bureaucrat speak and the videos are outdated

0 coins

Same honestly. I've learned more from this forum than from 4 hours of reading the EDD website

0 coins

The EDD website has gotten slightly better recently but you're not wrong that it's hard to navigate. Their YouTube videos are helpful actually - search 'EDD UI Online tutorial' and there are some official walkthroughs. But forums like this fill in the gaps the official stuff doesn't cover.

0 coins

good tip will check those out

0 coins

Something that messed me up early on - I thought my EDD debit card and my UI Online account were somehow linked and I could check my payment through the card app. They're completely separate systems. The Bank of America EDD card has its own app/website (prepaid.bankofamerica.com/EddCard) and UI Online is separate. I was confused for weeks wondering why my certification wasn't showing up anywhere

0 coins

Oh wow I didn't know this either. So you have two totally separate logins to keep track of?

0 coins

Exactly. UI Online (myedd.edd.ca.gov) is where you certify and manage your claim. The BofA card site/app is just where you check your card balance and transactions. They do sync eventually - your payment from EDD shows up as a deposit on the card - but they're not the same thing.

0 coins

this tripped me up too for like the first month. should really be clearer in the welcome materials

0 coins

Final tip that took me too long to figure out: after you certify, don't close the browser until you see the CONFIRMATION page with a confirmation number. I had a certification that appeared to go through but I never saw a confirmation, and sure enough EDD had no record of it. Screenshot or write down that confirmation number every single time.

0 coins

Huge tip. I screenshot every confirmation now. The system doesn't email you a confirmation which is insane honestly, so the only proof you have is that screen.

0 coins

Exactly. And if you ever need to call EDD to dispute a missing payment, having that confirmation number makes the conversation so much easier than just saying 'I thought I certified

0 coins

Starting this practice immediately. This whole thread has been a crash course in surviving California EDD. Thank you everyone.

0 coins

That's what the forum is for. Good luck everyone with your claims - hope you're all back to work soon but at least you've got the certification process figured out while you're in it.
