How much is unemployment after military service in California EDD?
I just got out of the military after 6 years active duty and I'm trying to figure out how much I'd actually get from California EDD unemployment. I know veterans can file for UI benefits but I have no idea how the calculation works for someone coming off military pay versus a regular civilian job. My discharge was about 5 weeks ago, I'm in California now staying with family while I transition out, and I honestly didn't even know I was eligible until a buddy from my unit told me to look into it. I filed online through UI Online about 10 days ago but it's still sitting there with no determination. When I look at my claim on myEDD it just says pending. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount for veterans? Like do they use your military base pay or BAH or BAS in the calculation? And is there a different process for veterans filing with California EDD compared to civilian claims? I'm kind of going in blind here and any information would be really helpful before I try to call them.

Welcome home first of all. To answer your question about how much unemployment after military service you can expect from California EDD - it's calculated based on your earnings during what's called a base period. For veterans the EDD uses wages reported on your DD-214 and W-2 from military service. Your base pay counts, but things like BAH and BAS are typically not included since those are allowances not taxable wages. The weekly benefit amount (WBA) in California is roughly 60-70% of your highest quarter earnings up to the state maximum. For 2025 the max WBA is around $450 per week. You'll also want to make sure you filed the right way - veterans filing for UI after military service use a slightly different path through the EDD that involves your separation documents.

AuthorThat's really helpful thank you. So basically they only count base pay? My BAH was actually more than my base pay so that changes my expectations quite a bit. Do I need to submit my DD-214 separately or does EDD get that info automatically?

Good info here. I'd add that the base period EDD uses is typically the 12 months before your last quarter - so if you separated in early 2025 they'd look at most of 2024. Your military W-2 (LES summary) is what gets used for the wage calculation.

This is correct about BAH not counting. I went through this exact process and my weekly amount was lower than expected for the same reason. Make sure you submit your DD-214 through the document upload portal on myEDD or they will keep the claim in pending status forever.

ok so i got out 2 years ago and filed with california edd and tbh the whole process was confusing as hell for veterans. nobody at edd really explains any of this. my claim sat pending for like 3 weeks and i had no idea what was happening

Author3 weeks is what I'm worried about. Did you ever figure out what caused the delay?

they said something about needing to verify my military wages with the department of defense. it eventually went through but i never could get anyone on the phone to explain anything to me

I was in a similar spot transitioning out and found out you can actually get through to a real EDD agent using a service called Claimyr. When my veteran UI claim was just sitting in pending with no update I was going crazy trying to call the regular EDD number. Found Claimyr at claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - basically it gets you connected to a live EDD rep instead of just getting the busy signal or the automated hang up. I was able to ask specifically about my military wage verification and the agent walked me through exactly what documents I still needed to submit. Way less stressful than the usual EDD phone experience.

claimyr worked for me too when my claim was stuck. got through to an agent same day and found out I had a missing document holding things up. definitely worth trying if you can't get through on your own

never heard of this but gonna try it my claim has been in adjudication for 6 weeks and edd won't call me back

To give you a more specific answer about benefit amounts - California EDD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) using this formula: take your highest quarter earnings during the base period, divide by 26, then that's your approximate WBA. So if your highest quarter of base pay was say $11,000 your WBA would be around $423/week. The maximum weekly benefit in California is currently $450 and minimum is $40. Veterans separating from active duty are eligible for up to 26 weeks of regular UI benefits through EDD as long as you meet the earnings requirements during your base period. Your military base pay almost certainly qualifies you for the maximum or near-maximum weekly amount if you served 6 years.

AuthorThis formula actually makes sense, thank you. So if I pull up my W-2 from last year I can estimate what I'd get?
0 coins
Ava Williams
Exactly. Look at box 1 on your W-2 which is taxable wages - divide your highest three-month period's earnings by 26 and that'll get you in the ballpark. Keep in mind EDD will do their own official calculation but this gives you an estimate.

Keisha Brown
the divide by 26 formula is right but I think EDD sometimes uses a slightly different multiplier for some earners so treat it as an estimate not exact

Also worth noting - if your W-2 from the military shows $0 or very little because your separation was mid-year, EDD might use an alternate base period. Good idea to ask about this specifically when you get through to an agent.

wait does this even work for veterans?? i thought you had to have worked a regular civilian job to get unemployment. military is federal not state so idk how california edd would have anything to do with it

Dmitry Petrov
Yes it absolutely works for veterans. There's a specific program called UCX (Unemployment Compensation for Ex-service members) which is administered by state unemployment agencies including California EDD. You file through EDD just like anyone else but they verify your wages and separation with the Department of Defense. Federal law requires states to administer these claims.

Paolo Esposito
oh wow i didn't know that at all. my cousin got out last year and had no idea either. gonna tell him about this
0 coins
Ava Williams
The UCX program has been around since the 1950s specifically for this reason - military service members have no civilian employer to draw unemployment from so Congress set up the program so veterans can file through their home state's unemployment agency. California EDD handles it the same as any other claim once the military wage verification is done.

I literally went through this in 2024 and wanted to share what I learned. The pending status for veteran claims often takes longer than regular UI claims because EDD has to go through an additional step to verify service and earnings with the DoD. I waited almost 4 weeks. Here's what helped me move things along: upload your DD-214 copy 4 directly to myEDD under documents, upload your most recent military W-2 and LES (leave and earnings statement), and make sure your mailing address matches exactly what's on your separation paperwork. Any mismatch causes an extra review. Once I did all that it moved pretty fast.
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorI uploaded my DD-214 when I filed but didn't think to include my LES. Going to add that now. What section of myEDD do you upload documents to?
0 coins
Amina Toure
On myEDD go to Inbox then look for the Upload Documents option or check if there's an open task in your claim. Sometimes EDD sends a message requesting specific documents and you upload from there. If there's no open task just use the general document upload and note in the description what each file is.

LunarEclipse
also make sure the DD-214 is Copy 4 specifically - that's the member copy with all the service details. Some people upload Copy 2 or 3 which don't have all the info EDD needs

FOUR WEEKS NOW and my veteran claim is STILL pending with california edd. filed correctly, uploaded everything twice, called the number but never get through. meanwhile I'm watching my savings drain. the system is built to frustrate people into giving up and that's what they WANT. sorry OP don't mean to hijack your thread but this is infuriating and I see someone else in the same boat as me

Have you tried the Claimyr service to actually get through? claimyr.com - I know it sounds weird but it actually works for getting a real EDD agent on the line. My claim was stuck and getting through to an agent was the only thing that actually moved it. The video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains how it works

quick tip: when your claim is in that pending/verification stage with EDD for veteran claims, keep filing your weekly certifications even though you haven't been paid yet. A lot of people stop filing because they think nothing is happening but those weeks won't be paid retroactively if you skip them. File every week no matter what.

StormChaser
AuthorOh this is HUGE thank you. I didn't know that. I have been filing weekly but good to hear I should keep going.

Yara Khalil
wait so if i stopped filing during the 6 weeks my claim has been in adjudication i lose those weeks??
0 coins
LunarEclipse
unfortunately yes, EDD typically won't backpay weeks where no certification was submitted. You should contact them ASAP and ask if there's any way to file late certifications - in some cases they'll allow it but it's not guaranteed. Definitely don't stop now though
0 coins
Ava Williams
This is correct and one of the most common and costly mistakes people make during pending/adjudication periods. File every week even if you feel like nothing is happening. The payments will come through retroactively once approved but only for weeks you certified.

For the calculation question - I want to make sure you know about something called the alternate base period. Standard base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters. But if your military earnings don't meet the minimum threshold using the standard base period (because you just separated), you can request the alternate base period which uses the four most recent completed quarters. This might actually include more of your active duty pay and could qualify you for a higher weekly amount. Worth asking EDD about when you talk to them.
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorI had no idea there were two different base periods. This is exactly the kind of thing I wouldn't have known to ask about. How do I request the alternate base period?
0 coins
Miguel Castro
You can request it when you file or after - just tell EDD you'd like to be evaluated under the alternate base period as well. They should automatically check if it results in a higher WBA but it doesn't hurt to ask specifically.

Dmitry Petrov
Good point. The alternate base period option is important for anyone who separated from service in the first part of the year since their recent military earnings might not be fully captured in the standard calculation.

not to be negative but I hope OP has realistic expectations. California EDD moves incredibly slowly especially for anything non-standard. I got out in 2023 and my claim took almost 2 months to get approved. the benefit amount when I finally got it was correct and all the back pay came through but the wait was brutal. just prepare yourself mentally for this taking longer than you want it to
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorAppreciate the honesty. I'd rather be mentally prepared than blindsided. Did you do anything in particular that eventually got it resolved?

FireflyDreams
honestly just kept calling until I got through and then when I finally talked to someone they said there was a small discrepancy between my name on file and my DD-214. literally one letter off. once that was fixed it approved within days. so frustrating that something so minor holds up the whole claim
0 coins
Keisha Brown
This is why talking to an actual EDD agent matters so much - small flags that you'd never know about from staring at the portal can be the thing holding your whole claim up

my brother in law just went through this same thing and got $420 a week in california after getting out of the navy. served 4 years. so the numbers for 6 years of service should probably be similar or slightly higher depending on your base pay grade
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorGood to know, $420 is actually in line with what some people here said to expect. Thanks for sharing that.

Dmitry Petrov
The rank/pay grade matters a lot here. E-4 versus E-6 versus O-3 will result in pretty different WBA calculations. But yes for most enlisted members who served several years you're likely looking at the $380-450 range for California which is at or near the state maximum.

has anyone had issues with California EDD saying they cant find your military records? that happened to me and it delayed everything by like 6 more weeks. they said the DoD records system was delayed in responding. i eventually had to submit my SGLI elections forms and deployment orders as supplementary documentation before they'd approve it
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorUgh I hope that doesn't happen to me. Good to know that's a possibility though. Did EDD send you a notice asking for additional docs or did you just proactively submit them?
0 coins
Javier Morales
they sent a message through the myEDD inbox saying the DoD verification was taking longer than expected and asking if I had any additional documentation. I sent everything I had and it was enough to proceed. definitely watch your myEDD inbox closely

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. The DoD records query through the National Personnel Records Center can be slow. Proactively uploading everything you have is the right move rather than waiting for EDD to ask

Since nobody has mentioned this yet - also look into the TAP (Transition Assistance Program) resources if you haven't already. They sometimes have advisors who can help with the EDD filing process specifically for veterans. The base should have connected you to these resources before separation. Not a replacement for filing yourself but sometimes the advisors can clarify what documentation you need to submit to EDD.
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorI did go through TAP before separating but they only briefly touched on unemployment benefits. I'll reach back out to see if there's more specific guidance available.
0 coins
Keisha Brown
The quality of TAP guidance varies a lot by installation. Some bases have great resources and really walk veterans through the EDD process and some basically just mention it exists. Worth asking if there's a VSO (veteran service organization) near you - they often have people who know the EDD veteran claim process very well

VSOs are underrated for this kind of stuff, they helped me when I was dealing with a different VA issue and they know how to navigate the systems

i know this is late in the thread but I found Claimyr recently when my veteran claim was stuck and genuinely wish I had known about it earlier. got through to an EDD agent within an hour, she confirmed exactly what documents were missing from my file, and my claim was approved 4 days later. website is claimyr.com and there's a video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows the whole thing. after 5 weeks of getting busy signals and disconnections this was the only thing that actually worked for me

Update us when your claim gets approved OP! Also one more practical thing - once your claim IS approved you should set up direct deposit through myEDD if you haven't already. Faster than the EDD debit card and you'll get your back payments faster too.

StormChaser
AuthorWill do! And yes I already set up direct deposit when I filed, glad to know that was the right move.

Direct deposit is definitely the way to go. Usually hits your account within 24-48 hours of EDD processing versus 2-5 business days for the debit card to update

One final thing that sometimes catches veterans off guard with California EDD - the job search requirements. Once you're certifying each week you're required to document job search activities, typically 3 employer contacts per week. You report these on your weekly certification. Military transition is not an exemption from this requirement in most cases. Make sure you're keeping a log of your job applications and contacts because EDD can audit this. If you're enrolled in a qualifying retraining or education program there are exceptions but standard UI requires the job search activity.
0 coins
StormChaser
AuthorGood to know - I've been applying to a few places each week anyway but I didn't realize I needed to log it formally. I'll start tracking everything more carefully.
0 coins
Dmitry Petrov
Yes this is really important. Keep the employer name, contact method, date, and position you applied to. A simple spreadsheet works fine. If EDD ever audits your job search activity you want to have that documentation ready.

Zainab Ibrahim
this got me once - i was doing job search activities but not writing them down and when edd asked i scrambled to remember everything. keep records from day one

The job search log requirement catches a lot of people off guard. 3 contacts per week minimum in California, each week you certify. Some people think it's optional or informational only but it's an actual eligibility requirement.

Came back to this thread to say OP your situation sounds very similar to mine and it did eventually work out. The process for veterans is slower but California EDD does honor the UCX program and once the DoD verification clears you should get all your back weeks paid. Hang in there.
