Back to California Unemployment

How long can you get unemployment benefits in California EDD?

So I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and finally got my first payment last week after all the adjudication stuff cleared up. My coworker told me benefits only last like 3 months but my cousin said it could be way longer. I honestly have no idea what the actual limit is and the California EDD website is confusing as heck when I try to find a straight answer. Like how long can you actually collect unemployment in California? Does it depend on how long I worked or how much I made? Do I have to keep doing the job search requirements the whole time? Someone please explain this like I'm not an expert because I really need to plan my finances here.

So the standard answer is 26 weeks, which is about 6 months of regular UI benefits in California. That's the max for most people under the regular unemployment insurance program. But here's the thing - how much you actually get per week and how long your claim lasts can vary depending on your base period earnings. EDD calculates your benefit year as 52 weeks from when you filed, and you have that whole year to collect up to your maximum benefit amount. If you use up your weeks before the year ends, you're done. If you still have weeks left at the end of 52 weeks, those expire.

0 coins

Ok so 26 weeks is the hard cap? Like there's no way to get more than that normally?

0 coins

Under regular UI yeah, 26 weeks is the ceiling. Extensions can happen if California triggers extended benefits during high unemployment periods, but right now in 2025 we're not in one of those trigger situations statewide. So for most people filing today, plan on 26 weeks maximum.

0 coins

this is accurate, my claim maxed at 26 weeks last year. used every single one of them while job hunting

0 coins

Adding some detail here because the 26 week thing can be confusing. Your actual claim might be LESS than 26 weeks depending on your maximum benefit amount (MBA). EDD sets your MBA at the start of your claim - it's basically 26 times your weekly benefit amount. But if your weekly benefit amount is lower because your base period wages were lower, you might technically exhaust your MBA before hitting 26 weeks. The weeks and the dollar amount are both caps, whichever you hit first ends your claim.

0 coins

Wait so if my weekly amount is low I could run out of money before 26 weeks even if I still have weeks left?

0 coins

Exactly right. Say your MBA is $6,000 and you get $300 a week - that's only 20 weeks worth. But most people's MBAs work out to close to the 26 week limit. Check your award letter or UI Online account to see your specific MBA.

0 coins

i never understood this until i ran out of benefits early and called edd and they explained the MBA thing to me. wish someone had told me at the start

0 coins

Been through the California EDD system twice now and one thing nobody tells you upfront is that you need to keep filing your weekly certifications the entire time, no skipping weeks. AND you have to maintain your job search activities - currently that means 3 employer contacts per week. If you stop doing either one, your payments stop even if you still have weeks and money left on your claim. I've seen people lose weeks they were entitled to because they thought they could take a break from certifying. Don't be that person.

0 coins

3 contacts per week, got it. Do I need to log them somewhere or just keep track myself?

0 coins

You should be keeping a written or digital log with the employer name, date, contact method, and position applied for. EDD can audit you and ask to see your job search records at any time. If you're on standby status it's different - you might be exempt from the job search requirement - but for regular UI you absolutely need those 3 contacts weekly.

0 coins

The standby status exception trips people up all the time. If your employer told you you'll be recalled within 8 weeks you can apply for standby and skip the job search. But you have to actually get approved for standby, don't just assume you qualify.

0 coins

Honestly I'd call EDD directly to get your specific claim details because the online portal doesn't always show everything clearly. But yeah good luck with that lol. I spent 3 days straight trying to get through on the phone when I needed to ask about my remaining weeks. Finally someone in my Facebook group mentioned Claimyr - claimyr.com - it's a service that basically holds your spot in the EDD phone queue so you don't have to sit there redialing for hours. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Got through to an actual agent within a couple hours after days of failed attempts on my own. Totally worth it when you have specific questions about your claim.

0 coins

Ugh yeah I tried calling EDD yesterday and gave up after an hour of busy signals. I'll check out that Claimyr thing, thanks

0 coins

claimyr actually works? seems too good to be true ngl

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it genuinely got me through to an agent when nothing else was working. The video explains the whole thing better than I can.

0 coins

been meaning to try this for weeks. the edd phone lines are absolutely brutal

0 coins

Something important nobody mentioned yet: the 26 week clock starts from when your benefit year begins, not from when you actually start collecting. Your benefit year is 52 weeks. You can collect unemployment for up to 26 of those 52 weeks. If you had adjudication issues and didn't start getting paid until week 6 like you said, you technically lost some of your benefit year even though you presumably got back pay for those weeks. Make sure you check your UI Online account to confirm you got certified for and received payment for all the weeks you were eligible during adjudication.

0 coins

Oh this is stressing me out now. I did get backpay for the adjudication weeks but I'm not totally sure if all of them came through. How do I check?

0 coins

Log into UI Online and go to your payment history. Each week you certified for should show a status - paid, pending, or disqualified. If any weeks during your adjudication period show as pending or have no status, you may need to follow up with EDD.

0 coins

also check the 'claim summary' section which shows your remaining balance and weeks used. i check mine every time i certify just to stay on top of it

0 coins

can u get more than 26 weeks tho like what about extensions

0 coins

Federal extended benefits (EB) only kick in when a state's unemployment rate hits certain trigger thresholds. California isn't currently in a triggered extended benefits period in 2025. So right now, no - regular claimants are capped at 26 weeks with no extensions available unless the situation changes. Congress would have to pass new legislation for anything beyond that.

0 coins

ok so basically 26 weeks is it rn got it

0 coins

Correct for regular UI right now. The landscape can change if economic conditions shift significantly but as of today that's where things stand.

0 coins

I used up all my unemployment last year and lemme tell you, 26 weeks goes FAST when you're in a tough job market. My advice - treat that money carefully from day one. Don't assume you'll find something quickly. I burned through my benefits in like 5 months and then had nothing for that last month while still interviewing. Budget like you're going to need every single week.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely trying to be careful. It's scary how fast time passes when you're stressed about finding work.

0 coins

Exactly. And keep up with those weekly certifications religiously. I missed one week because I went on a camping trip and forgot, and I had to call EDD to get it sorted out. Cost me like a week of stress and a whole phone battle to fix it.

0 coins

ugh the missed certification thing is a nightmare. edd does NOT make it easy to certify for a missed week after the fact

0 coins

quick question related to this - does part time work affect how long you can collect? like if i find a part time gig while on unemployment does that use up my weeks faster

0 coins

Great question and the answer is nuanced. Working part time while on UI is totally allowed and encouraged actually. If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount, EDD will pay you the difference (with some adjustments). Weeks where you receive ANY payment from EDD - even a partial payment - count as a week used. So in theory yes, partial benefit weeks still count against your 26, but you're also earning money on top of it so it's usually worth it.

0 coins

oh interesting so its not like working kills my benefits, it just reduces the payment for that week

0 coins

Right. And report every dollar you earn honestly when you certify. EDD cross-checks with employer wage reports and getting caught underreporting earnings can lead to an overpayment notice and potential fraud flags. Not worth it.

0 coins

The earnings reporting thing is so important. I've seen people get hit with overpayment demands months later because they didn't report part time income properly. Always report everything.

0 coins

Just want to add something that might help OP plan: you can look up your exact maximum benefit amount right in your UI Online account under claim summary. It'll show total maximum benefit amount, amount paid to date, and remaining balance. That's the clearest picture of how much time/money you have left. No need to guess based on formulas when the info is right there.

0 coins

Just checked and it says I have $7,800 remaining. My weekly amount is $325. So... wait that's 24 weeks? Not 26?

0 coins

Yeah so your MBA worked out to slightly less than the full 26 weeks based on your base period wages. That's normal - it just means your benefit year earnings calculations landed there. 24 weeks is still a solid runway, use it wisely.

0 coins

This is also why it's important to understand your specific claim numbers rather than just assuming 26 weeks. Good that you checked OP.

0 coins

does anyone know if california has like an extended benefits program right now or is it really just 26 weeks??? I filed last month and im already worried

0 coins

As of 2025 California EDD only has the standard 26 week regular UI program available. The federal pandemic-era extensions ended years ago and there's no state-triggered extended benefits program active right now. 26 weeks is your max - plan accordingly.

0 coins

ok that's what I was afraid of. 26 weeks isn't very long when you're in a specialized field and interviews take forever

0 coins

Totally understand that stress. The silver lining is California's weekly benefit amounts are among the higher ones in the country - up to $450 a week. And keep networking hard because California's job market in certain sectors does move faster than it feels like when you're in the thick of it.

0 coins

the 26 week thing stressed me out so much when I started my claim I actually called EDD like three times asking different agents to confirm it lol. every single one said the same thing - 26 weeks max, 3 job search contacts per week, certify every two weeks, report earnings. Once I had that drilled into my head I stopped panicking so much and just worked the system.

0 coins

Honestly this is reassuring. How long did it take you to get through to an agent each time you called?

0 coins

First two times forever - like 2+ hours of redials. Third time I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) after someone here told me about it and got through way faster. Game changer for those times you really need to talk to a human at EDD.

0 coins

Yeah Claimyr is legitimately the only reliable way I've found to get through to EDD by phone anymore. Their regular lines are just impossible.

0 coins

ok real talk the EDD website says to use UI Online for everything but half the info I need isn't there and when I try to call I get disconnected after waiting forever. How are people actually getting answers from EDD when they have specific questions about their claim duration or anything else??

0 coins

Honestly? Claimyr is how I do it now. claimyr.com - check out the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 to see what it does. It basically gets you into the EDD phone queue without you having to sit there redialing. I've recommended it to like 5 people in my friend group who were all having the same problem and every one of them got through.

0 coins

ok I'm going to try this because I genuinely cannot get through any other way and I have questions about my specific weeks remaining that UI Online isn't answering clearly

0 coins

same situation here, gonna try it too

0 coins

The EDD phone situation has been rough for years honestly. Any tool that helps people actually reach an agent is valuable.

0 coins

One thing I'll add about how long you CAN collect vs how long you SHOULD collect - some people I know rushed to get off unemployment the second they got any job offer even a bad one. Nothing wrong with holding out a bit if the offer isn't right, that's literally what the benefit is for. But also don't get too comfortable and let those weeks tick by without really pushing hard on job applications. The sweet spot is using the full benefit period strategically.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely applying actively. I just wanted to understand the timeline so I know what I'm working with.

0 coins

Smart. Knowing your numbers - weekly benefit amount, MBA, weeks remaining - puts you in control of the situation instead of just hoping things work out.

0 coins

Wait does edd notify you when your benefits are about to run out or do you just wake up one day and your certification doesn't pay anything

0 coins

UI Online will show your remaining balance decreasing with each payment, so if you're checking it regularly you can see the end coming. EDD doesn't send a dramatic warning letter but your last payment will simply be your last one. The system won't let you certify past your benefit year or after your MBA is exhausted.

0 coins

ok so I should just be checking UI Online regularly to see where I stand. got it

0 coins

Yes check after every certification payment processes. Takes like 30 seconds and keeps you aware of exactly how much runway you have left.

0 coins

I genuinely didn't realize my benefits were almost gone until I got like a $40 final payment and was confused why it was so small. The portal shows it if you look but I wasn't paying attention. Stay on top of it.

0 coins

UPDATE: I logged into UI Online and checked my claim summary like people suggested. I have 22 weeks and about $6,900 remaining. I guess some of my adjudication weeks did get backpaid properly. This thread has been super helpful - I now understand the 26 week max, the MBA cap, the job search requirements, and how to track my remaining benefits. Feeling a lot less lost. Thank you all seriously.

0 coins

Great update! 22 weeks and nearly $7K is a solid cushion. Keep up with your weekly certifications, maintain your 3 job search contacts per week, and you're in good shape.

0 coins

Glad you got clarity. Document those job search activities every single week - it's the one thing people slack on and it's the one thing that can get your payments stopped if EDD comes asking.

0 coins

Good luck with the job hunt. And remember if you ever have questions that UI Online can't answer, actually reaching an EDD agent by phone is possible - just takes the right approach given how backed up their lines are.

0 coins

Congrats on getting it sorted out. The system is confusing but once you understand your specific numbers it gets way more manageable.

0 coins

sorry to hijack but does anyone know if the 26 weeks resets if u get laid off again after finding a new job? like if i collect for 10 weeks, find work, work for 6 months, then get laid off again do i get a fresh 26 weeks

0 coins

Yes! If you return to work and then get laid off again after sufficient time, you can file a new claim with a new benefit year based on your new base period. The new base period would include your most recent employment wages. So yes, a new claim = new 26 week potential, completely separate from any prior claim.

0 coins

ohh ok that makes sense, thanks. was worried I'd only have 16 weeks left on my hypothetical future claim

0 coins

The key is that you need sufficient new wages in the new base period to establish a new valid claim. A few months of work should get you there for most wage levels.

0 coins

Can I ask a dumb question - is the 26 weeks consecutive or can you like pause and restart? Like if I find temp work for a month in the middle of my claim do those weeks pause?

0 coins

Not a dumb question at all. The weeks don't pause per se - but if you're working and earning above your weekly benefit amount, you just don't certify for those weeks (or you certify and show earnings that zero out your payment). Those weeks where you receive $0 from EDD because your earnings exceeded your benefit amount don't count against your 26 weeks. So functionally, yes, working full time temporarily does kind of 'pause' your benefit consumption.

0 coins

Oh that's actually really good to know. So full time temp work month = those weeks don't get eaten up?

0 coins

Correct. Only weeks where you receive an actual EDD payment (even partial) count toward your 26 weeks used. Weeks with $0 payment due to earnings don't count.

0 coins

This is one of those things that's really important to understand. Taking temp or contract work while on UI is almost always worth it financially and it doesn't necessarily burn through your remaining weeks if the earnings are high enough.

0 coins

my EDD claim says 'benefit year end date' - is that the same as when my 26 weeks runs out? im confused about the dates

0 coins

Different things. Your benefit year end date is the 52-week anniversary of when you filed your claim - it's the hard deadline when your claim expires regardless of how many weeks you've used. Your weeks/MBA is the other cap. Your claim ends whichever comes first: using all 26 weeks/hitting your MBA, OR reaching your benefit year end date. If your benefit year ends and you have unused weeks left, those are gone.

0 coins

omg I had no idea. My benefit year ends in 8 months and I have 20 weeks left. So I definitely need to use them before that date.

0 coins

Exactly right. 20 weeks at 2 weeks per certification cycle means you have certifications to go. You should have enough time but don't drag your feet on certifying if you're still unemployed.

0 coins

This is a really important thing to understand about California EDD claims. The benefit year end date catches people off guard all the time.

0 coins

anyone else feel like 26 weeks is not enough time in THIS economy??? took me 8 months to find a job last time I was laid off and I was applying constantly

0 coins

Absolutely feel this. 26 weeks sounds like a lot until you're in week 20 still interviewing and the anxiety sets in. The job market in certain industries is genuinely brutal right now.

0 coins

right like 26 weeks is based on assumptions about how fast people find work that just don't hold in 2025 for a lot of fields

0 coins

Agreed but unfortunately that's the current limit without any federal extension program. The best you can do is maximize your UI benefits while hustling hard on the job search simultaneously. Use the system as intended.

0 coins

Thank you for this thread. I've been too scared to even look at my UI Online account because I didn't want to know how few weeks I have left. Finally logged in after reading this and I actually have more than I thought - 19 weeks remaining. Still stressed but at least I know where I stand now.

0 coins

Same feeling I had when I finally checked! The not knowing is actually worse than knowing. At least with a number you can plan.

0 coins

Yeah I've been paralyzed by uncertainty. Now I can actually make a budget around 19 weeks and approach the job search more strategically instead of just panicking.

0 coins

19 weeks is real time to work with. Stay consistent with certifications, keep job search logs current, and you've got a solid window to find something good rather than just settling out of panic.

0 coins

This thread lowkey helped me too and I wasn't even the one who posted it. The UI Online claim summary tip alone was worth it.
