EDD requiring FMLA phone verification - getting through impossible
I'm at my wit's end trying to reach someone at EDD regarding my FMLA claim. I submitted everything online 3 weeks ago, and yesterday I got this weird message saying I need to 'call and verify' my identity before they can process my claim. I've called the main number about 30 times today and either get disconnected immediately or the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message. Has anyone successfully gotten through for FMLA verification recently? I need this claim processed ASAP since I'm taking care of my mom after her surgery and I'm already dipping into savings. Any advice would be appreciated!

The FMLA/SDI department is completely separate from regular unemployment. Make sure you're calling the right number - should be 1-866-658-8846 specifically for disability/PFL claims. Regular UI agents can't help with FMLA verification. Also, try calling exactly at 8:00 AM when they open, and have your claim number ready. The verification usually only takes about 10 minutes once you get through.

•Thanks for clarifying! I've definitely been calling the regular UI number this whole time... no wonder I couldn't get through to anyone who could help. I'll try the SDI number first thing tomorrow morning.

literally going thru the SAME THING rn!!! been trying for 2 weeks and can't get a human on the phone. Its insane they expect ppl to just sit around calling all day when we're supposed to be caring for sick family members?? ugh

•It's really frustrating! Are you also taking care of a family member? Did you get the same weird verification message?

i had the same issue last month with my pregnancy disability claim. try calling right when they open OR during lunch (12-1) when less people are calling. also, don't press any options when the recording starts - just wait silently and sometimes it'll transfer you to a real person after 2-3 mins

•That's a great tip about not pressing options! I'll definitely try that tomorrow. Did they explain what the verification was about when you finally got through?

•they just needed to confirm my identity and ask some questions about my doctor's certification. took like 5 mins once i finally got someone! good luck!

I've been through this FMLA verification nightmare twice now. The problem is they've severely understaffed the SDI/PFL department but claim volume is still really high. When you call, their system only allows a certain number of calls in the queue, and once it's full, they just hang up on everyone else. After spending 3 days trying to get through the regular way with no success, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically keeps dialing for you until they get through, then they connect you to an EDD agent. Costs money but saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once I actually got through, the verification was simple - they just needed to confirm some information on my application that didn't match their records.

•Thank you for this info! I'm going to try calling the correct number tomorrow morning, but if that doesn't work, I might try that service. Did you find out what information didn't match? I'm worried there might be something wrong with my application but have no idea what it could be.

•In my case, my doctor had put my return-to-work date as 'undetermined' but that triggered their system to flag it. They just needed me to provide an estimated date even if it might change later. These verification calls are usually about simple discrepancies that their automated system flags.

The EDD is such garbage!!! Why make us call when THEY need to verify something? Why not just tell us in the message what they need verified??? They waste everyones time!!!

•right??? and they wonder why everyone's so frustrated with them. a simple email saying exactly what they need would save thousands of phone calls

Just to clarify some confusion in this thread - FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) is actually a federal program that protects your job for up to 12 weeks. What you're dealing with is California's Paid Family Leave (PFL) program, which is administered through EDD's State Disability Insurance (SDI) division. For verification calls, the most common reasons are: 1. Information mismatch between your application and their records 2. Missing physician certification details 3. Identity verification if it's your first time filing 4. Clarification on care recipient relationship One tip that worked for me: call the main SDI number but select the Spanish option, then when a rep answers, politely explain you need English service. The Spanish queue is often much shorter, and all reps are bilingual. Good luck!

•Thank you for clearing that up! You're right, I'm dealing with PFL through SDI, not actually FMLA (though I did file for both). That Spanish line tip is brilliant - I'll definitely try that if I can't get through tomorrow morning. Do they ever send these verification requests via mail, or is it always phone only?

•They typically try phone first, but if they can't reach you after several attempts, they'll send a letter. However, this adds weeks to the process, so it's much faster if you can reach them by phone. Make sure to check your spam folder too, sometimes they'll email you with specific verification instructions.

UPDATE: Finally got through this morning! Called the correct SDI number at 8:01am and only waited about 15 minutes. Turns out they needed to verify my mom's address because it didn't match what they had on file (she moved last year). The rep was actually super helpful and processed everything right away. My claim should be paid within 7-10 days. Thanks everyone for your advice!

•Great news! Glad you got it sorted out. That's typical of these verification issues - usually something simple that just needs a human to review.

•Perfect! That's exactly how these verification calls usually go - quick and simple once you actually reach someone. Glad it worked out for you!

•So glad you got through! This gives me hope that it really is just a simple verification issue. I'm dealing with something similar right now - been trying to reach them for my own PFL claim for over a week. Going to try calling right at 8am tomorrow using the SDI number. Thanks for sharing your success story!
