EDD penalty weeks ended - confused about payment timing and waiting period
Finally finished serving my 10-week EDD penalty period for what they called a 'false statement' (I accidentally reported my gross income instead of net on ONE certification). Now I'm confused about what happens next. Do I just certify like normal for the next two weeks? Will I have to serve a one-week waiting period AGAIN even though I already did that at the beginning of my original claim? Or does the system immediately start paying me after I certify since I've already been penalized for 10 weeks? The EDD website is no help and calling is impossible. Just trying to budget so I know when money might actually hit my account.

After finishing penalty weeks, you'll certify on your regular bi-weekly schedule. The one-week waiting period only applies once per benefit year, so you WON'T have to serve it again. As soon as you certify for your next period, you should get payment for both weeks (assuming you meet all eligibility requirements). Just make sure when you certify that you're reporting any work/earnings correctly. Since you already had one false statement penalty, a second one would be even more severe - could be 15 weeks next time.

•Thank you! That's such a relief to hear I won't have to wait another week. And yeah, I'm triple-checking everything on my certifications now. Learned my lesson the hard way with that 10-week penalty.

Wait, I'm confused. Can someone explain what penalty weeks are? I just started my unemployment claim and I'm worried if I make a mistake I'll get penalized too. How do you avoid this??

•Penalty weeks happen when EDD determines you made a false statement or withholding information. The most common reason is incorrectly reporting earnings. Always report NET earnings (after taxes) on your certification, not gross. And report all work, even if it's just a few hours. Better to over-report than under-report!

Just to add some important clarification - after penalty weeks, you go back to your regular certification schedule, but make sure to check your UI Online account to confirm your certification date hasn't somehow changed. Also, double-check that your claim balance wasn't affected by the penalty period. One thing to watch for: sometimes after penalties, the system might temporarily show your claim as "pending" for review even after certification. Don't panic if this happens - it usually clears up within 24-48 hours, but if it stays pending for more than 3 days, you might want to contact EDD.

•Good point about checking the claim balance! Just logged in and thankfully mine still shows the full amount I had before the penalty weeks started. Will definitely keep an eye on the pending status too.

The EDD is IMPOSSIBLE to reach when you have questions like this. I had a similar situation last month and spent DAYS trying to get through on their phone lines. Complete waste of time. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an EDD rep within 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep confirmed exactly what others are saying - you certify normally after penalty weeks without another waiting period. At least that's one thing EDD gets right!

•Thanks for the tip! I might try that service if I run into any issues with my next payment. The thought of spending hours on the phone with EDD again makes me want to scream.

Im currently on week 6 of a 9 week penalty. This has been AWFUL. Did your UI Online account show each penalty week individually? Mine shows them all marked as "Disqualified - False Statement" but doesnt show how many Ive served vs how many I have left. I have to manually count them every time.

•Yeah, same experience here. It's super frustrating! I had to keep track on my own calendar. The UI Online system just shows each week as "Disqualified" with no counter or indication of progress. I honestly wasn't 100% sure I had completed all 10 weeks until I checked my payment history and counted manually.

Everyone's giving good advice but I want to add that sometimes EDD puts an additional review on your first certification after penalty weeks. Happened to me. Everything went pending for a week until they verified I had served all penalty weeks. So don't spend the money before it actually hits your account, just in case there's a delay.

•That's an excellent point that doesn't get mentioned enough. After penalties, EDD often adds an automatic review flag to the next certification. If this happens, calling can actually help expedite the review. Document everything and be ready to explain your situation clearly if you need to call.

•I was working part-time while on unemployment and reported my gross income instead of net income on one certification. It was honestly just a mistake - I reported the amount on my paystub before taxes/deductions instead of after. Apparently that's considered a "false statement" even though I wasn't trying to cheat the system. Now I triple-check everything!
