EDD payment for partial unemployment - got a job mid-certification period
Just started a new job last week after being unemployed for a month. When I certified yesterday, I reported my earnings for the second week (about $840) but the first week I had zero income. My question is - will EDD still pay me for that first week where I didn't work, or does finding a job cancel my entire claim? The status just says 'pending' right now. I'm worried they'll deny both weeks even though I was legitimately unemployed for that first week. Anyone dealt with this partial certification situation before?

You should definitely receive payment for the first week! This is called partial unemployment. As long as you reported everything correctly, they'll pay you for the week you had no earnings. The second week might be reduced or $0 depending on your weekly benefit amount versus what you earned. Just make sure you continue certifying until you see that first week paid, even if you're fully employed now.

•Thanks for the quick reply! That's a huge relief. My weekly benefit amount is $450, so I figured the second week would be $0 since I made more than that. Do you know how long it typically stays pending before they approve it?

•Good to hear! I was worried they'd just cancel everything once they saw I had income. Fingers crossed mine processes soon.

BEWARE they might still put you through ID verification and all that nonsense even for just ONE WEEK OF PAYMENT!! I got a job after being on unemployment and they made me jump through hoops for that last payment - so stupid!! They called me for an "eligibility interview" 3 weeks later even though I already told them I was working!!! 🤬

•Oh great, that's what I'm afraid of. I hope they don't make me do all that. Did you eventually get your payment?

•Yeah but it took FOREVER and I had to keep calling them to check what was happening. They're so disorganized!

You'll receive payment for the week you didn't work as long as you met all other eligibility requirements (available for work, searching for work, etc). For the week you worked, you won't receive payment if your earnings exceed your weekly benefit amount plus $25. This is standard partial UI procedure. The pending status is normal and could take 7-10 days to process, especially if this is your first certification. If it stays pending for more than two weeks, you should contact EDD directly. Also, even though you're working now, you technically should continue certifying until you see that first week paid. Just accurately report your new earnings each time.

•Wait a minute, I thought it was your weekly benefit amount plus $25 DIVIDED BY 4? Thats what the EDD person told me when i had this exact situation last month...

•You might be confusing it with the partial earnings formula. EDD uses a specific calculation: they disregard the first 25% of your earnings, then subtract the remainder from your weekly benefit amount. That's different from the "weekly benefit amount plus $25" formula used in some other states. California EDD's formula effectively lets you earn about 25% of your weekly benefit amount before reductions begin.

I had to call them when this happened to me because my payment got stuck in pending for 3 weeks. I couldn't get through on the regular number no matter how many times I tried. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The agent pushed my payment through right away and explained that the system sometimes flags claims when there's a change like reporting new employment. Definitely worth calling if yours stays pending.

•Thanks for sharing this! If mine stays pending for more than a week, I'll check it out. I've heard the regular EDD phone lines are basically impossible to get through.

Make sure u report ur earnings for the correct week!!! I messed this up and put my earnings on the wrong week and it took 6 weeks to fix and I had to pay back an overpayment plus a penalty!! The certification weeks run Sunday to Saturday so double check that u reported for the right dates.

•Oh that's good to know. I'm pretty sure I put it for the right week, but I'll definitely double-check. The penalty sounds scary - I definitely don't want to deal with that!

Just wanted to add something important - if your payment stays pending for more than a week, it could be because they automatically schedule an eligibility interview when your employment status changes. Check your UI Online account for any notifications or check your mail for an interview appointment letter. You want to be available for that call if they schedule one, because missing it will delay your payment even more!

•I'll definitely keep an eye out for that! I check my UI Online account daily, but I'll make sure to watch my mail too. Thanks for the heads up.

By the way, did anyone tell you about the "false statement penalty weeks" you can get if you make ANY mistakes on your certification?? My cousin got 5 penalty weeks because he accidentally put down the wrong start date for his new job. The EDD system is designed to PUNISH people!!

•While EDD can impose penalty weeks for false statements, they're typically applied when there's evidence of intentional misrepresentation, not honest mistakes. If you make an error, contact EDD immediately to correct it. Most honest mistakes can be resolved without penalties as long as you're proactive about fixing them.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my payment for the first week was approved! It switched from pending to paid this morning. Thanks for all the helpful advice. For anyone else in this situation - yes, you do get paid for partial unemployment when you only work one of the two certification weeks. The second week shows $0 since I earned more than my benefit amount.
