EDD benefits running out - can I switch to EBT/SNAP? Processing times?
My unemployment benefits are about to run out next month (used up almost all 26 weeks) and I'm still struggling to find work in my field. I've been living on savings but that's dwindling fast. I heard about EBT/SNAP food benefits but don't know if I qualify while still receiving unemployment or if I should wait until my EDD benefits completely end. Does anyone know the application process and typical wait times for EBT approval in California? Would applying now while still on unemployment hurt my chances? Any info would be super helpful as I'm trying to plan my budget for the next few months.

You can definitely apply for CalFresh (that's what SNAP/EBT is called in California) while still on unemployment. Your UI benefits count as income when they calculate your eligibility, but many people on unemployment still qualify, especially if you have housing costs. The application process is pretty straightforward - you can apply online through BenefitsCal.com or at your county social services office. Processing usually takes about 30 days, so apply ASAP rather than waiting until your benefits run out. Make sure you gather your income docs, rent/mortgage info, and utility bills before applying. They'll want to see everything.

•Thank you! I didn't realize I could apply while still receiving some unemployment. Do you know if the 30-day processing is pretty consistent or does it sometimes take longer? Just trying to figure out timing with my budget.

EBT is handled by a completely different department than EDD - you'll be dealing with county social services rather than the state unemployment office. When I applied last year, they processed my application in about 3 weeks. You'll need to do a phone interview too - they'll call you at the scheduled time to verify your information. Don't miss that call or it delays everything!

•That's good to know about the phone interview - thanks for the heads up about not missing the call! Did you have to provide a lot of documentation for the application?

•Yes, they wanted to see my bank statements, rent agreement, utility bills, and proof of income (which would be your EDD award letter). Have digital copies of everything ready to upload. The online application lets you save progress and come back to it which is helpful since it takes some time to complete.

This might not be directly related to your question, but have you contacted EDD about a possible UI extension? There are sometimes extensions available depending on your specific situation and the state's current unemployment rate. It's worth checking if you might qualify for any additional weeks while you're also pursuing the CalFresh option. I'd also recommend checking out Claimyr.com if you have trouble getting through to an EDD representative about potential extensions. They have a service that helps you connect with an actual EDD agent instead of dealing with the frustrating phone system. I used them when my claim had issues and got through to someone in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works.

•I hadn't thought about extensions - I was under the impression they weren't offering any right now, but you're right that it's worth asking about. Thanks for the Claimyr tip too. I'll check out that video. The EDD phone system is a nightmare.

I had to apply for EBT last year when I couldn't find work after my unemployment ran out. THEY TAKE FOREVER!!!! Applied in February and didn't get approved until APRIL!!! Had to borrow money from family just to eat. The system is totally broken. And then they make you jump through a million hoops just to keep your benefits. You have to report ANY income changes right away or they'll say you committed fraud. It's ridiculous!!

•That hasn't been my experience at all. My application was processed in 2 weeks and the caseworker was super helpful. Maybe it depends on which county you're in? I'm in Sacramento County.

•Well GOOD FOR YOU but I'm in LA County where everything is overcrowded and understaffed. My caseworker never returned my calls. Different counties = different experiences.

I was wondering something similar actually... has anyone here dealt with applying for both EBT and Medi-Cal at the same time? I know this is a bit off-topic from the original EDD question but since we're discussing benefits transitions... I'm getting close to the end of my unemployment too and worried about both food AND healthcare. Can you apply for both in the same application? My EDD claim had so many issues I'm nervous about dealing with more government agencies.

•Yes! You can apply for both CalFresh and Medi-Cal in the same application on BenefitsCal.com. It's actually designed to let you apply for multiple programs at once. The income limits are different for each program (Medi-Cal is more generous), but the application process gathers all the info needed for both. They'll evaluate your eligibility for each program separately.

Just a quick tip - make sure you include ALL your expenses when you apply for CalFresh. A lot of people don't realize that having higher expenses (especially housing and utilities) can help you qualify for more benefits even if your income is the same. Make sure to include your full rent/mortgage, utilities, childcare costs if applicable, and any medical expenses. Every dollar counts!

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! I'm going to apply for CalFresh today through BenefitsCal.com and make sure I have all my documentation ready. I'll also call EDD to ask about possible extensions using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Really appreciate all the guidance - navigating these different benefit systems is pretty overwhelming.

Good luck with your CalFresh application! One more thing to keep in mind - if you do get approved for CalFresh before your unemployment runs out, make sure to report to EDD that you're receiving food assistance. It shouldn't affect your UI benefits at all (CalFresh isn't counted as income), but it's better to be transparent about all benefits you're receiving. Also, once you start receiving CalFresh, you'll need to do periodic reviews (usually every 6 months) to maintain your benefits, so keep all your documentation organized. The system can be confusing but you've got this!
