How quickly will I know if my CalFresh application is approved after submitting verification documents?
I just had my CalFresh phone interview yesterday morning and the worker asked me to submit some verification documents (my last 3 pay stubs and my rental agreement). I uploaded everything to BenefitsCal right after our call ended around 11am. The worker said they'd review everything, but didn't tell me when I'd know if I'm approved or denied. My cupboards are getting pretty empty and I'm trying to figure out if I should borrow money from someone for groceries or if my EBT card might arrive soon. Anyone know how long it typically takes to get a decision after submitting all requested documents? Is there any way to check my application status online? This is my first time applying for food assistance.

The county is legally required to make a decision on your application within 30 days from when you first applied (not from your interview date). But in my experience, once you've completed the interview and submitted all verification documents, you'll usually hear back within 3-7 business days. Have you checked your BenefitsCal account? Sometimes they update your status there before sending the official notice in the mail.

•Thank you! I checked BenefitsCal this morning but it still shows as 'Pending' with no other details. I applied exactly 13 days ago so I guess they still have over two weeks to decide. Really hope it doesn't take that long since I'm stretching my last $20 until next Friday. Do you know if they'll call me with the decision or just send something in the mail?

when i applied last year it took like 2 days after i sent in my stuff. my friend waited almost 3 weeks tho so i think it depends on your county and how busy they are. they never called me just got a letter and then the ebt card came seperately

•That's a huge difference! I'm in Los Angeles County if that matters. Really hoping I'm on the 2-day timeline rather than the 3-week one.

In most counties, you'll typically get a decision within 7-10 days after submitting all required verification documents. LA County can sometimes be slower due to high volume. Since you already completed your interview and submitted everything they requested, you're in a good position. A few things to know: 1. They will mail you a Notice of Action (NOA) with their decision 2. If approved, your EBT card will be mailed separately and can take 5-7 additional days to arrive 3. Benefits are prorated from your application date, not approval date 4. Your BenefitsCal account should update before the physical mail arrives If you're in urgent need of food, consider calling 211 to find local food banks or emergency food assistance while you wait. They might be able to help bridge the gap.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I didn't know benefits would be backdated to when I applied. And good tip about 211 - I'll give them a call today.

Call them!!! Don't just wait around!! I was in the exact same situation last month and waited for TWO WEEKS after my interview before I finally called. Turns out they had "misplaced" my pay stubs and couldn't process my application. As soon as I called and spoke to a worker, they found my documents and approved me THE SAME DAY!!! The system is so broken, you have to advocate for yourself!!

•omg that happened to me too! they kept saying they never got my birth certificate even tho i uploaded it twice!!

•That's scary to hear! I'll definitely call to follow up. Did you just call the main CalFresh number for your county?

I had my interview on a Tuesday and got approved Friday that same week. My EBT card came in the mail about 5 days later. But my sister applied in the same county and it took her almost the full 30 days because they kept requesting more verification documents. Hope yours goes quick!

If you're having trouble reaching someone at the county office (which is super common), I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was in your exact situation last month - submitted everything but couldn't get through to check my status. I used Claimyr.com and they got me connected to a live CalFresh worker in about 10 minutes. Saved me hours of hold time and frustration. They have a quick demo video here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. Worth it when you're anxious about your benefits and can't get through on the regular line.

•wait is that a real thing? does it cost money? the county never answers when i call them

•Yes, it's a real service. They do charge a fee, but for me it was worth it because I needed to resolve my issue right away. The regular county line kept disconnecting me after being on hold for 2+ hours.

Don't count on anything happening quickly! The 30-day timeline is the MAXIMUM they're supposed to take, but in my experience they use every single one of those days even when you've given them everything. The system is DESIGNED to make people give up. My advice? Call every 48 hours to check on status. Be polite but persistent. Document who you talk to and what they say each time. The squeaky wheel gets the grease in this broken system!!!

•Thanks for the advice. I'll start calling tomorrow to check on it. Really can't afford to wait the full 30 days but I know they might make me.

One more thing I should mention - if you're experiencing immediate food insecurity, make sure to ask about expedited services when you call. If you have less than $150 in monthly income and less than $100 in resources, or if your housing costs are more than your income and resources combined, you may qualify for expedited CalFresh, which can be processed within 3 days. Many workers don't automatically check for this even though they should.

•I did ask about expedited services when I first applied but they said I didn't qualify because my monthly income is about $1,975 (though after rent and utilities I have almost nothing left). But thank you for mentioning it because maybe others reading this thread will benefit from knowing about that option!

It's definitely worth calling to check on your application status, but be prepared to wait on hold for quite a while. In my experience, calling early in the morning (right when they open) or mid-week tends to have shorter wait times. Also, when you do get through, ask them to put notes in your file about your urgent need for food assistance - sometimes that can help prioritize your application.

BTW if ur approved dont forget they load benefits at different times each month depending on the last digit of ur case number. My sister didnt know this and kept checking her card everyday lol

I went through this same anxiety-inducing wait just a few months ago! In my case (also LA County), I got my approval notice exactly 6 days after submitting my verification documents. The EBT card took another 4 days to arrive after that. One thing that helped me while waiting was visiting the LA Regional Food Bank locations - they have several distribution sites throughout the county and don't require any paperwork, just proof of residence. You can find locations at lafoodbank.org. Also, many grocery stores like Ralphs and Vons have food rescue programs where they give away items close to expiration. It's not ideal, but it helped me stretch those last few dollars until my benefits kicked in. Hang in there - you're almost through the process!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience and especially for the LA Regional Food Bank tip! I had no idea they had multiple locations and didn't require paperwork. I'm going to look up the closest one to me right now. It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing recently in the same county. 6 days sounds much more manageable than 30! I'll definitely check out those grocery store programs too - every bit helps when you're stretching your last few dollars. Really appreciate you taking the time to share these resources.

I'm in a similar situation and the waiting is so stressful! I had my interview last week and submitted everything they asked for, but my BenefitsCal account still just says "pending" with no other details. The uncertainty is the worst part - like you, I'm trying to figure out if I should ask family for help with groceries or wait it out. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like calling to check on status is definitely worth doing, even if the wait times are brutal. I'm also going to look into those food bank options people mentioned because at least that would help with the immediate need while we wait for the system to do its thing. Hope you hear back soon!

•I totally understand that stress! The uncertainty really is the hardest part when you're already worried about having enough food. It sounds like we're in almost identical situations. Based on what everyone's shared here, I'm definitely going to call tomorrow morning right when they open to check on my status - seems like that's been helpful for several people. And yes, the food bank resources that Morita shared sound like a lifesaver while we wait. Maybe we'll both get good news soon! Fingers crossed for both of us.

I work as a case worker in Riverside County and wanted to share some insight from the other side of the process. After you submit verification documents, we typically aim to review applications within 3-5 business days, but it can take longer during busy periods (like the beginning/end of months when many people apply). A few tips that might help: 1) When you call to check status, have your case number ready - it speeds things up significantly. 2) If your documents were uploaded to BenefitsCal, we can see them immediately, but sometimes there's a delay in our system updating the status online. 3) Don't hesitate to mention if you're facing immediate food insecurity - we do have some flexibility to prioritize urgent cases within our workload. The fact that you completed your interview and submitted everything the same day puts you in a good position. Most decisions at our office are made within a week of receiving complete documentation. Good luck!

•This is incredibly helpful to get perspective from someone who actually works in the system! Thank you for taking the time to share these insights. I have my case number saved in my phone so I'll definitely have that ready when I call. It's reassuring to know that you can see uploaded documents immediately even if the online status doesn't update right away - I was worried maybe my documents didn't go through properly. I'll make sure to mention my food situation when I call since you said there's some flexibility for urgent cases. Really appreciate you sharing what the typical timeline looks like from your office's perspective - knowing that most decisions happen within a week of complete documentation gives me a much more realistic expectation than just "up to 30 days." Thanks again for the insider tips!

Just wanted to give everyone an update - I called this morning right when they opened at 8am like several of you suggested, and after about a 45-minute wait, I got through to a really helpful worker. Turns out my application was actually approved yesterday! She said the approval letter was mailed out today and my EBT card should arrive within 5-7 business days. I'm so relieved! Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and advice, especially about calling to follow up and the food bank resources. For anyone else in a similar situation - definitely call to check your status even if the online portal still shows "pending." The worker told me their system can be delayed in updating the online status by several days. Fingers crossed my EBT card arrives quickly, but at least now I know help is coming!

Wow, reading through this whole thread has been so helpful! I'm new to the community and currently going through my first CalFresh application too. Also want to say thank you to everyone who shared food bank resources and tips about expedited services - this community is amazing for supporting each other through these stressful processes. As someone who works at a local food pantry, I wanted to add a few more resources that might help while you're waiting for your decision. In addition to the LA Regional Food Bank that Morita mentioned, check out the Food Forward app - they partner with grocery stores and restaurants to rescue fresh produce and prepared foods. You can see real-time availability at pickup locations near you. Also, many churches and community centers do weekly food distributions that don't require any documentation - just show up. If you're near any college campuses, most now have student food pantries that are open to community members too. The 211 suggestion was spot-on - they can give you a comprehensive list of everything in your specific area. I see this stress every day with people waiting for their benefits, and you're definitely not alone in this struggle. The fact that you completed your interview and submitted everything so quickly is a really good sign!

•Thank you so much for sharing these additional resources! As someone who's currently in the waiting phase for my CalFresh decision, it's incredibly helpful to get suggestions from someone who works directly with food insecurity issues. I hadn't heard of the Food Forward app before - that sounds amazing for getting fresh produce while waiting for benefits to come through. The tip about college campus food pantries being open to community members is really valuable too. I'm going to download the Food Forward app right now and call 211 today to get a full list of resources in my area. It's so reassuring to know there are people like you working to help bridge these gaps while people navigate the CalFresh system. Thank you for the encouragement about completing my interview and documents quickly - I really needed to hear that today!

I'm also going through my first CalFresh application and this entire thread has been incredibly helpful!
