EDD asking about past disability when certifying - wrong info in system?

Really confused right now and need advice! I just tried certifying for my first two weeks of unemployment (got my hours reduced at the restaurant where I work), and the EDD certification had questions about disability? It specifically asked 'You were on disability - are you still?' and wanted to know when my doctor released me and when I returned to work. The thing is, I haven't been on ANY disability since early 2023 - that was for a back injury that healed completely. Should I just enter the old 2023 dates in the system? I'm worried if I put the wrong info they'll flag my account or delay my payments. Has anyone dealt with this strange disability question during regular UI certification? Should I call EDD to fix this or just answer with my old disability dates?

Definitely call EDD to clarify this before answering those questions. Their system is probably showing outdated information that needs to be corrected. If you answer with the old dates, it might trigger a review of your claim since the system could interpret it as you currently transitioning from disability to unemployment. This happens because sometimes their databases don't communicate properly between disability and unemployment divisions.

Thanks! I'll try calling tomorrow morning. Do you know if this will delay my payments? I'm getting worried about rent next month.

3 weeks?? That's so long! Did you keep certifying during that time or did you have to wait until they fixed it?

This is a common issue I've seen with EDD's system. What's happening is that your previous disability claim from 2023 is still active in their database, and their system automatically generates these questions when you file for UI after having a disability claim. Here's what you should do: 1. DO NOT enter incorrect information. Never put false dates just to get through the certification process. 2. You need to speak with a claims specialist who can correct your account status. Try calling the EDD customer service line at 1-800-300-5616, but be prepared - it's extremely difficult to get through. 3. While waiting, you should still continue to certify each period. Answer the questions accurately with your 2023 disability dates, but also use the comments section to explain the situation. 4. Document all your attempts to contact them in case you need to appeal later.

Thank you for the detailed advice! So I should go ahead and put my 2023 dates in there but also add a comment explaining? I didn't know there was a comments section. Where exactly is that when certifying?

The comments section appears after you answer all the certification questions - it's where you can provide additional information. It's small and easy to miss, but it's important to use in situations like yours. Make your explanation clear but brief: "Disability ended in 2023, not currently on disability, this is a UI claim for reduced hours at current job.

This is TERRIBLE advice!! The comment section doesn't actually get read by real people most of the time! I left detailed comments for 6 weeks straight and my claim still got messed up. The EDD system is basically designed to make you fail.

I had this exact issue last month! Good luck getting through on that 800 number - I tried for two weeks straight with no luck. Always got the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then they'd hang up. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep within 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once I got through to someone, they fixed the disability flag on my account in about 5 minutes. The rep told me this happens all the time because their disability and unemployment systems don't communicate properly.

is this a legit service? sounds sketchy af

It worked for me - they just help you get through the phone system. The actual conversation is just between you and the EDD rep.

To answer your question about delays - yes, this will likely cause a delay in your payments until it's resolved. When the system detects potential overlap between disability and unemployment, it often puts payments on hold pending review. That's why it's crucial to get this fixed ASAP. Make sure when you talk to the representative that you get a confirmation number or case number for the call. Ask them to note in your file that you reported the error. This creates a paper trail that can help if you end up needing to appeal a determination later.

Thanks again. I'll definitely ask for a confirmation number. Starting to get really anxious about this whole process - why does everything with EDD have to be so complicated?

Quick update on your comment section question: When you're certifying online through UI Online, after answering all the standard questions, there should be a section labeled something like "Additional Information" or "Remarks" before you submit. It varies slightly depending on your specific situation, but it should appear if the system detects potential issues with your certification. If you don't see it, that's okay - the most important thing is getting through to a representative who can fix the underlying issue with your claim. In the meantime, answer all questions truthfully even if it means your payment might be delayed. It's much easier to resolve a delay than to correct false information later.

my cousin works for edd and she says this happens ALL THE TIME. their computers are from like 1992 or something lol. you HAVE to call and get it fixed or your claim will get stuck in review forever

Update: I finally got through to EDD this morning after trying for 2 hours! The rep confirmed exactly what you all said - my old disability claim from 2023 was still showing as active in their system even though it ended over a year ago. They fixed it on their end and told me to go ahead and certify again. The disability questions are now gone from my certification! She said my payments should process normally now. Thanks everyone for your help!

That's great news! Glad you got it resolved. Just a tip for the future - make sure you certify consistently every two weeks even if you're having issues. Maintaining that certification history is important for your claim.

Congrats on getting it resolved so quickly! For anyone else reading this thread with similar issues, here are a few key takeaways: 1) Never put false information in your certification even if it seems easier, 2) Keep calling EDD until you get through - persistence pays off, 3) Ask for confirmation numbers when you speak to reps, and 4) The disability/UI system overlap is a known bug that happens frequently. Your experience shows that when you actually reach a knowledgeable rep, these issues can be fixed pretty fast. Hope your payments come through smoothly now!
