EDD appeal hearing by phone done today - how long until judge's decision?
Had my EDD appeal hearing today with an admin law judge over the phone. Super stressful!! Been waiting almost 2 months just to get this phone interview scheduled after being disqualified for supposedly 'refusing suitable work' (which is NOT what happened). The judge asked tons of questions about my previous job, why I left, and what kind of work I've been looking for. The hearing lasted about 45 minutes. Has anyone gone through this process recently? How long did it take to get the judge's decision after your hearing? I'm literally checking my mailbox every day because I'm down to my last $230 and rent is due next week. Getting desperate here...

I had my phone appeal in January and got the decision exactly 10 days later in the mail. The judge ruled in my favor and I received all my back pay (about $6,200) within a week after that. Make sure your mailing address is correct in the system. They don't email the decision - it's strictly through postal mail. Good luck!

•Thanks for the info! 10 days doesn't sound too bad. Did you get any indication during your hearing which way the judge was leaning? Mine seemed pretty neutral but asked a LOT of follow-up questions when the EDD rep was talking.

•seriously?? 3 weeks is insane. they should have to tell you how long it's gonna take at least. the whole system is broken.

The official timeframe from EDD is that judges try to issue decisions within 10-14 calendar days after the hearing, but it can take up to 30 days in some cases. The more complex your case is (or if they need to review additional documentation), the longer it typically takes. While you're waiting, I strongly recommend continuing to certify for benefits even though you won't get paid until after a favorable decision. If you win your appeal, you'll need those weeks properly certified to receive back pay. Also, double-check your UI Online account daily - sometimes the decision shows up there before the mail arrives.

•Thank you! I'll definitely keep certifying. The judge actually reminded me about that at the end of the hearing. My case seems pretty straightforward - just disagreement about whether I refused suitable work or if the job offer wasn't appropriate for my skills/experience. Hoping it's on the shorter end of that timeframe.

I had my appeal hearing last Friday and I'm in the same boat waiting anxiously! My judge seemed pretty sympathetic when the EDD rep couldn't provide documentation about why they disqualified me in the first place. Fingers crossed for both of us! This whole experience has been a nightmare.

•Wishing you luck too! It's so stressful. I prepped for days gathering all my evidence and then the hearing itself was way more casual than I expected. The EDD rep on my call kept putting the judge on hold to look things up which was super annoying.

My sister got her decision in like 4 days but my coworker waited almost a month so I think it totally depends on the judge and how many cases they have. Btw did you get a chance to talk during your hearing or did the judge just ask questions? My hearing is next week and I'm nervous!

•Not OP but when I had my hearing, the judge gave me time at the end to make additional statements. Be prepared with your main points because they run these hearings on tight schedules. And speak clearly - they record everything.

Have you tried calling EDD to check on your claim status? I know it's nearly impossible to get through, but I used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes when I was in a similar situation. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km An EDD rep can sometimes see if a decision has been entered into the system before you get the letter. Saved me days of anxiety after my appeal hearing.

•I haven't tried calling yet because I figured they wouldn't have any info this soon after the hearing (just happened this morning). But if I don't hear anything by next week I might try that service. Did they actually have info about your appeal when you called?

•Yes, they could see that a decision had been made and entered into the system, even though my letter hadn't arrived yet. The rep couldn't tell me the exact decision due to some policy, but she did say I should expect payment soon, which was a huge relief. The waiting is the worst part!

•Oh wow, that's a long time! Mine just involves one employer so hopefully it won't take that long. Did you win your appeal?

One important thing to note: if the judge rules in your favor, your EDD account won't necessarily update right away. Even after you receive the favorable decision letter, it can take 7-10 business days for EDD to process the judge's order and release your payments. If it goes beyond that timeframe, that's when you need to start making calls. Also, if the decision is not in your favor, you have 30 days from the mailing date (not the date you receive it) to file an appeal to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, which is the second level of appeal.

•This is why the whole system is so frustrating! Even when you win, you still have to wait forever for the money you're legally entitled to. I'm about to lose my car because of how long this is all taking.

the whole system is rigged against us regular people. good luck but don't hold your breath. they made me wait 8 weeks just to DENY me again after my appeal hearing. total waste of time.

•I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but many appeals are successful. According to official statistics, about 40-45% of EDD appeals result in decisions favorable to the claimant. It really depends on the specific circumstances and evidence presented.
