Does claiming unemployment affect credit score? California EDD claimants need to know
So I just got laid off from my warehouse job last month and I finally filed my California EDD claim. Everything seems to be processing okay but my wife is freaking out about our finances and keeps asking me one thing over and over - does claiming unemployment affect credit score? We have a mortgage and two car payments and I'm terrified we're going to tank our credit while I'm collecting UI benefits. I've been googling like crazy but getting conflicting info. Some sites say it has zero impact, others hint that it could indirectly hurt you if you can't make payments. Can anyone who's actually been through the California EDD process shed some light on this? Has filing for unemployment or receiving UI benefits ever shown up on your credit report or caused issues with lenders?

Short answer: no, claiming unemployment through California EDD does not affect your credit score at all. The EDD doesn't report anything to Equifax, TransUnion, or Experian. Filing a UI claim is not a financial inquiry, it's not a loan, it's not a line of credit - there's nothing for the credit bureaus to even pick up. Your credit score won't budge one point just because you filed for unemployment benefits.

AuthorThat's such a relief to hear. My wife was convinced it was going to wreck our score just from filing. So the claim itself is completely invisible to the credit agencies?

Amara Nwosu
Yep, completely invisible. I've filed twice in my life and checked my credit both times right after - nothing changed from the EDD side at all.

This is correct. Think of it this way - the government provides unemployment insurance as a safety net program. They have no reason or mechanism to report it to credit bureaus. It's not debt.

Your wife is worried about the right thing but for the wrong reason. The credit risk isn't FROM claiming unemployment - it's from what might happen DURING unemployment if your UI benefits don't fully cover your expenses and you start missing payments or maxing out credit cards. THAT will hurt your score. The California EDD claim itself? Completely neutral. Focus your energy on budgeting around whatever weekly benefit amount you get approved for.

AuthorThat makes total sense actually. So it's really an indirect risk rather than a direct one. How long does it typically take for California EDD to start paying out so I can figure out our budget?

usually takes 3-4 weeks for first payment if no issues with the claim. if it goes to adjudication it can take way longer unfortunately

This is the real answer right here. I didn't touch my credit cards for 6 months of unemployment and my score actually went UP because I kept paying everything on time with my UI payments.

Can I add one more thing since we're on the topic - I went through a California EDD claim last year and was paranoid about every financial angle. One thing that CAN indirectly show up: if you apply for new credit (credit card, loan, etc.) while unemployed, lenders might ask for income verification and unemployment benefits may not meet their income thresholds. That's not a credit score hit per se but it can affect approvals. Just something to be aware of while you're on UI.

AuthorOh that's a really good point I hadn't even considered. So no new credit applications while on EDD benefits, got it.

technically you can still apply, some lenders count unemployment income, just depends on the lender and what you're applying for

ElectricDreamer
Mortgage lenders are the strictest about this. Most won't count unemployment as qualifying income for a new mortgage. But for existing mortgage payments you're fine as long as you keep paying.

I had the same exact question when I filed my California EDD claim a few months ago. Was convinced it was going to show up somewhere and ruin everything. Spent like 2 hours on the phone trying to reach an EDD agent to ask directly because I couldn't get a clear answer online. Total nightmare trying to get through - kept getting disconnected or hitting automated menus with no live agent option. Someone in another thread recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) for reaching actual EDD phone agents and honestly it saved me so much stress. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - basically gets you connected to a real EDD rep without the endless hold torture. The agent confirmed everything people are saying here - UI claims have zero interaction with credit reporting systems.

AuthorI might try that if I need to call EDD about my actual claim status. Did you find the agent helpful once you got through?

ive been trying to call edd for two weeks straight. gonna look into this claimyr thing bc im losing my mind

Good tip. EDD phone lines are brutal. Any tool that actually gets you to a live agent is worth knowing about.

ok so my cousin told me that employers can see if you filed for unemployment and it goes on some kind of permanent record that affects your ability to get hired. is that true?? now im worried about something different lol
0 coins
Giovanni Moretti
No, that's not true either. Employers cannot see your unemployment claim history when doing a background check. Standard background checks show criminal history, sometimes credit (with your permission), employment verification - not UI claim history. Your cousin has some bad information.

AstroExplorer
Yeah this is a myth. California EDD claim information is confidential. Future employers have no access to it.

oh thank god. my cousin freaks me out with this stuff lol

I work in HR and can confirm - we do not see unemployment claim history in ANY background check we run. I've never once seen a report that showed UI filing information. That data simply isn't included in standard employment background screening. The only time unemployment might come up is if you list a job on your resume and we call your former employer for a reference - they might mention there was a layoff - but that's just normal conversation not a formal record.

yeah seriously. i was scared of all this stuff when i filed too. glad to know its not as scary as it seems

Something nobody mentioned yet - when you DO get hired again after unemployment, your new employer WILL pay slightly different unemployment insurance tax rates that are influenced by their claims history as a company. But this affects the EMPLOYER not you personally and definitely not your credit. Just an interesting behind-the-scenes thing about how unemployment insurance is funded in California.

Mei Liu
AuthorOh interesting, I had no idea the system worked like that. So it's basically the employers who bear the cost on the back end.
0 coins
Liam O'Donnell
Exactly right. The UI system is employer-funded through payroll taxes. You earned those benefits. Never feel guilty for claiming what you're entitled to.

GENUINELY had a panic attack when my friend told me filing for California EDD would "flag" my account at my bank and trigger some kind of financial review. Is ANY of this true?? I'm three weeks into adjudication and stressed beyond belief already without worrying about banks and credit and everything else
0 coins
AstroExplorer
None of that is true. Banks don't get flagged when you receive EDD payments. Unemployment benefits deposited to your bank account look like any other direct deposit. No flags, no reviews, nothing unusual from the bank's perspective.

The adjudication stress is real though, I feel you. Three weeks is a long time to wait. Have you been able to reach anyone at EDD to get a status update?

I can't get through to anyone. Just hold music and then it disconnects. I don't know what to do

For the person stuck in adjudication who can't get through on the phone - seriously try Claimyr. I mentioned it above but it's genuinely the only thing that worked for me when I was in a similar situation. claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains the process. Getting an actual live EDD agent on the line during adjudication can make a huge difference because sometimes there are simple issues holding up your claim that an agent can flag or note on your file.

I just checked out the video. This looks like it might actually work. I've literally tried calling at every hour of the day and can't get through.

Let me give you a more complete financial picture since this thread is going in a helpful direction. Things that DO affect credit score while unemployed: (1) missing any minimum payments on existing debt, (2) your credit utilization ratio going up if you lean on credit cards, (3) any new hard inquiries if you apply for new credit. Things that do NOT affect credit: (1) filing your California EDD claim, (2) receiving UI benefit payments, (3) certifying for weekly benefits, (4) any EDD correspondence or notices. The EDD system and the credit reporting system are completely separate worlds with no data sharing between them.

AuthorThis is the clearest breakdown of the whole thing I've seen. Should basically be pinned at the top of this thread.

Exactly this. I'd add - if you're worried about credit during unemployment, set up autopay for minimum payments on everything immediately so even if you lose track of dates you won't miss a payment.

autopay tip is underrated. saved me from a missed payment when i was dealing with EDD adjudication and completely lost track of time

random q but does it affect your credit if you get an overpayment notice from EDD and they want money back? that happened to my roommate and she panicked
0 coins
Giovanni Moretti
The overpayment notice itself doesn't hit credit. HOWEVER, if EDD eventually refers an unpaid overpayment to collections (which can happen with large amounts), THAT would affect credit. Your roommate should contact EDD about setting up a repayment plan or filing an appeal if she disputes the overpayment amount. Don't ignore those notices.
0 coins
AstroExplorer
Yes - appeal deadlines on overpayment notices are strict. Usually 30 days from the notice date. Missing that window makes everything harder.

Keisha Williams
oh no she definitely got a notice a while back. i'll tell her to call EDD asap

i filed california edd like 6 months ago and just checked my credit out of curiosity after seeing this thread. score is literally the same as before i filed. not one point difference from the filing itself. the only thing that changed was a small dip when i used more of my credit card limit during the first month before benefits kicked in, which i've since paid back down

Real data > theory. This matches what everyone is saying. UI claim = no credit impact, managing your finances DURING unemployment is the actual variable.

Paolo Rizzo
Not to derail but since we're talking about financial stuff during unemployment - does anyone know if you have to report unemployment benefits as income on your taxes? My claim just got approved and I'm thinking ahead
0 coins
ElectricDreamer
Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income at the federal level. California EDD actually does NOT tax benefits at the state level (California is one of the states that exempts UI from state income tax) but federal taxes apply. You can elect to have federal taxes withheld directly from your UI payments through EDD or set money aside yourself. Either way, don't forget this at tax time.
0 coins
Dmitry Smirnov
This gets so many people. They spend every dollar of their UI payments then get hit with a federal tax bill they weren't expecting. Withhold the 10% federal from the start if you can afford to.

Paolo Rizzo
wow ok good to know. gonna set up the withholding through my EDD account right now

ugh still trying to get through to edd about something completely different (my payment was short one week and idk why) and i cannot get a human on the line for anything. tried calling at 8am, tried lunch, tried 3pm. always either busy signal or infinite hold. this system is so broken
0 coins
Ava Johnson
Short payments can sometimes be because of a certification issue or a partial week flagged in the system. Definitely worth talking to an agent. I know it sounds repetitive at this point but Claimyr (claimyr.com) was the only thing that actually got me through when I was trying to sort out a payment discrepancy. There's a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying.

ok fine i'll give it a shot because i have nothing to lose at this point. been trying the normal way for two weeks

payment discrepancies are frustrating bc they're usually something small that an agent can fix in like 5 minutes but you have to actually reach one first

My landlord asked me to provide proof of income and I showed them my EDD award letter. They accepted it but made a comment about it affecting my rental application. Does EDD benefit status affect rental applications in California?
0 coins
Sofia Perez
Rental applications are different from credit checks. A landlord can legally consider income source and amount when evaluating a tenant in California, but they cannot discriminate based on source of income in many California jurisdictions (source of income is a protected class in many CA cities). Your credit score itself won't be affected by EDD status - but a landlord's decision might consider your income level. Different issue than credit reporting.

Connor Byrne
To add to this - source of income protections vary by city in California. San Francisco, LA, and others have strong source of income protections. Smaller cities may not. Worth looking up your specific city's tenant protection laws.

been on california edd for about two months now. my credit score has actually improved since i filed lol. mostly because losing my job scared me straight and i stopped making impulse purchases and started paying down balances. silver lining i guess

Same thing happened to me. Nothing like unemployment to make you really think hard about every dollar. My credit score improved by like 40 points over 5 months because I finally got serious about my balances.

lol same. paid off my store credit card completely during unemployment bc i knew i couldn't afford any interest charges. score went up and i kept the card at zero after getting rehired

Just want to say thank you to everyone in this thread. I've been lurking since I filed my California EDD claim two weeks ago and this has answered so many questions I was embarrassed to ask. The credit score fear was so real for me and now I can actually relax about that part at least while I focus on finding new work and doing my weekly certifications properly.
0 coins
Liam O'Donnell
Good luck with your claim and job search! Just stay on top of your weekly certifications and document your job search activities carefully. The credit score piece is truly nothing to worry about - focus energy on the things you can control.

ElectricDreamer
Keep up with your job search requirements - California EDD requires three job search activities per week for most claimants. Keep a log of every application, contact, and activity even if EDD doesn't ask to see it immediately. If your claim ever goes to adjudication over job search requirements you'll want that documentation.
