Does California EDD actually check your job searches when you certify?
I've been on unemployment for about two months now and every time I certify for my weekly benefits I have to list my job search activities. I work in graphic design and got laid off from a mid-size agency back in March. I'm genuinely applying to places but I'm also a little paranoid - does California EDD actually verify or check your job search contacts? Like do they call the employers you listed or cross-reference anything? I've been keeping a spreadsheet of every application I submit with dates and everything but I'm not sure how thorough they actually audit this stuff. My friend told me they never check but another person in my old office said she got flagged and had to provide documentation. Would really appreciate if anyone who has dealt with this could share what actually happens.

Short answer: yes they can and sometimes do verify job search activities. California EDD conducts random audits where they'll request your job search records and may contact employers to confirm you actually applied. It's not every claimant every week but it's definitely not just an honor system either. Keep your documentation solid - dates, company names, contact info, position titles, how you applied. The fact that you're already keeping a spreadsheet puts you way ahead of most people.

AuthorThat's reassuring to hear I'm doing it right. Do you know roughly how often these audits happen? Like is it a small percentage of claimants or more common than that?

From what I've seen in my own experience they seem to target people whose claim patterns look unusual - like if you never seem to be getting any interviews or if your search activities all look identical week to week. Variety in your job search methods also matters.

yes they check!! my cousin got an audit letter last year and had to submit her job search log within 10 days or they were gonna stop her payments. she had kept decent records but it was still stressful scrambling to get everything organized. def don't mess around with this

AuthorOh wow that's kind of scary actually. Did she end up being okay? Did they actually contact the employers she listed?

yeah she was fine, they just wanted her written log. i dont think they called anyone but they definitely reviewed the records she submitted

I went through an audit last spring and it was honestly not as scary as I expected BUT only because I had good documentation. What I'll also say is that getting through to California EDD when you have questions about your job search requirements is genuinely painful. I spent three days trying to reach someone to ask a clarifying question about whether volunteer work counted toward my search activities. Eventually someone in my building told me about a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - and I finally got connected to an actual EDD rep within like an hour. They confirmed that volunteer work does count but you need to list it differently on your log. Absolutely worth it if you have specific questions about your situation.

AuthorWait so volunteer work actually counts? I didn't know that. And I've been trying to call EDD for a week now with no luck so I might look into that Claimyr thing.

Never heard of that service before but I've wasted literally entire mornings on hold with EDD so this sounds like it could be useful

does claimyr work for people who have issues with their job search being flagged specifically or just general questions? asking because mine got flagged last month

Here's what the actual California EDD requirements state: you need to make at least three job search contacts per week for most claimants (unless you have an approved variance or are in approved training). Each contact needs to include the employer name, address or website, the position you applied for, the date of contact, and the method of contact. What counts as a valid contact includes submitting applications online, in person applications, contacting employers directly about openings, employment agency contacts, and some other approved activities. What does NOT count: applying to the same employer more than once in the same benefit year unless it's for a genuinely different position, browsing job boards without applying, or attending general job fairs without making specific employer contacts.

AuthorThis is super helpful, thank you. So just clicking through Indeed listings doesn't count, you have to actually submit an application? That makes sense.

wait so if I applied to the same company twice for two different jobs that's okay? I did that last month and wasn't sure if it would cause issues

Nina Fitzgerald
@above - yes, different positions at the same employer within the same benefit year is fine. What's not allowed is applying for the exact same position at the same company repeatedly just to pad your numbers.

also just want to add that networking contacts can count too - like reaching out to someone in your industry to ask about openings counts as a job search contact as long as you document it properly

I got audited twice during my last unemployment claim period and both times they did NOT contact the employers. They just asked me to mail in my written log. But I've heard from others that in some cases they do make employer contact verification calls so it really seems inconsistent. Probably depends on the auditor assigned to your case honestly.

AuthorThat inconsistency is kind of stressful to hear about. At least if it were consistent you'd know what to prepare for.

Yeah it's one of those California EDD things where the rules are technically clear but the enforcement feels random. Best protection is always to have thorough documentation.

BEEN THROUGH THIS. Let me tell you they absolutely check and mine got flagged because I used the exact same description for my job search contacts three weeks in a row. Like word for word. EDD sent me a letter saying my search activities appeared repetitive and not genuine and I had to appeal it. Took forever to resolve and my payments were held for almost three weeks while they reviewed everything. DO NOT use a template and just change the company name. Write genuinely different descriptions each time.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorOh no, that sounds awful. Did you eventually get your payments released? And did you have to actually appeal formally or did they just review and reinstate?
0 coins
Savannah Vin
They reinstated after I submitted a bunch of documentation showing I actually did apply to all those places - had confirmation emails from like 8 of the employers. It wasn't a formal appeal hearing but I had to write a whole explanation letter. Was super stressful.

this is really important advice, the repetitive description thing is something a lot of people don't realize can get flagged

Something that helped me was treating my job search log like a professional document rather than just a form to fill out. I included follow-up contacts, noted when I didn't hear back within two weeks and reached out again, listed informational interviews - basically showed an active genuine search. Never got audited in 7 months of collecting UI but I think the quality of the documentation gives you protection even if you do.

Hunter Brighton
AuthorThat's a really smart approach. I might add a notes column to my spreadsheet for follow-up actions.

Following up on applications you listed is genuinely good both for actually finding a job AND for your EDD documentation. Win-win approach.

ok but real talk does anyone know if edd actually has the staff capacity to verify all these job searches?? there are hundreds of thousands of people on ui at any given time in california. i feel like the checks are mostly automated pattern detection and human review only kicks in when something looks weird
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
You're probably right about this. Most compliance is likely algorithmic pattern detection with human review triggered by anomalies. But that's exactly why repetitive or templated entries get flagged - the algorithm catches patterns that look non-genuine.

Savannah Vin
Doesn't matter if the odds are low honestly. The consequences of getting flagged are severe enough that it's not worth cutting corners. Three weeks without payments when you're unemployed is devastating.

I got a job search audit letter last fall and I was PANICKING because my records weren't great. I managed to get through to a California EDD rep after trying Claimyr (claimyr.com has a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10) and the agent actually walked me through exactly what documentation they needed and what format to submit it in. That conversation probably saved my claim because I knew exactly what to provide. Without that I would have just sent random stuff and hoped for the best.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorThis is really helpful to know about. So the rep can actually advise you on what to submit during an audit review? That's way more useful than I expected.
0 coins
Kylo Ren
Yes! They can't tell you what to write obviously but they can clarify what specific documentation they're looking for and the submission deadline. That alone was huge for me.

Same experience here - the EDD agents are actually way more helpful than people expect when you finally do get through to one. The problem is just getting to that point.

For what it's worth the job search requirement can be waived in certain situations - if your employer has given you a return to work date within 60 days you can request standby status and the three contacts per week requirement is reduced significantly. Also if you're in approved training through California EDD you may not need to complete the full search requirement. Just mentioning in case anyone reading this is in one of those situations.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorI'm not in either of those situations but good to know for others. My layoff was pretty permanent unfortunately.
0 coins
Jason Brewer
wait what is standby status exactly? i thought you had to actively look for work no matter what
0 coins
Paige Cantoni
Standby is when your employer expects to rehire you within 60 days - like a seasonal layoff or temporary shutdown. You still have to be able and available for work but the job search contacts requirement is reduced. You have to actually request and be approved for standby though, it's not automatic.

My sister works in HR and she said she has gotten verification calls from EDD before asking if someone really applied there. So yes they do make employer calls at least sometimes. She said the calls are brief and they just confirm whether an application was received for the position on the date listed.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorInteresting, so they do actually call employers at least in some cases. That confirms I should make sure every application I list was a real genuine application and not just a tentative click.

This is the kind of real-world confirmation that matters. Official EDD documentation won't tell you exactly how verification works operationally.

i'm so stressed reading this thread because i've been doing my job searches but my documentation is really loose. like i have the names and dates but not always the exact position title or the specific contact method. is that going to be a problem if i get audited?
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
Position title and method of contact are both required fields on the job search record. Going forward make sure you capture those for every contact. For past weeks, go back to your email and browser history and try to reconstruct the details as accurately as possible. It's not ideal but documented records are better than incomplete ones.

omg okay i'm going to spend this weekend going through my email to fill in the gaps. thank you

Dylan Baskin
Your confirmation emails from employers when you apply online will have the exact position title and the date - that's actually the most reliable source. LinkedIn also keeps application history if you used that.

Mason Stone
The thing that gets people isn't usually complete fraud, it's sloppiness. Applying then forgetting to record it properly. Or using vague employer info that can't be verified. California EDD doesn't necessarily assume you're lying but if they can't verify something it creates a problem. Specificity protects you - full company name, real address or full URL of the job posting, exact position title, and specific date not just a week approximation.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorThis is practical advice. I've been saving the actual job posting URLs in my spreadsheet which I think is a good move.
0 coins
Mason Stone
Saving posting URLs is great. Even if the posting comes down later you have evidence you saw a real listing for a real position at a real company on a real date.

slightly off topic but how long does california edd actually hold your payments when your job search is being reviewed? my neighbor went through this and she said it was like 6 weeks before anything got resolved. that sounds extreme
0 coins
Savannah Vin
Mine was 3 weeks. I think 6 weeks is on the longer end but not impossible especially if they need you to submit documentation and then review it. The review timeline after you submit documentation can be another 2-4 weeks on top of any time you took to respond.
0 coins
Kylo Ren
This is exactly why it matters to respond to any audit letter IMMEDIATELY and as thoroughly as possible. Every day of delay on your end extends the timeline.
0 coins
Kiara Fisherman
yeah my neighbor was slow to respond because she was panicking and didn't understand the letter. so the delay was partly on her end. stressful situation

has anyone had experience with edd auditing job searches for people who work in creative fields like design or writing? i feel like my applications look different than a standard office job because i'm often sending portfolio links and doing project-based outreach rather than filling out traditional application forms
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorOh this is relevant to my situation too since I'm in graphic design! I've been wondering the same thing.

Lauren Wood
Portfolio submissions and project inquiries absolutely count as job search contacts as long as you can document them. An email to a creative director asking about freelance or full-time design work is a legitimate contact. Just make sure you document the person's name, company, the date, and that you were specifically inquiring about employment.
0 coins
Emma Olsen
okay that makes sense. i've been saving all my outreach emails so i should be covered, i just wasn't sure if it looked too informal compared to submitting through a job board

I want to throw in that the stress of potentially being audited almost made me stop claiming benefits I was legitimately entitled to. Don't let fear push you away from benefits you earned. The audit process exists to catch actual fraud, not to penalize people who are genuinely searching. If you're doing real searches and keeping decent records you'll be fine. The horror stories are mostly from people who genuinely weren't doing the required activities or had really poor documentation.

Hunter Brighton
AuthorThis is actually really reassuring perspective. Thank you. I think I needed to hear this because I've been spinning out a little.

Totally understandable to be anxious about it. The California EDD system can feel really adversarial even when you're doing everything right. But genuine claimants who document properly have very little to worry about.

update for anyone following this thread - I went through an audit two months ago that I mentioned in another post. I used Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent at claimyr.com before I responded to the audit letter so I could understand exactly what they wanted. Agent confirmed they needed my full job search log for the 8-week period in question plus any supporting documentation I had. I submitted everything via fax (their preferred method apparently) and my claim was fully reinstated within 11 days. The key was knowing exactly what to submit before I sent anything.

Hunter Brighton
Author11 days for reinstatement is actually much faster than what some other people in this thread experienced. I'm filing this away in case I ever need it.

one thing nobody mentioned - if you're applying through sites like LinkedIn Easy Apply or Indeed Quick Apply make sure you have some record that you actually hit submit and not just saved the job. I know people who saved dozens of jobs thinking they applied and then had issues because they only saved listings. The confirmation email or the application status showing in your account history is your proof.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorOh this is a really important distinction. I always make sure I get to the confirmation screen but now I'm going to start taking screenshots too just in case.

Jason Brewer
wait i might have done this with indeed. going to check my applications vs saved jobs right now

Yeah check the difference between 'Applied' and 'Saved' in your Indeed account - completely different sections. Applications will show a confirmation status, saved jobs are just bookmarks.

California EDD does share data with employers and other state agencies too, which is part of how they can verify certain things without making individual calls to every employer on your list. If you claimed you worked somewhere when you didn't, or say you applied somewhere when you didn't, there are ways those inconsistencies can surface. Not trying to scare anyone doing legitimate searches but it's worth knowing the system has more verification capability than just calling each employer individually.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
AuthorThat actually makes the whole system make more sense - it's not all manual verification, there are data checks too. Good to understand how it works.
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
This is accurate - cross-matching with employer payroll records and state wage data is one of the primary ways California EDD catches inconsistencies. For job search verification specifically it's more about the documentation audit process but yes the system has multiple verification layers.
0 coins
Anita George
Exactly. The technology-based cross-matching is primarily for earnings verification but the overall point is the system isn't just relying on one manual verification method for anything.
