Can I get EDD unemployment after SDI if work won't put me back on schedule?
Hey everyone, I just finished my medical leave and I'm in a weird situation. My work hasn't put me back on the schedule yet, and I'm wondering if I can get unemployment until I'm working again. Has anyone been through this? How do I even start applying? The EDD website is confusing af and I can't figure out if I qualify or not. Any advice would be appreciated!

I've been there before! It's a tricky situation. First things first, you need to make sure you're actually eligible. Have you tried contacting your employer to see what's up with your reinstatement?

Yeah, I reached out to HR but they're being super vague. Just keep saying they'll 'get back to me'. It's been weeks now 🙄

Ugh, that sucks. Sounds like you might have a case for unemployment then. Document everything!

This happened to my cousin last year. He ended up qualifying for unemployment cuz his job was dragging their feet. Def worth applying!

Okay, so here's the deal with unemployment after medical leave: 1. You need to be able and available to work 2. You can't be receiving any other benefits (like SDI) 3. You must have earned enough wages during your base period 4. Your unemployment must be through no fault of your own Sounds like you might qualify if your employer isn't bringing you back. Here's what you should do: - Document all communication with your employer - File your claim online at edd.ca.gov - Be honest about your situation in the application - If denied, appeal! Many people win on appeal Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for breaking it down like this! This is super helpful. I'm definitely gonna start the application process asap.

This is great advice. I'd add: make sure you're very clear about your last day of work vs. last day of medical leave. EDD can be picky about dates.

Seriously, their phone system is a joke. I swear they designed it to make people give up.

Pro tip: call right when they open. Like, set an alarm and everything. Sometimes you can get through that way.

Hey, I found a method to get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Nah, it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

How long did you have to wait after using the service?

It took about an hour, but I didn't have to do anything. The service called me when an agent was on the line.

idk man, the whole system is rigged. I applied 3 months ago and still haven't seen a dime. This state is a joke 🤮

Have you considered looking for temp work while this gets sorted out? Might be a good stopgap solution.

That's not a bad idea actually. Any recommendations for temp agencies?

Robert Half and Kelly Services are pretty solid. Also check out Indeed for short-term gigs.

Just a heads up, make sure you're super careful filling out the application. One tiny mistake and they'll delay everything for weeks. Ask me how I know ðŸ˜

I put the wrong end date for my last job by ONE DAY. Took forever to get it fixed. Triple check everything!
