Can I get EDD benefits with 50% reduced work hours? Manager cut my schedule in half
My retail manager just told me they're cutting my hours from 40 to 20 per week starting next month due to 'slow season'. This is basically slashing my income in half and I can't cover my rent on 20 hours! Can I file for partial unemployment with EDD when my hours get reduced? Has anyone successfully collected benefits for reduced hours rather than a complete layoff? I'm worried they'll deny me since I'm still technically employed. My coworker said I should just quit and get full benefits, but that seems risky. Really stressed about this - any advice appreciated!

•Thanks for the quick reply! Do you remember if your weekly benefit amount was a lot less than regular unemployment? And did you have to do the same work search requirements?

Yes, you absolutely qualify for partial unemployment when your hours are reduced by 50%. That's a substantial reduction and meets EDD criteria. Here's what you need to know: 1. File your UI claim just like regular unemployment 2. When certifying every two weeks, accurately report your work hours and earnings 3. EDD will calculate your partial benefit using their formula (typically your weekly benefit minus 75% of your earnings) 4. You still need to meet all work search requirements 5. Document the reduction in writing from your employer if possible Don't quit your job - that could make you ineligible. A 50% reduction is considered good cause for filing.

•But what about the "look for work" requirement?? I thought you had to be completely unemployed to qualify for EDD! The website is SO confusing about this!

•You still need to meet work search requirements even with partial unemployment. This means actively looking for additional work or a full-time position while receiving partial benefits. EDD usually requires you to document at least 3 work search activities per week.

I was in the same boat last year! Went from 38 hrs to 15 hrs at my warehouse job. I filed for UI and got partial benefits - not as much as full unemployment but it helped a lot. Just remember you still have to be available for full-time work.

The EDD SYSTEM IS RIGGED against retail workers!! I tried getting partial unemployment when my hours were cut and they made me wait 8 WEEKS before getting ANY money!! They kept asking for "additional information" and "verification" even though I uploaded EVERYTHING they asked for!!! Then they only backdated HALF of what I was owed!!! The system is DESIGNED to make you give up!!!

•I understand your frustration, but partial UI claims can actually be processed fairly quickly if you have all documentation ready. If your employer confirms your reduction in hours, there shouldn't be an 8-week wait. Did you try calling EDD to speak with a representative about the delay?

•Hey, if you're still having trouble reaching EDD by phone, try Claimyr (claimyr.com). It helped me get through to a rep when my claim was stuck for weeks. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Saved me hours of redial frustration when I had a similar issue with my reduced hours claim.

Update: I filed my claim yesterday after getting some kind of letter from my manager confirming the hours reduction. The online application was confusing - it kept asking if I was "laid off" but I selected "still working with reduced hours" option. Fingers crossed it goes through! Thanks for all the advice everyone.

•Smart move getting that letter from your manager! That'll help if they have questions about your claim.

One important thing to remember with partial unemployment: when you certify every two weeks, you must report your gross earnings (before taxes) for the week you earned them, not when you get paid. Many claimants make this mistake and end up with overpayment notices. Also, if your hours fluctuate week to week, you may receive different benefit amounts each certification period. Some weeks you might not receive any benefits if you earn too much, but you'll still remain on an active claim as long as you continue certifying.

•Thanks for explaining this! Our pay periods are weird (Wednesday-Tuesday) so I'll make sure to report by EDD's Sunday-Saturday schedule. Does EDD have some income threshold where they cut off benefits completely?

•Yes, if your weekly earnings exceed your weekly benefit amount (WBA), you won't receive benefits for that week. For example, if your WBA is $350 and you earn $400 in a week, you won't receive benefits that week. But always certify regardless - maintaining your active claim is important in case your hours drop further.

wait im confused...do u have to quit to get unemployment or not?? my boss cut my hours too (from 35 to 22) but im scared to apply cuz what if they say im committing fraud or something?? everyone tells me different things!!

•No, you absolutely do NOT need to quit to get unemployment benefits. In fact, quitting voluntarily could disqualify you. When your hours are substantially reduced (like yours - from 35 to 22), you can qualify for partial unemployment benefits while continuing to work those reduced hours. This is perfectly legitimate and not fraudulent at all.

Second update: My claim went through! I got a message in my UI Online inbox saying my weekly benefit amount is $267. I just did my first certification and reported the 20 hours I worked. The calculator said I'll receive a partial payment of $164 for the week. Not as much as I hoped but definitely helps with the reduced income. Thanks again everyone!
