Need to extend PFL by just ONE day - already received payment through original end date

Ugh, I think I messed up my PFL claim dates and now I'm in a weird situation. I decided to only use part of my eligible baby bonding time (saving some for later this year), but I accidentally ended my claim one day too early. So now there's this random Thursday where I'm not getting paid by my employer OR by EDD. Has anyone dealt with this? Can I somehow file for just ONE more day of PFL benefits after already receiving payment through my original end date? I've already gotten about $1,640 for the period I claimed, but now I'm stressing about this one unpaid day. Is it even worth trying to fix?

Thanks for responding! Did you have to submit any paperwork for the continued claim? Or was it all handled over the phone?

Yes, you can absolutely extend your claim by one day. You need to file what's called a "Continued Claim Certification" for that additional day. Since you've already received payment through your original end date, you'll need to specifically request this extension. Call the EDD PFL division at 1-877-238-4373 and explain the situation. Make sure you have your claim ID ready. They'll either handle it by phone or send you a supplemental form to complete. For baby bonding PFL, you can split your 8 weeks however you want within the 12-month period after birth/adoption, so this one-day extension shouldn't be a problem as long as you're still within your eligibility window. The key is getting through to an actual representative who can make the adjustment in their system.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! I've been trying to call that number for two days but keep getting disconnected after waiting on hold forever. Is there a better time of day to call?

Ugh I HATE the EDD phone system!!! I had almost exactly the same issue with my maternity leave last month, except I accidentally overlapped my SDI and PFL by 2 days. I spent LITERALLY 4 hours on hold over 3 different days and just kept getting disconnected or told to call back later. The system is completely broken and they don't care at all about new parents who are just trying to feed their families. And of course there's no way to fix anything online - everything has to be by phone. I eventually gave up on getting those 2 days fixed because it wasn't worth the stress with a newborn.

Seriously! The EDD website makes it seem like everything can be handled online, but the second anything is slightly complicated, they force you to call. I got so frustrated trying to reach them when I needed to extend my claim that I almost gave up too.

I found a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes after I'd spent days trying on my own. Totally worth it when I needed to fix my baby bonding dates. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Their website is claimyr.com - they basically call EDD for you and then connect you once they reach an agent. I was super skeptical but it actually worked when I needed to adjust the end date of my claim. The woman I spoke with at EDD was able to add the additional days I needed.

Oh wow, I've never heard of this! That sounds so much better than what I've been doing. I'll check out the video. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything to get this resolved.

To clarify some misinformation in this thread: What you need to do is file a PFL Supplemental Claim (DE 2525XX) for the additional day. This form allows you to request benefits for days not included in your initial claim. Important details: 1. The supplemental day must still fall within your 12-month eligibility window 2. You must still have available benefits remaining from your 8-week total 3. There's no waiting period for supplemental claims The fastest way to resolve this is indeed by phone, but you can also download the form from the EDD website, complete it, and mail it in. Just be aware that mail processing takes 10-14 business days versus a same-day resolution by phone. For future reference, always double-check your dates before submitting. The EDD system is designed with full weeks in mind, so odd single days can create these gaps.

Is that form different from the regular PFL form (DE 2501F)? My husband had similar issue last yr but he just filled out another regular PFL form for the extra days and it worked fine

Update: I finally got through to EDD! For anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation, here's what happened: 1. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and got connected to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes (which felt like a miracle after days of trying) 2. The agent explained I needed to file a supplemental claim for the missing day 3. She was able to process it right there on the phone - I didn't need to mail anything! 4. She said the payment for the one day should come through within 7-10 business days The agent also mentioned this happens fairly often with baby bonding claims since people often split their time. Thank you all for your help!

That's great news! Glad you got it resolved. Always smart to hang onto some of your baby bonding time for later in the year too - that flexibility is one of the best parts of California's PFL program.

So glad you got this sorted out! I'm actually in a similar boat - planning to use only part of my PFL for baby bonding now and save the rest for later. Your post made me double-check my dates and I realized I almost made the same mistake. Thanks for sharing the Claimyr tip too - definitely bookmarking that for future reference. The whole EDD phone system is such a nightmare, it's good to know there are workarounds that actually work!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm currently on PFL for baby bonding and was thinking about doing exactly what you did - using only part of my time now and saving some for later. Your experience is a great reminder to be extra careful with the dates. Quick question for anyone who's done this split approach: when you go to file for the remaining weeks later in the year, do you need to submit a completely new claim or is there a way to reactivate the existing one? I want to make sure I don't run into any issues when I'm ready to take the rest of my time.

Great question! From what I understand, you'll need to file a new PFL claim when you're ready to use the remaining weeks later in the year. The original claim closes once you've used up the time you initially requested, so there's no way to "reactivate" it. Just make sure you're still within your 12-month eligibility window from your baby's birth/adoption date when you file the second claim. I'd recommend calling EDD ahead of time to confirm you have the remaining weeks available before you actually need to take the time off - that way you can avoid any surprises!

This whole thread is so reassuring! I'm expecting my first baby in a couple months and have been trying to figure out the best way to split my PFL time. My plan was to take 4 weeks initially and save the other 4 weeks for when my partner goes back to work, but I've been super anxious about messing up the paperwork. Reading about everyone's experiences (especially the success stories!) makes me feel more confident. Definitely going to bookmark that Claimyr service just in case I run into phone issues. Thanks everyone for sharing your real-world experiences - way more helpful than trying to decipher the EDD website!
