EDD PFL after pregnancy disability - when will payments start and will benefit amount stay the same?

I just finished my pregnancy disability benefits last Friday and submitted my PFL application for baby bonding on Monday. I'm trying to budget and figure out when I'll see my first PFL payment hit my account. A few questions: 1) Is there any waiting period between pregnancy disability and PFL baby bonding? My HR dept said there isn't but I've heard mixed things 2) Will my weekly benefit amount be exactly the same as what I was getting on disability? I was receiving $1,250/week for disability. 3) How long typically between PFL application and first payment if I submitted everything correctly? I'm nervous about a gap in income since rent is due soon. Thanks for any help!!

There's no waiting period when transitioning from pregnancy disability to PFL baby bonding - that's correct! As long as you filed your PFL claim right after your disability ended (which it sounds like you did), there shouldn't be a gap in payments. Your benefit amount will be calculated the same way, so it should be identical to what you received during disability ($1,250/week). The system uses the same base period wage calculation for both. As for timing, if everything was submitted correctly, you should see your first payment within 7-10 days of application submission. If you submitted Monday, watch for payment early next week.

Thank you so much! That's a big relief. I submitted Monday so fingers crossed for early next week then!

Oh no - 2 weeks?? That's longer than I hoped. Was there anything that might have delayed yours? I'm hoping since I applied right away it might be faster.

i don't think anything specific delayed mine, the EDD is just slow sometimes! but maybe you'll get lucky!

DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING when it comes to EDD!!! My transition from disability to PFL was a NIGHTMARE in 2024. Even though there's "no waiting period" I went FIVE WEEKS without payment because my claim got "stuck in processing" with no explanation. My benefit amount was the same ($1100/week) but what good is that when you're not getting paid?? Call them IMMEDIATELY if you don't see a payment in your account within 10 days. Don't wait like I did thinking "it's processing" because they might have "lost" your paperwork or need additional verification they never told you about!!

This happened to me too. Had to call over 50 times to reach someone. When I finally got through, they said my doctor hadn't completed part of the form correctly, but nobody bothered to notify me! So frustrating.

I had the exact same questions when transitioning from pregnancy disability to PFL baby bonding last month! Here's what happened in my case: - Filed PFL claim same day my disability ended - First PFL payment arrived 8 days after filing - Benefit amount was identical to disability ($1,325/week) - No waiting period was applied One tip: make sure you actually filed a new claim for PFL, not just a continued certification for disability. Some people get confused and just keep certifying for disability, which will cause processing delays. Also, double-check that your doctor completed the bonding certification correctly. They need to verify the child's birth date and your relationship. Good luck and congrats on your new baby!

Thank you! Yes, I definitely filed a new claim specifically for PFL bonding using the DE2501F form. My doctor completed the medical portion right after birth, so hopefully everything is in order. I'm just anxious about any payment gaps since I'm the primary income right now.

After struggling for 3 days trying to reach EDD about my PFL transition issues (kept getting disconnected or 2+ hour wait times), I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in less than 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The EDD agent told me my PFL claim was actually pending because of a name mismatch between my disability claim and PFL application (I used my married name on one form and maiden name on another). Would have never known without calling! Got it fixed and payment came three days later.

I've never heard of that service before. Does it really work? I might need it if my payment doesn't show up next week.

It worked for me! Totally worth it to not spend hours trying to get through. The EDD phone system is seriously the worst.

One important thing to check - make sure your EDD Online account shows that your claim status has changed from Disability to PFL. Mine got stuck in some weird limbo where it showed I was still on disability even though I'd applied for PFL. And yes, your benefit amount should be identical since they use the same base period wages for both calculations. I received $1,428/week for both disability and PFL in 2025. If everything is in order, you should see payment within 7-10 days. If it goes beyond that, definitely call. The standard is that there's no waiting period between the two benefits, but processing delays can happen.

Wait, are disability and PFL benefits actually the same amount? I thought PFL was only 60% of your wages while disability was 70%? That's what my HR told me when I was planning my leave...

Your HR is outdated! The rates were equalized in 2018. Both SDI and PFL are calculated the same way now (approximately 60-70% of wages depending on your income level). They use the same base period and same calculation method.

I just went through this exact transition in February! Filed my PFL application the day after my disability ended and got my first payment 6 days later - so definitely watch for it early next week like Sebastian mentioned. Your $1,250/week should stay exactly the same since they use identical calculation methods now. The key is making sure you filed the DE2501F form (not just continuing to certify for disability) and that all your doctor's paperwork was completed correctly. One thing that helped me was checking my EDD Online account daily to make sure the claim status actually switched from "Disability" to "Paid Family Leave." If it still shows disability after a few days, that could indicate a processing issue. Also keep all your confirmation numbers and screenshots - if there are any delays, having that documentation makes it much easier when you call EDD. Congrats on your new baby and good luck!
