Need to report return to work to EDD SDI online - can't get through by phone

Hey everyone, I'm finally cleared to go back to work next Monday after being on disability for 6 weeks (herniated disc). I know I need to let EDD know I'm returning to work so my benefits stop correctly, but I can't figure out how to do this online through SDI Online. Every time I try calling, I just get the automated message saying 'due to high call volume, we can't take your call right now' and it hangs up. I've tried calling at different times for THREE DAYS with no luck! I really don't want to get overpaid and then have to deal with repaying money. Is there a way to report return to work date through the SDI Online portal that I'm missing? Or is calling really the only way? If so, any tips on actually getting through to a human?

Unfortunately, there's no way to report your return to work date through SDI Online. You have to call them directly. When your doctor submitted your final certification with a projected return-to-work date, that's what EDD is using to calculate your benefit end date. If you're returning earlier than what your doctor certified, you definitely need to let them know to avoid overpayment. Try calling RIGHT when they open at 8:00 am. Don't even wait until 8:01. I've had the best luck getting through first thing in the morning.

Thanks for confirming. My doctor actually put 'unknown' for return to work date since we weren't sure how long recovery would take, so I definitely need to update them. I'll try right at 8am tomorrow!

Lol good luck with that! Tryed calling for 3 weeks about my pregnancy disability claim and gave up. EDD is a mess

Ugh, that's discouraging. Did you ever get your issue resolved?

I've been in your exact situation before. Here's what worked for me - download this app called Claimyr. I was skeptical at first, but it actually worked to get me connected with an EDD representative when I needed to adjust my return to work date. They basically keep dialing for you so you don't have to keep calling back yourself. There's a video demo here that explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. After days of trying to call myself, I got through in about 25 minutes using their service. Much better than the alternative of getting overpaid and dealing with that whole mess!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check out that video. Did you have any issues with giving them your information? I'm always wary of third-party services.

I was concerned about that too, but it worked fine for me. They just need your number to connect the call. They don't ask for any personal EDD info or SSN or anything like that. The EDD rep won't even know you used a service to get through.

Everyone is telling u to call but NOBODY is mentioning you can also send a secure message through your SDI Online account!!!! Go to 'Contact EDD' in your SDI Online account and send them a message stating your claim number and return to work date. MAKE SURE to keep a screenshot of the message as proof you notified them in case they mess up and there's an overpayment later. They usually respond in about a week confirming they got it.

This doesn't actually work. I tried the message thing before and they never processed it. They responded 3 WEEKS LATER just telling me to call. By then I had already been overpaid. Had to deal with the whole repayment process. 0/10 do not recommend.

As a heads up, if you do get overpaid, it's not the end of the world. I had this happen when I returned to work 2 weeks earlier than planned. I couldn't get through on the phone either, got overpaid for those 2 weeks, then received a Notice of Overpayment in the mail about a month later. They give you payment options and you can even request a waiver if it causes financial hardship. Just keep documentation of your attempts to notify them about your return-to-work date. But yeah, calling is really the only official way to notify them about your early return to work. The secure message method some have mentioned isn't reliable for time-sensitive updates.

Good to know it's not completely disastrous if I do get overpaid. I really want to avoid it though - more hassle I don't need!

i had the same issue trying to reach them. ended up taking me like 37 calls spread over 2 days but finally got thru around 3pm on a tuesday. just keep trying different times. super annoying but eventually you'll get lucky

One more thing to remember - when you do get through to SDI, make sure they give you a confirmation number for your report of returning to work. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. This is your proof that you notified them, which is important if there are any issues later. They should provide this automatically, but if they don't, be sure to ask for it.

That's really helpful advice - I wouldn't have thought to ask for a confirmation number. Will definitely do this when I get through.

Update: I was able to get through to EDD this morning! I used the Claimyr service that someone recommended here and got connected to a representative after about 30 minutes. They updated my return to work date in the system and gave me a confirmation number like someone suggested. Thanks everyone for your help!

Congratulations on getting through and handling this properly! For anyone else reading this thread in the future - Sofia's experience shows that persistence pays off. The key takeaways seem to be: 1) Call right at 8am when they open, 2) Consider using services like Claimyr if regular calling isn't working, 3) Always get a confirmation number when you report changes, and 4) Keep documentation of your attempts to contact them. It's frustrating that there's no online option for something this basic, but at least there are ways to get through eventually.

This is such a helpful summary! I'm new to this community and dealing with SDI for the first time. It's really reassuring to see how supportive everyone is here and how you all helped Sofia work through this issue. The step-by-step breakdown will definitely be useful if I run into similar problems. Thanks for taking the time to put this all together!
