EDD SDI online account showing driver's license error - need alternate phone numbers to complete wrist injury claim

I broke my wrist in a stupid rock climbing accident two weeks ago (surgeon says 8-10 weeks recovery!) and I'm trying to file a disability claim. The problem I'm running into is that when I try to submit my claim through SDI Online, I keep getting an error message saying my driver's license is already in the system and that I need to call EDD. I have an old account from 2020 when I was on unemployment, so I'm guessing that's causing the conflict. I've been trying the main number (800-480-3287) for THREE DAYS and can't get through - either constant busy signal or it disconnects me after 20 minutes on hold. I'm starting to panic because I've already been without income for 2 weeks and rent is coming up fast. Does anyone know if there are other direct numbers I could try to reach an actual human at EDD? Maybe department-specific numbers or regional offices? I've searched online but finding conflicting information. At this point I'll try ANYTHING to get my claim moving forward. Thanks in advance!

havd u tried calling right when they opn at 8am?? that workes for me last month when i had to fix my pregnancy disability claim. the regular # worked but only if i called literally at 8:00 on the dot

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried that yesterday and today - both times I got through to the automated system but then got disconnected when it tried to transfer me to a rep. So frustrating!

You're running into the identity verification issue that happens when you've previously used a different program. There's actually a separate technical support line for SDI Online account issues: (855) 342-3645. That team should be able to reconcile your DL number between the two systems. Also, make sure you're using the SDI number directly, not the general UI number. The direct line is (800) 480-3287. If you're still having trouble after trying those, you might need to go through your local office. What county are you in? I might be able to suggest a local office number.

OMG thank you! I'll try the tech support line first thing tomorrow. I'm in San Diego County - if that doesn't work, I'd absolutely appreciate a local office number.

San Diego County EDD office is at (619) 525-4995, though they're notoriously difficult to reach as well. If tech support can't help, another option is to see if your doctor's office has a disability coordinator who might have direct contacts.

I went through something EXACTLY like this last year!!!!! The online system is GARBAGE and wouldn't let me complete my claim because of my "existing account information" even though I hadn't filed anything for years!!!! I ended up spending WEEKS trying to get someone on the phone. Complete disaster. My doctor's office was pressuring me to get it done and I almost had a breakdown dealing with it all while trying to recover from surgery.

This is why I always recommend people file disability claims BEFORE surgery if it's planned. The system is so broken and understaffed now its ridiculous.

100% agree! If I'd known how bad it would be I would have started the process way earlier. Now I tell everyone I know to file like 2 weeks before any planned medical leave!

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to EDD? I was in a similar situation with my disability claim getting stuck due to identity verification issues. After three weeks of trying to call with no luck, I used Claimyr.com and they got me connected to an EDD representative in about 23 minutes. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It was the only thing that worked for me when my disability claim was stuck in limbo with that same driver's license error. The rep was able to manually reconcile my accounts and pushed my claim through that same day.

I've never heard of this service! Just watched the video and it seems like exactly what I need right now. At this point I'd try anything to get this resolved. I'll give it a shot tomorrow if the tech support number doesn't work out. Thanks!

Be careful with services like that. They can't do anything you can't do yourself, they just have technology to keep calling. But good luck whatever you try, the EDD system is a nightmare right now.

The driver's license conflict is a common issue that happens between UI and SDI systems since they're technically separate databases. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the SDI technical support line specifically: (855) 342-3645 2. Explain that you're having an identity verification conflict between your old UI account and your new SDI claim 3. Have your driver's license, SSN, and existing EDD Customer Account Number ready 4. Ask them to merge your identity verification information Once they fix that, you should be able to complete your claim online. If for some reason you still can't get through on that number, as a last resort you can also try submitting a paper claim form (DE 2501) which bypasses the online system entirely. You can download it from the EDD website or get one from your doctor. Hope that helps with your wrist recovery! Make sure you're getting your doctor to properly certify your expected recovery timeline.

Thank you so much for these detailed steps! I didn't realize I could submit a paper form as a backup option - that's really good to know. My doctor estimated 8-10 weeks but said it could be longer if I need physical therapy afterward, so I'll make sure that's all documented correctly.

you dont even need to call EDD for this. just make a new account with a different email. thats what i did when i got locked out and couldnt get through on the phone. just use your same SSN but different email and it works fine. got my disablity money for my back injury in like 10 days.

This is actually incorrect advice and could cause more problems. Creating multiple accounts with the same SSN can trigger fraud alerts in the EDD system and potentially delay your claim even further. The driver's license conflict specifically needs to be resolved by EDD staff.

worked for me tho 🤷‍♂️ just saying

My sister works for EDD (not disability dept though) and she says internal memos went out about staffing shortages in the disability claims department. They're apparently 3-4 weeks behind on processing claims with account issues. The system flags driver's license conflicts as potential identity theft, which is why they make you call in. Not helpful for your immediate situation but thought you should know what you're dealing with.

That's actually really helpful context, thanks. At least I know it's not just me doing something wrong. Does your sister happen to know if using the tech support number that others suggested is actually faster than the main line?

She said tech support is definitely faster for account issues specifically, but they can't help with claim decisions or payment info. They can just fix the account merge issue to let you complete your application.

Were you able to get this resolved? I'm dealing with the exact same issue with my disability claim right now. Apparently this became a common problem after they switched systems in January, especially for people who had UI claims during Covid. Please update if you found a solution!

Yes! Finally got it fixed yesterday. The tech support number others suggested didn't work (constant busy signal), but I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to a real person in about 30 minutes. The rep fixed the driver's license conflict and I was able to complete my claim right after. Good luck with yours!

I'm dealing with a similar issue right now! My disability claim got stuck because of an old unemployment account from 2019. I tried the tech support line (855) 342-3645 that others mentioned and actually got through after about 45 minutes on hold yesterday morning. The rep was really helpful and explained that this is happening to tons of people since they updated their systems. She was able to merge my account info in about 10 minutes and I was able to submit my claim online right after the call. Definitely try calling that tech support number first thing in the morning - seems like that's when you have the best chance of getting through. Hope your wrist heals quickly!

That's so encouraging to hear! I'm actually dealing with this exact same issue right now - filed for disability after a knee surgery and can't get past the driver's license error. I've been calling the main number for days with no luck. Going to try the tech support line you mentioned first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for sharing that it actually worked for you! Did they say anything about how long it takes for the claim to process once the account issue is fixed?
