EDD SDI extension panic - benefits running out before doctor releases me to work
I'm seriously freaking out about my SDI benefits. I've been on temporary disability for complications after surgery since February, and I only have payments scheduled for 2 more weeks. But my doctor just told me I can't return to work until at least May 30th (possibly longer depending on my next follow-up)! My bank account is about to hit zero after my next rent payment. I thought disability lasted as long as the doctor kept you off work? Do I need to file for an extension? My claim shows an 'expected return to work' date that's two weeks from now, but my doctor is saying that's not happening. What paperwork do I need to file? Is there a gap between regular benefits and extension benefits? I can't afford to miss even one week of payments.

You need to have your doctor submit an updated medical certification form (DE 2501) to extend your disability period. This happens all the time! The key is to get it submitted BEFORE your current claim period ends. Call your doctor's office ASAP and explain the situation - tell them you need the extension paperwork filed this week. EDD won't automatically extend your claim without the updated medical certification showing the new expected return-to-work date.

•Thank you! I'll call my doctor first thing tomorrow. Do you know if there's typically a delay between when my doctor submits the extension and when payments continue? I'm worried about a gap.

•Did your payments continue smoothly or was there a gap between when your original claim ended and the extension kicked in?

I just went through this exact situation in January when my doctor extended my disability from 8 weeks to 12 weeks. Here's what you need to know: 1. Your doctor must submit a "Supplemental Medical Certification" (not a new DE 2501) 2. It MUST be submitted before your current disability period ends 3. There shouldn't be a payment gap IF everything is submitted on time 4. You can check your SDI Online account to see when the new end date is updated I was panicking too, but the extension process was actually pretty smooth. Just make sure your doctor understands the urgency. My doctor's office submitted the paperwork electronically and my claim was updated within 3 days.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I didn't realize it was called a "Supplemental Medical Certification" - that will help me explain exactly what I need to my doctor. Did you have to fill out any paperwork yourself or was it all done by your doctor?

Ugh, the EDD system is SUCH a nightmare when it comes to extensions! When I needed my claim extended last year, my doctor submitted everything on time and they STILL stopped my payments for 3 weeks while they "processed" the extension. I couldn't pay my electric bill and had to borrow money from family. I called EDD literally 50+ times trying to get someone to help me. Always got disconnected or waited on hold for hours only to get hung up on. Total disaster.

•Same experience. My doctor sent everything correctly but payments stopped for almost a month. So stressful!

When I needed to extend my SDI claim, I had the same concerns about payment gaps. The key is making sure your doctor submits the supplemental certification *electronically* through SDI Online or their medical portal - it processes much faster than paper forms. Also, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach an EDD representative by phone to confirm they received your doctor's extension paperwork. They have a video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd With Claimyr, I got through to EDD in about 25 minutes instead of spending days calling and getting disconnected. The rep was able to verify they received my doctor's extension and tell me exactly when my next payment would process. Totally worth it for the peace of mind when you're stressed about finances.

•I've never heard of Claimyr but I'm going to check out that video right now. I've been calling EDD for days and can't get through. If this can actually get me connected to a real person, it would be worth it. My anxiety is through the roof right now.

your doctor needs to fill out a form saying you need more time they wont just keep paying you. its a supplement form not a whole new application. my claim got extended twice last year and i got paid the whole time. just make sure doctor sends it in before your current claim end date!!!

•Thanks! Did you have to remind your doctor multiple times? Mine can be pretty slow with paperwork.

One more important thing - make sure you continue certifying for benefits during this transition period. Some people think they don't need to certify while waiting for the extension approval, but you absolutely do. Log into your SDI Online account and complete any certification forms that appear, even if you're in the extension process. This ensures there's no delay in payments once the extension is approved.

•Oh wow, I didn't know this! I thought the certification was automatic once the doctor submitted their forms. Thank you for this critical information - I'll make sure to keep checking my SDI Online account.

After your doctor submits the extension paperwork, I highly recommend calling EDD to confirm they received it. They should be able to see in their system when the supplemental certification was received and if there are any issues with it. Extension requests are typically processed within 7-10 days, so if you don't see your claim updated in SDI Online after that timeframe, definitely follow up. Your benefit amount should remain the same during the extension period.

•Good luck getting through to EDD on the phone. I spent 3 days calling non-stop when I needed an extension verification. Complete nightmare.

Update: I talked to my doctor's office and they submitted the Supplemental Medical Certification electronically yesterday! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to EDD today. The representative confirmed they received my doctor's extension request and said my claim should be updated within 5-7 business days. She also told me to keep certifying as normal. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help - you saved me from a total financial disaster!

•That's great news! Keep an eye on your SDI Online account for the updated claim end date. Once that changes, you'll know the extension has been fully processed. Glad you were able to get through to EDD and confirm everything is on track.

Wait, did Claimyr actually work? I've been trying to reach EDD about my extension for 2 weeks with no luck. Didn't know there was a service that could help with that.

•Yes! I was skeptical too but I watched that YouTube video someone linked and decided to try it. Got connected to EDD in about 30 minutes which was amazing after days of trying on my own. The rep I spoke with was super helpful and confirmed everything was moving forward with my extension.
