Confused about EDD SDI extension - submitted twice with different receipt numbers
I'm totally stressed about my disability extension situation. My doctor just cleared me to continue my disability leave for another 6 weeks (dealing with post-surgery complications), and I immediately filed for an extension through SDI Online. I got my confirmation receipt number and forwarded it to my doctor's office. But here's where I'm confused - two days later, the EDD system prompted me AGAIN to complete extension paperwork, and I got a completely different receipt number! Did I mess up? Did my first submission fail somehow? Am I now back at the end of the queue with this second submission? Should I send this new receipt number to my doctor or stick with the original one I already sent? I really can't afford any delays in my benefits since my savings are almost gone at this point.

Don't panic! This happens more often than you'd think with the SDI system. When you submit an extension request, sometimes the system automatically generates a second notification because of timing issues with your claim period end date. The important thing to know is that your place in line is determined by your FIRST submission date, not the second one. However, I would recommend sending your doctor the newer receipt number as well, just to cover all bases. Your doctor should reference the most recent receipt number when submitting their certification.

•Thank you so much for the quick reply! That's a relief to hear. So you think I should send my doctor both receipt numbers just to be safe? I'm worried they'll get confused about which one to use when submitting their part.

lol same thing happened to me last month. dont worry about it, the second one is just the system being glitchy, happens ALL the time with EDD!! just make sure ur doc has at least one of the numbers and ur good

•That makes me feel better! Did you have any delays with your payments because of this glitch?

This is exactly why the EDD system is so frustrating!!! I had the SAME EXACT THING happen three months ago and it caused a 3-week delay in my benefits because my doctor's office got confused about which receipt to use and ended up not filing anything because they were waiting for clarification. The EDD reps kept giving me different answers every time I called - IF I could even get through. The whole system is designed to make you give up. Make sure you call your doctor's office to confirm they received both numbers and know which one to use!!!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Three weeks without benefits would be catastrophic for me right now. I'll definitely call my doctor's office first thing tomorrow morning to make sure they know what to do.

I've seen this issue come up repeatedly with disability extensions. Here's what's actually happening: The first receipt number is tied to your extension request, while the second notification is often generated when the system detects your current claim period is ending. Both submissions will ultimately be linked to your claim, but you're correct to be concerned about potential confusion. The most important thing is ensuring your medical provider submits their certification correctly. I recommend: 1. Send your doctor BOTH receipt numbers with clear dates of when each was generated 2. Explain that the second one came after the first, but that they should use the MOST RECENT one when submitting their certification 3. Follow up with your doctor's office after 3 business days to confirm they've submitted the certification 4. Check your SDI Online account daily to see if the status changes If you don't see a status update within 7 days, you should contact EDD directly. The medical certification is the most critical part of this process.

•This is incredibly helpful information. I'll definitely follow these steps. Do you know if there's a way to check in my SDI Online account to see if my doctor has actually submitted their certification? I can see when I submitted my part, but I'm not sure how to verify my doctor completed theirs.

Have you tried calling EDD to get clarification? When I had a similar issue with my pregnancy disability claim last year, I finally got through to a rep who explained everything and fixed it on the spot. The key is getting through to an actual person who can look at your specific claim details.

•Good luck with that! I spent THREE DAYS trying to call EDD last month and either got hung up on or was on hold for 2+ hours before giving up. The phone system is completely broken!!!

If you're having trouble reaching EDD by phone, I'd recommend using Claimyr. It's a service that helps connect you directly with an EDD representative without the endless hold times. I used it for my SDI claim last month when I had a similar extension issue and got through in about 15 minutes. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It saved me days of frustration trying to get answers about my disability extension.

•I've never heard of this service before. How exactly does it work? Did they actually get you through to someone who could help with the disability extension issue?

Yes! They basically wait on hold for you and call you back when they have an EDD agent on the line. I explained my extension confusion to the rep I got connected with, and she was able to look up both receipt numbers in the system and confirm which one my doctor should use. She also noted my account so there wouldn't be any issues with the duplicate submissions. Definitely worth it to get an immediate answer rather than stressing for days.

•That sounds like exactly what I need right now. I'm going to check it out. The peace of mind would be worth it because this waiting and uncertainty is making my condition worse honestly.

Wait im confuesd, isnt this for unemployment not disability? I thought SDI was differnt system?

•No, SDI (State Disability Insurance) is part of EDD (Employment Development Department), but it's a different program from Unemployment Insurance. SDI is for when you can't work due to a non-work-related illness or injury, while Unemployment is for when you're able to work but have lost your job. They're administered by the same department but have different requirements and processes.

I just want to follow up on your situation - were you able to get this resolved? For anyone else reading this thread in the future, I've found that the most reliable approach with extension receipt numbers is: 1. Always use the most recent receipt number when communicating with your healthcare provider 2. Document everything - save screenshots of submissions and confirmations 3. Follow up with your healthcare provider within 48 hours to confirm they've submitted their part 4. If possible, ask your provider to give you their confirmation number when they submit their certification The EDD system has been particularly glitchy with extensions since their system update in early 2025.

•Yes! Finally got it sorted out. I used that Claimyr service someone recommended and got through to an EDD rep who confirmed both submissions were in the system. They said my doctor should use the most recent receipt number, which they did. My extension was approved yesterday and I should receive payment within 3-5 business days. Such a relief! Thanks to everyone who helped!

So glad to hear you got it resolved! This is such a common issue that creates unnecessary stress during an already difficult time. For future reference for anyone dealing with similar duplicate receipt situations, I've found that keeping a simple log with dates and receipt numbers really helps when you need to explain the situation to EDD reps or your doctor's office. The key thing everyone should remember is that the EDD system often generates these duplicate notifications automatically - it's not necessarily something you did wrong. Your experience with Claimyr getting you connected quickly is really valuable info for others who might be struggling with the phone system. Hope your recovery goes smoothly!

•This is such great advice about keeping a log! I'm new to dealing with SDI and reading through this whole thread has been incredibly helpful. It's reassuring to know that the duplicate receipt issue is common and not necessarily user error. I'm bookmarking this conversation in case I run into similar problems with my own claim. @Serene Snow so happy you got everything sorted out - the stress of dealing with benefits issues while trying to recover from medical issues is just awful. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions!

This thread has been incredibly informative! As someone who's currently dealing with my first SDI claim, I had no idea about these potential duplicate receipt issues. It's reassuring to see that @Serene Snow was able to get everything resolved, and the advice about keeping detailed logs and using the most recent receipt number is gold. I'm definitely saving the Claimyr recommendation too - the idea of actually getting through to a real person at EDD without spending hours on hold sounds amazing. One question for the group: has anyone experienced delays in the actual payment processing after getting their extension approved? My doctor submitted everything last week and I'm wondering what timeline to expect. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - this community is such a lifeline when dealing with these complex benefit systems!

•Welcome to the SDI world @Sofia Morales! From my experience and what I've seen others share here, payment processing after extension approval typically takes 3-5 business days, but it can sometimes stretch to 7-10 days depending on system backlog. The good news is that once your doctor submits everything correctly (which sounds like they did), the hard part is usually over. I'd recommend checking your SDI Online account every morning - you'll see the status change from "pending" to "paid" when it processes. If it's been more than a week since your doctor submitted and you don't see any status updates, that's when I'd consider using that Claimyr service to get through to someone. This community really has been a lifesaver - so much better than trying to navigate the EDD website's confusing help sections!

This entire thread is exactly why I love this community! @Serene Snow, I'm so relieved you got everything sorted out - that kind of stress while recovering from surgery is just awful. For anyone else who might stumble across this in the future, I want to add one more tip: if you're dealing with multiple receipt numbers, take screenshots of EVERYTHING in your SDI Online account. I learned this the hard way when I had a similar issue last year and couldn't remember which forms I'd submitted when. Having those screenshots saved me when I finally got through to an EDD rep. The duplicate receipt thing really is more common than people realize - the system seems to generate them whenever there's any kind of timing overlap with benefit periods. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions here!

•@Yara Sayegh absolutely agree about taking screenshots! I m'actually dealing with my first SDI claim right now and this whole thread has been a goldmine of practical advice. Reading about @Serene Snow s experience'with the duplicate receipts and how stressful that was really opened my eyes to what to watch out for. I ve already'started keeping a simple notebook with dates and confirmation numbers after seeing the suggestions here. It s amazing'how this community fills in all the gaps that the official EDD resources leave out. The screenshot tip is brilliant - I m definitely'going to start doing that for every step of my claim process. Thanks to everyone for being so generous with sharing their real experiences!

Reading through this entire thread as someone who's about to start my first SDI claim has been incredibly eye-opening! @Serene Snow I'm so glad you got everything resolved - the stress of dealing with benefit issues while trying to recover must have been overwhelming. The duplicate receipt number situation sounds like such a nightmare, but it's reassuring to know it's a common system glitch rather than user error. I'm definitely going to bookmark all the advice shared here about keeping detailed logs, taking screenshots, and using the most recent receipt number. The Claimyr service recommendation is also going straight into my notes - actually being able to talk to a real EDD person without the endless hold times sounds like it would be worth every penny when you're dealing with time-sensitive benefit issues. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences so openly - this community provides the kind of practical, real-world guidance that you just can't get from official websites!

•@Natasha Petrov you re'so smart to be doing your research ahead of time! I wish I had found this community before I started my claim process. Reading through @Serene Snow s experience'really shows how these system glitches can turn what should be a straightforward process into a major source of stress when you re already'dealing with health issues. The advice about documentation is spot on - I ve been'dealing with SDI for a few months now and can t tell'you how many times having screenshots and detailed notes has saved me from confusion later. One thing I d add'is to also screenshot any error messages you might encounter - sometimes those help the EDD reps figure out what went wrong faster. Good luck with your upcoming claim, and don t hesitate'to ask questions here - everyone s been'super helpful!

This thread is such a perfect example of why community support matters so much when dealing with complex benefit systems! As someone who went through a similar SDI extension nightmare about 8 months ago, I can totally relate to @Serene Snow's initial panic about the duplicate receipt numbers. The EDD system really does seem designed to create confusion at the worst possible times. I'm so glad you were able to get it resolved! For anyone else who might face this situation, I want to emphasize something that really helped me: don't be afraid to be "that person" who calls your doctor's office multiple times to confirm they received everything and understand which receipt number to use. Medical offices deal with insurance paperwork all day, but SDI extensions aren't as common, so sometimes they need extra clarification. Also, if you're using a specialist's office (like I was for my orthopedic surgeon), they might route the paperwork through their billing department, which can add extra time and potential confusion. The Claimyr recommendation is gold - I ended up using them too after spending literally days trying to get through on my own. Sometimes paying a small fee for peace of mind and actual answers is worth every penny when your financial stability is on the line.

•@JacksonHarris this is such valuable advice about following up with doctor's offices! I'm just starting to navigate the SDI system and reading everyone's experiences here has been incredible. The point about specialists routing through billing departments is something I never would have thought about - that could definitely add unexpected delays. It's really reassuring to see how @Serene Snow s'situation worked out and how supportive this community is. I m'definitely going to save all these tips about documentation, using the most recent receipt numbers, and not being afraid to follow up multiple times. The stress of dealing with benefit issues while trying to focus on recovery is so real, and having practical advice from people who ve'actually been through it makes such a difference. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences so openly!

As someone new to this community and the SDI system, I just wanted to say how incredibly helpful this entire thread has been! Reading about @Serene Snow's experience with the duplicate receipt numbers really opened my eyes to the kinds of issues that can come up during the extension process. I'm currently preparing for what might be my first SDI claim, and all the practical advice shared here - from keeping detailed logs and taking screenshots to using the most recent receipt number and following up with healthcare providers - is exactly the kind of real-world guidance you can't find in the official EDD materials. The recommendation about Claimyr is also going straight into my notes for future reference. It's so reassuring to see how this community rallies around each other with practical solutions and emotional support during what can be incredibly stressful times. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and help others navigate this complex system!
