Will reporting boyfriend moved out affect his Medi-Cal if I apply for CalFresh/EBT for me and kids?
So my boyfriend just moved out last week after we broke up. He's currently on my CalWORKs case for Medi-Cal only (doesn't get cash aid). I need to apply for CalFresh/EBT now to feed me and my 3 kids since I'm struggling with groceries. I'm worried if I report the household change to get food stamps, they'll automatically cut off his Medi-Cal before he can figure out his own coverage. He has some health issues and needs his prescriptions. Does anyone know if reporting he moved out for my CalFresh application will immediately cancel his Medi-Cal? Should I wait to apply for food benefits until he gets his own coverage? I'm really confused about how the different benefits connect.

Yea they will cut it for sure. my sister bf was on her case and when they broke up n she told the worker he was gone his medi cal stopped like 2 days later. they dont care if hes sick or whatever. but you gotta report he moved out anyway bcuz if you dont n they find out they gonna say you committed fraud n make you pay back benefits.

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of 😫 I don't want him to lose coverage but I really need the food assistance asap. I can't afford to pay back benefits either. This system is so frustrating!

That's not entirely accurate. When your household composition changes, you do need to report it, but your boyfriend should still qualify for Medi-Cal on his own if he meets the income requirements. The best approach is to have him apply for his own Medi-Cal BEFORE you report the household change. He can apply through BenefitsCal.com and get his own case started. Once he has confirmation his application is being processed, then you can safely report he moved out and apply for CalFresh for you and your children. Technically, you're supposed to report changes within 10 days for CalWORKs, but the priority should be making sure he doesn't experience a gap in coverage. He might even qualify for more comprehensive Medi-Cal on his own depending on his income.

•This is right advice but the 10 day reporting is the issue tho. if she waits n they find out shes hiding that he moved she could get in BIG trouble. welfare fraud is serious they could make her pay everything back or even criminal charges maybe

Have your ex call Medi-Cal directly ASAP and explain his situation. He needs to start his own application immediately. Once he's in their system with his application pending, then you can safely report your household change and apply for CalFresh. You definitely need to report the change - it's considered fraud if you don't, and they can make you pay back benefits if they find out. Also, just so you know, CalFresh and Medi-Cal are separate programs even though they might be managed by the same office. Your reporting change to get CalFresh won't automatically cut his Medi-Cal that same day - there's usually a processing time where they send notices first.

•Thank you! I'm going to tell him to apply on his own right away. Do you know how long the processing usually takes? I'm just worried about timing everything right so he doesn't lose coverage.

Im going thru something similar rn but opposite - I moved OUT of my cousins house where i was on her case. what I did was apply for my own medi-cal first using benefitscal and THEN told them i moved. took about 2 weeks to get my new BIC card but my coverage never stopped. tell ur ex to apply first!! also for CalFresh they ask how many people buy and prepare food together so since hes gone that's definitely different now.

•This is exactly what I was going to say! The key is applying BEFORE reporting the change. Smart thinking.

Here's what you need to know - Medi-Cal and CalFresh are different programs with different eligibility rules. When your household composition changes: 1. Your boyfriend should immediately apply for his own Medi-Cal through BenefitsCal.com 2. Once he has a confirmation number for his application, then you should report the household change 3. You'll need to submit a SAR7 or mid-period report showing your boyfriend moved out 4. Apply for CalFresh for yourself and your three children as a household of 4 Don't delay reporting beyond 10 days as that can be considered an intentional program violation. But having him apply first is the safest approach.

•Thank you for breaking it down step by step! I didn't know about the SAR7 form, is that something I can get online? Or do I need to call my worker? (Which takes forever to get through

Try using Claimyr if you need to reach your CalWORKs worker quickly about this. I was in a similar situation last month and spent DAYS trying to get through to my worker. Found this service at claimyr.com that got me connected in about 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE that shows how it works. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone right away about time-sensitive stuff like household changes.

•I'll check that out, thanks! I've been trying to call for days and either get disconnected or told the wait time is over 2 hours. I'll try anything at this point.

you know what else I just membered - even if his medi-cal does stop for some reason he can apply for emergency medi-cal that starts right away if he needs his meds. my friend did that when she lost her coverage and it covered her hospital visit. just tellin u so u know theres like a backup option if something goes wrong

To answer your follow-up question about the SAR7 form - if it's not yet time for your regular Semi-Annual Report, you'd need to submit a Mid-Period Report instead for the household change. You can download the form from the BenefitsCal website or some counties even let you report changes through your online account now. Keep in mind that your CalFresh benefit amount will be calculated based on your household size (4 now without your boyfriend) and the total household income. Make sure you're also reporting any change in household income if your boyfriend was contributing to bills before.

•Thank you! Yes he was helping with bills before so my income situation has definitely changed too. I'll make sure to include all that info when I report the changes.

One more thing - when you apply for CalFresh, make sure you tell them you have housing costs (rent, utilities) that you're now paying on your own. This can significantly increase your CalFresh benefit amount. And with three kids, you should also ask about the School Lunch Program connection with CalFresh - your kids might automatically qualify for free school meals once you're approved for CalFresh.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I'm definitely struggling with all the bills on my own now. I'll make sure to include all my housing costs on the application.

I went through this exact same situation 6 months ago when my ex moved out. Here's what worked for me: First, have your boyfriend apply for his own Medi-Cal immediately through BenefitsCal.com - don't wait! He'll get a confirmation number right away. Then report the household change within the 10 day window. What I learned is that even though they're processed by the same office, CalFresh and Medi-Cal have different eligibility criteria. Your boyfriend will likely qualify for his own Medi-Cal coverage if his income is under the limit. The key is getting his application in the system BEFORE you report he moved out - this prevents any gap in coverage. Also, when you apply for CalFresh, emphasize that you now have 100% of the housing costs (rent, utilities, groceries) since he's no longer contributing. This will increase your benefit amount significantly. With 3 kids and being the sole provider now, you should qualify for a decent CalFresh amount. Don't let fear of his coverage stopping prevent you from getting the food assistance your family needs!

•This is such helpful advice from someone who actually went through it! I'm feeling much more confident now about the steps to take. Quick question - when your ex applied for his own Medi-Cal, did he need any specific documents or info from your case to help with his application? I want to make sure he has everything he needs to get approved quickly.
