Can I apply for CalFresh/SNAP without cash aid? Will they ask about absent parent?
So confused about the CalFresh application process... I'm thinking about applying for food benefits (SNAP/CalFresh) for me and my kids, but I don't want or need cash aid/CalWORKs. Can I just apply for food benefits only? Also, my children's father and I are still together as a couple, but he doesn't physically live in our home (he has his own place). Will they ask details about him during my CalFresh application? I don't want to cause any problems or have my application denied because our situation is complicated. Has anyone gone through something similar? I'm worried about filling out the household section wrong.

Yes, you can absolutely apply for CalFresh without applying for cash aid! They're separate programs even though they use the same application system. On the BenefitsCal website or paper application, you'll see checkboxes for which programs you want to apply for - just check CalFresh and leave the CalWORKs/cash aid box unchecked. As for your children's father - this is important: CalFresh eligibility is based on who purchases and prepares food together. Since he doesn't live in your home, you don't need to include him in your household. However, if he provides any financial support for the children, you'll need to report that as income. They'll likely ask if the children's father provides any child support (formal or informal).

•Thank you! That makes more sense. So even though we're together as a couple, since he doesn't live with us or buy/make food with us, he's not part of my "CalFresh household"? I was worried they'd think I was trying to hide something.

•Thanks for sharing! Did they ask you a lot of questions about the other parent? I'm nervous about that part because our situation isn't typical.

You're asking really good questions that many people wonder about! Yes, you can absolutely apply for CalFresh without applying for CalWORKs (cash aid). They're separate programs that many people confuse. Regarding your children's father - CalFresh eligibility is based on who lives together and prepares meals together. Since he doesn't live in your home, he would not be counted in your household. However, if he provides any financial support to you or the children, that would need to be reported as income on your application. When you apply, they'll ask who lives in your home and purchases/prepares meals together. Be completely honest about your living situation. They may ask if there is any child support (formal or informal) being received, as that counts as income for your household. Also, in 2025, the income limits for CalFresh are quite reasonable - for example, a household of 3 can have a gross monthly income of up to $3,250 and still potentially qualify. They'll look at your household's income and expenses (like rent and childcare costs) to determine your benefit amount.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! One more question - if he occasionally buys groceries for the kids or takes us out to eat, do I need to report that? Or is it just regular financial support that counts?

If he occasionally buys groceries or takes you out to eat, that's not considered income you need to report. What CalFresh is concerned with is regular, ongoing financial support - like if he gives you money every month for bills, rent, or other expenses. Occasional gifts or meals out wouldn't count as income. Just be prepared to clearly explain your living situation during the interview. The eligibility worker's main concern is understanding who lives in your home and shares food/meals together, as that's how they determine your household size for CalFresh.

When I applied last year they were SUPER nosy about my kids' dad. Asked tons of questions about where he was and why he wasn't providing support even though I NEVER applied for cash aid!!! Just be prepared they might dig into it.

•That's interesting - they might have been asking those questions because they're required to refer all single parents to the child support services department unless there's a good reason not to (like domestic violence concerns). But that referral process shouldn't affect your CalFresh eligibility itself. It's more about the state trying to get child support established whenever possible.

Just want to add to what others have said - I recently went through the process of applying for just CalFresh (not cash aid) with a somewhat complicated household situation too. You absolutely can apply for just food benefits! One thing that really helped me was being able to actually talk to a county worker instead of just trying to figure it all out from the online form. I was stuck on hold for HOURS trying to reach someone until I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at the county office. You might want to check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or their website claimyr.com if you're having trouble getting through. Saved me so much frustration and the worker I spoke with helped me understand exactly how to explain my situation on the application.

•Is that service legit??? I've been trying to reach my county office for 2 weeks and keep getting disconnected! So frustrating when you just need to ask a simple question.

•Yeah it's legit - I was skeptical at first but it actually worked for me. The hold times for CalFresh in my county were ridiculous before I used it.

I got CALFRESH for me and my kids for 2 years now and never got cash aid. You check which benefits you want on the application. BUT!!! They 100% will ask about your childrens father and if he pays child support. They want to know every penny coming into your household!!!!!!! If you don't tell them and they find out later you could get an OVERPAYMENT and have to pay back benefits. Just be honest about everything!!!!!

•Thank you for the warning! I definitely don't want to get in trouble with an overpayment. He doesn't pay formal child support but does help with expenses sometimes. I'll make sure to explain our situation clearly.

Just to follow up on your question about occasional grocery purchases - you're right that occasional help like that isn't typically countable income. What they're looking for is regular, predictable financial support. When you have your interview, the eligibility worker should walk through all of this with you. Be prepared to explain your living situation clearly. For the application, you'll list everyone who lives with you and purchases/prepares food together. Since your children's father doesn't live with you, he wouldn't be listed as part of your household, but any regular financial contribution he makes would be counted as income. Be aware that in 2025, the verification requirements are pretty thorough. They may ask for things like lease agreements, utility bills, pay stubs, and bank statements to verify your household situation and income. Having these documents ready can make the application process much smoother.

Thank you all so much for the helpful information! I feel much better about applying now. I'll be honest about our living situation and the financial support he provides. I just wasn't sure how to categorize our relationship since we're together but don't live together. Sounds like for CalFresh purposes, what matters is who lives in the home and shares food, not relationship status. I'll gather all my documents and apply this week!

Good luck with your application! Just wanted to add one more thing that helped me - when you do your phone interview (they'll schedule one after you submit your application), write down a brief summary of your living situation beforehand so you can explain it clearly. Something like "I live with my two children at [address]. Their father and I are in a relationship but he maintains his own residence and doesn't live with us or purchase/prepare food with us. He occasionally provides [whatever support he gives]." Having it written down helped me stay clear and consistent when I was nervous during my interview. The worker appreciated that I was organized and honest about everything upfront!

•That's such great advice about writing things down beforehand! I'm definitely going to do that. I get nervous on phone calls and tend to ramble or forget important details. Having a clear summary prepared will help me stay focused and make sure I explain our situation properly. Thanks for the tip!

I just went through this exact situation a few months ago! You can definitely apply for CalFresh without cash aid - they're completely separate programs. When you fill out the application, there are checkboxes for which benefits you want, so just check CalFresh and leave CalWORKs unchecked. For your household situation, since your children's father doesn't live with you or share meals, he's not part of your CalFresh household. However, you'll need to report any regular financial support he provides as income. The key thing is to be completely honest during your interview - they're not trying to trip you up, they just need to understand your actual living situation. One tip: keep records of any support he provides (like if he gives you money monthly for bills) because they might ask for documentation. But don't stress too much - your situation isn't that unusual and the workers have seen it all before. Good luck with your application!

•This is really helpful! I'm in a similar situation and was worried about how to explain the relationship status vs living arrangement. It's reassuring to know that CalFresh focuses on the household composition rather than relationship details. Did they ask you many follow-up questions during your interview about why you and the father don't live together? I'm nervous they might think it's suspicious or something.

I can definitely relate to your situation! I applied for CalFresh about 6 months ago as a single mom and was also confused about the application process at first. You absolutely can apply for just food benefits without cash aid - they're totally separate programs even though they use the same application system. For your household composition, since your children's father doesn't physically live with you or purchase/prepare meals together, he wouldn't be counted as part of your CalFresh household. The eligibility is really based on who shares living space and food, not relationship status. However, if he provides any regular financial support (like monthly money for rent, utilities, or child expenses), you'll need to report that as income. During my interview, they asked straightforward questions about who lives in my home, what my monthly income is, and what expenses I have. They weren't judgmental about my living situation at all - just wanted to make sure they had accurate information for determining benefits. My advice is to gather all your documents beforehand (pay stubs, rent receipts, utility bills) and be completely honest about your situation. The process was actually much smoother than I expected once I stopped overthinking it!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through a similar situation. I was definitely overthinking it and worrying that they'd think I was being deceptive about our living arrangement. Your point about focusing on who shares living space and food rather than relationship status makes perfect sense. I'm going to start gathering all my documents this week and just be straightforward about everything during the interview. Did you end up qualifying for a decent benefit amount? I'm hoping the food assistance will really help with our grocery budget.

I went through a very similar situation last year! You can absolutely apply for CalFresh without applying for cash aid - they're completely separate programs. When you fill out the application (either online through BenefitsCal or on paper), you'll see checkboxes for different programs and you can just select CalFresh and leave the CalWORKs box unchecked. For your household situation, since your children's father doesn't live with you and doesn't purchase/prepare food with your household, he wouldn't be counted as part of your CalFresh household. The key factor for CalFresh is who lives together and shares meals, not relationship status. However, you will need to report any regular financial support he provides as income. During the interview process, they'll ask about your living situation and any income coming into your household. Just be honest and straightforward - your situation isn't unusual and the eligibility workers have seen all kinds of family arrangements. They're not trying to catch you in anything, they just need accurate information to determine your benefits. One thing that really helped me was writing down a brief summary of my living situation before my phone interview so I could explain it clearly without getting flustered. Good luck with your application - the food assistance can really make a difference for your family's budget!

•This is such helpful advice! Writing down a summary beforehand is brilliant - I always get nervous during phone interviews and forget what I wanted to say. Your point about them not trying to "catch" you is really reassuring too. I was worried they'd be suspicious about why we don't live together even though we're a couple, but it sounds like they just care about the practical household arrangements for benefit purposes. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!

I just wanted to add my experience as someone who recently went through this process! You can definitely apply for CalFresh only - I did the same thing about 8 months ago. The application is straightforward once you understand that you're just checking the box for food benefits and leaving cash aid unchecked. Your situation with your children's father is actually pretty common. Since he doesn't live in your home or share meals with you, he's not part of your CalFresh household regardless of your relationship status. The main thing they care about is the actual living arrangement and who buys/prepares food together. During my interview, they asked basic questions about who lives with me, my income, and my expenses. They did ask if I receive any child support, but when I explained that the father helps occasionally but doesn't provide regular monthly support, they just made a note of it. The worker was professional and not judgmental at all. One tip that helped me: when they ask about "household composition," think of it as "who eats meals together in this house" rather than getting caught up in relationship details. That simple reframe made it much easier for me to answer their questions clearly. You've got this - don't let the application intimidate you!
