Will my newborn qualify for P-EBT? Baby born January 2025 - eligibility and amount questions
My son was just born on January 11th and we're currently receiving CalWORKs and CalFresh. I heard something about children getting P-EBT cards but I'm confused about whether newborns qualify. Does anyone know if my baby will get his own P-EBT card? And if he does qualify, how much would he receive? We're really struggling with formula costs right now so any extra help would make a huge difference. Our CalWORKs worker wasn't very clear when I asked about this last week.

P-EBT is specifically for school-aged children who would normally receive free or reduced-price meals at school. Since your newborn isn't school age, he wouldn't qualify for P-EBT. However, you should make sure you've reported his birth to your CalWORKs office because adding him to your household will increase your Cash Aid amount AND your CalFresh benefits. Make sure to provide verification of his birth - either the birth certificate or hospital records. The increase could be significant depending on your current household size.

•Thank you for explaining that. I did report him to my caseworker but they said the paperwork is still processing. Do you know how much extra CalFresh we might get for him? Also when would the increase start - from his birth date or when they finish processing everything?

•Thanks! That gives me some idea at least. Do you know how long it took for her benefits to increase after she reported the baby?

Just to clarify some information here: P-EBT (Pandemic EBT) was a temporary program during COVID that provided food benefits to families with children who would normally receive free or reduced-price school meals. For your newborn, you won't get P-EBT, but you SHOULD: 1. Report the birth to CalWORKs immediately (which you've done - good!) 2. Provide verification (birth certificate, hospital discharge papers) 3. Apply for WIC if you haven't already - they specifically help with formula costs Your CalWORKs grant should increase by approximately $150-200 per month for the additional child (varies by county and your situation). Your CalFresh should also increase. Both increases should be retroactive to when you reported the birth, not when they finish processing.

•Wait I'm confused... I thought P-EBT was still happening? My kids got cards in the mail in December for the 2024-2025 school year. Are they stopping it now???

•You're right that there have been some P-EBT extensions for school-aged children who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. However, it doesn't apply to infants who aren't in school yet. Your school-aged children might still be receiving benefits through extensions of the program, but newborns don't qualify for P-EBT specifically.

DEF apply for WIC!!! They will give u formula vouchers and it doesnt affect ur other benefits at all. My baby is 9 months and WIC saved us so much $$$ on formula. They give u like 10 cans a month which is like $200+ worth

•I already applied for WIC at the hospital but haven't heard back yet. Do you know how long it usually takes? And do they backdate benefits if it takes a while to process?

Have you tried calling your CalWORKs worker to check on your case? I was trying for WEEKS to reach someone about adding my nephew to my case and kept getting stuck in the automated system or disconnected. SO FRUSTRATING!!! I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Worth it to get your baby added faster so you can get the increased benefits!

•I haven't heard of that service before. I'll check it out because I've been calling every day with no luck. Either busy signal or on hold forever until I have to hang up for work. Thanks for the suggestion!

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!!! they make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone then act like its YOUR fault when paperwork isn't processed on time!! my daughter had a baby in november and they STILL haven't increased her benefits even tho she submitted everything right away. they keep saying "its processing" but how long does it take to add a BABY to a case file?!?!? its RIDICULOUS!!

•If it's been more than 30 days since she submitted complete verification, she should request a Fair Hearing. The county is required to process reported changes within 10 days of receiving verification. A Fair Hearing request often speeds things up because counties don't want to deal with the hearing process.

Don't forget to also ask about the diaper stipend! CalWORKs has a program that gives you $30 extra per month for diapers for each child under 3 years old. You have to specifically request it though - they won't automatically add it. I didn't find out about it until my baby was almost a year old and missed out on so much help.

•I had no idea about this! $30 a month would help so much with diapers. I'll definitely ask about that when I get through to someone. Do you know if there's a specific form I need to fill out for the diaper stipend?

•I don't think there's a specific form - I just told my worker I wanted to request the diaper benefit and she added it. But definitely mention it specifically because they don't always tell you about all the benefits you qualify for!

One more thing to consider - when you added your newborn to your CalWORKs case, did they also ask about the baby's father? If you're not living with the father, the county will probably ask you to cooperate with child support enforcement unless you have good cause not to (like domestic violence concerns). This doesn't affect whether your baby gets benefits, but it's something to be prepared for in case they bring it up.

•Yes, they did ask about that. The father and I are together but he doesn't live with us full-time because of his work (he's a truck driver). I provided his information. Would that still require child support enforcement or is that only if we're completely separated?

•If you've declared him as the father and provided his information, you're cooperating with the requirement. Since you're not married but in a relationship, they might still refer the case to child support services to establish legal paternity, but this won't necessarily mean he has to pay support if you're in a relationship and he's helping support the child. The county just wants to ensure there's legal paternity established.
