Will my CalFresh amount decrease if one child is removed from my CalWORKs case?
I'm in a really confusing situation with my benefits right now. My oldest son just got taken off my CalWORKs case (he moved to his dad's), but me and my other 2 kids are still on it. Before all this happened, I was getting $850 in CalFresh. Then I got put on a WTW sanction and my food stamps dropped to $300, then went down more to $200. I finally cleared the sanction last month and my CalFresh went back up to $397, but that's still way less than the $850 I was getting before. Is this because my son isn't on the case anymore? Will they keep my food stamps this low even though I'm off the sanction? I'm really struggling to feed my kids with this amount.

Your CalFresh benefits are based on household size, income, and expenses. When your household size decreased (your son moving out), that would definitely cause a reduction in your CalFresh amount. The sanction also affected it, but even with the sanction cleared, you won't get back to $850 because that was calculated for a household with one more person. Also, sometimes when they recalculate after a sanction is lifted, they might have updated other information about your income or expenses that could affect the amount. Have you had any other changes recently (job, rent, utilities)?

•So it'll never go back up to $850? My rent actually went UP and I still have the same part-time job... nothing else changed except my son leaving. But $397 is like less than half of what I was getting before! How am I supposed to feed 2 growing kids on that? This doesn't make any sense.

They absolutely SLASH your benefits when household size changes - happened to me too when my teenager moved out. What's crazy is removing 1 person shouldn't cut your benefits in HALF but that's exactly what they do! The system is rigged against us. And they probably didn't even tell you this would happen when your son left, did they? 🤬

•It shouldn't actually cut it in half - the reduction should be proportional to household size change. From 4 people to 3 people might reduce it by about 25%, not 50%. There might be something else affecting the calculation.

This is actually a common issue with CalFresh recalculations after household changes. The $850 to $397 drop seems larger than just removing one household member would cause. Here's what might be happening: 1. When you were sanctioned, they did a full recalculation of your case 2. During that recalculation, they might have updated income information or expense deductions 3. The $850 might have included some back benefits or corrections that made it temporarily higher I would definitely call your eligibility worker and ask for a breakdown of how your new CalFresh amount was calculated. They should be able to explain exactly why it changed so dramatically.

•Thank you for explaining. I've been trying to call for 3 days but keep getting stuck on hold forever and then disconnected. So frustrating! Do I need to ask for anything specific when I finally get through?

I went through something similar last year. Spent 2 weeks trying to call my worker with no luck. I finally tried Claimyr.com to get through to my county worker - they got me connected in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE When you do get through, specifically ask for a "CalFresh Budget Worksheet" that shows exactly how they calculated your benefit amount. That way you can see if they made any mistakes with your income or expenses. In my case, they had wrong info about my rent amount which was causing my benefits to be way too low.

•Thank you!! I'll try that service because I'm going crazy trying to get through. And I'll definitely ask for that worksheet - I bet they messed something up because this drop makes no sense.

hey ur situation sounds familiar did u recently report any new income? sometimes when they lift a sanction they also process other changes at the same time and dont tell u. my benefits went way down cause my ex started paying child support and they counted that as income even tho i told them he only paid once n stopped lol

•No new income, same job I've had for 2 years. But maybe child support is the issue? My ex is supposed to pay but he's super inconsistent. Maybe they're counting that as income even though I'm not actually getting it regularly? That would be so unfair!

The CalFresh calculation is really complicated! They take your total gross income, subtract a standard deduction based on household size, then subtract 20% of earned income, then subtract child care expenses, then subtract housing costs (but only up to a certain amount)... it's no wonder the amounts seem random sometimes. Definitely get that budget worksheet when you finally reach someone!

•I had no idea it was that complicated! I'll definitely ask for that worksheet. Thanks everyone for the help, I feel a little less crazy now knowing there might be an actual explanation for this.

Make sure when you call that you specifically mention you need to know why your CalFresh dropped from $850 to $397 even after your sanction was removed. Sometimes the workers don't volunteer information unless you ask very specific questions. Also, it's possible that the $850 might have included some retroactive benefits that made it temporarily higher. Did you receive any lump-sum payments or back benefits around the time you were getting $850?

•Now that you mention it, I think there might have been some back pay involved when I first got the $850. I remember there was an issue with my application that took extra time to resolve, and then I got a larger payment. So maybe the $850 wasn't my normal amount to begin with? Ugh this is all so confusing.

•That makes total sense! If the $850 included back pay, then your regular monthly amount was probably closer to what you're getting now (adjusted for the smaller household size). When they processed your sanction removal, they would have calculated your ongoing monthly benefit based on your current 3-person household, not the 4-person household you had when you first applied. So really, the $397 might actually be the correct amount for your current situation. Still worth getting that budget worksheet to confirm everything is accurate though!
