CalFresh benefits still not restored 3 weeks after work sanction removed - will I get back payments?
Hi everyone, I'm really confused about my CalFresh benefits situation. I had a work requirement sanction that was affecting both my Cash Aid and CalFresh. They removed the sanction from my Cash Aid about 3 weeks ago (I'm getting the full amount now), but my CalFresh benefits are still reduced. When I called, the rep said they 'didn't take it off' for CalFresh but that 'they will notify a worker.' I've been waiting 3 weeks now and nothing has changed. Will I eventually get the remaining food stamps I'm owed? Will my benefits automatically come back to the full amount next month? My kids and I are really struggling without the full food benefit amount. Has anyone dealt with sanctions being removed at different times for different benefits?

This happens often because Cash Aid and CalFresh are actually separate programs even though they're administered together. When a sanction is lifted, sometimes the systems don't communicate properly. You should definitely follow up instead of waiting. Call your eligibility worker directly and specifically mention that your work sanction was removed for Cash Aid but not CalFresh. Request that they process this change immediately and ask about retroactive benefits for the 3 weeks you've been shorted.

•Thank you! Do you know if I'll get back the benefits I missed these past 3 weeks? The worker I talked to was really vague about whether I'd get any retroactive payment.

•Oh no, 2 months?? We can't wait that long for food. Did you have to talk to a supervisor to get it fixed or just keep calling until you got someone helpful?

•just kept calling til i got someone who actually knew what they were doing. most of them had no idea why my calfresh wasnt fixed when my cashaid was

You need to act on this right away. In my experience, when they say "they will notify a worker," nothing actually happens unless you follow up multiple times. CalFresh and CalWORKs (Cash Aid) have separate sanction processes, and the removal doesn't automatically transfer between programs. Call your county office and specifically ask for an "expedited resolution of sanction removal" for your CalFresh case. Mention it's causing food insecurity for your family. They SHOULD issue retroactive benefits for the reduced amount during this period, but you need to specifically request this.

•Thank you so much for the advice! I'll definitely use that exact phrase about "expedited resolution of sanction removal" when I call. Do you know if there's a specific department I should ask for? Last time I called I got transferred around a lot.

•Ask specifically for the CalFresh unit, not the general eligibility department. If they try to transfer you to the employment services unit (who handles work requirements), politely insist that you need to speak with someone who can process a CalFresh sanction removal that's already been approved for Cash Aid. Be prepared to explain multiple times that the Cash Aid sanction was already removed 3 weeks ago.

For anyone struggling to reach the CalFresh county office, I recently used a service called Claimyr that helped me get through after weeks of trying. You enter your number on their website (claimyr.com), and they call the county for you, wait on hold, then call you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of holding and getting disconnected. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Totally worth checking out if you're dealing with sanction issues that need immediate attention.

•Thank you! I've been trying to get through for days and keep getting disconnected. I'll check this out if I can't get through tomorrow morning.

•does that actually work? sounds kinda sketchy to have some random service calling welfare for u

•It definitely worked for me. They don't actually talk to anyone at the county - they just hold your place in line and then connect you directly when someone answers. You do all the talking yourself. It saved me from having to redial 20+ times.

THE COUNTY ALWAYS DOES THIS!!! They are DELIBERATELY slow with fixing CalFresh sanctions even after they fix Cash Aid because they KNOW most people won't follow up. I had to FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT when this happened to me last year because they kept saying "it's being processed" for 2 months!!! Don't let them get away with this - ask for a supervisor immediately and tell them you want to file a formal complaint due to failure to process your sanction removal in a timely manner. DEMAND retroactive benefits!!!!!

•I didn't know you could file a formal complaint! How did you do that? Did it actually speed things up? I'm trying to avoid confrontation but I also need to feed my kids...

•Just tell them you want to speak to a supervisor and file a formal complaint. They have to document it. Then ask for the state fair hearing request form. Just MENTIONING the fair hearing usually gets them moving because they don't want to deal with the paperwork. They fixed mine within 48 hours after I threatened the hearing.

im confused arent calfresh and foodstamps the same thing? my husband had a similar issue with his work requirements and we just went to the office in person and they fixed it that day. sometimes its easier than calling

•Yes, CalFresh is California's name for the federal SNAP program, which many people still call food stamps. Going in person is often more effective, you're right about that. The one challenge is that many offices still require appointments for in-person services in 2025, so calling ahead to schedule might be necessary.

Just to clarify about the retroactive benefits since many people are asking: Yes, you ARE entitled to back benefits for the period after your sanction was removed from Cash Aid. This is because the removal should have been applied to both programs simultaneously. When you call, specifically request "restoration of benefits due to administrative error" for the 3-week period. Document everything - who you speak with, dates of calls, and what was promised. If they try to tell you the system doesn't allow retroactive benefits, that's incorrect for sanction removal situations.

•Thank you for this specific information! I'll write down "restoration of benefits due to administrative error" so I remember to say it exactly like that. Would it help if I have my Cash Aid approval letter showing when the sanction was removed?

•Absolutely! Having that documentation is extremely helpful. Bring or reference the exact date on the Cash Aid sanction removal letter. This proves when the CalFresh sanction should have been removed as well. Make copies of everything. The more specific documentation you have, the harder it is for them to delay fixing this.

This is unfortunately a common issue with sanction removals not being processed correctly across both programs. I went through something similar last year where my CalFresh stayed sanctioned for 6 weeks after my Cash Aid was restored. What finally worked for me was calling first thing in the morning (around 8 AM) and asking to speak with a CalFresh eligibility supervisor specifically about "coordinating sanction removal between programs." I also mentioned that I had children and this was causing food insecurity. They expedited my case and I received retroactive benefits for the entire period I was shorted. Don't give up - you're entitled to those back benefits and they know it. Keep detailed records of every call and push for a timeline on when this will be resolved.

•This is really helpful advice about calling early and asking for a supervisor! I'm definitely going to try the 8 AM call tomorrow and use that exact phrase about "coordinating sanction removal between programs." It's so frustrating that this seems to be such a common problem - you'd think their systems would be better connected by now. Thank you for sharing what worked for you, it gives me hope that I can get this resolved soon.

I'm dealing with something very similar right now! My work sanction was removed from Cash Aid about 2 weeks ago, but my CalFresh is still showing the reduced amount. Reading through all these responses is really eye-opening - I had no idea this was such a common problem or that the systems don't communicate with each other properly. I'm definitely going to try calling early tomorrow morning and use some of the specific phrases people mentioned here like "expedited resolution of sanction removal" and asking for the CalFresh unit specifically. It's really reassuring to know that others have gotten their retroactive benefits eventually, even if it took some persistence. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this thread is incredibly helpful for those of us navigating this frustrating process!

•Welcome to the club none of us wanted to join! 😅 It's really frustrating that this system issue is so widespread, but I'm glad this thread exists to help people like us figure out what to do. I just started dealing with this myself about a week ago - my Cash Aid sanction got removed but CalFresh is still reduced. After reading everyone's advice here, I'm planning to call tomorrow morning too and be much more specific about what I'm asking for. It sounds like persistence is key and we really do have to advocate for ourselves. Good luck with your call tomorrow - maybe we can both get this sorted out soon! Let us know how it goes if you get a chance to update.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My Cash Aid sanction was removed about 10 days ago but my CalFresh is still showing the reduced amount. This thread has been so helpful - I had no idea this was such a widespread issue or that the two programs don't automatically sync up. I'm definitely going to try calling first thing Monday morning and use the specific language everyone mentioned here about "expedited resolution of sanction removal" and asking for the CalFresh unit directly. It's really encouraging to see that people have gotten their retroactive benefits, even if it took some persistence. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences - it's given me a much clearer action plan than just waiting around hoping it gets fixed automatically!

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm actually brand new to receiving CalFresh and Cash Aid, and I had no idea that sanctions could affect the programs differently like this. Reading everyone's experiences has been really educational - it sounds like this system disconnect is unfortunately very common. I haven't dealt with sanctions myself yet, but seeing how helpful everyone has been in sharing specific phrases to use and strategies that worked gives me confidence that this community really looks out for each other. Good luck with your call on Monday! I hope you get it resolved quickly. It's really reassuring to know there are people here who understand these complicated systems and are willing to help others navigate them.

As someone who just started navigating the CalFresh system a few months ago, I'm shocked to learn from this thread that sanctions can be removed from Cash Aid but not CalFresh automatically! This seems like such a basic system flaw - why wouldn't they be connected? Reading everyone's advice here has been incredibly helpful though. It sounds like the key is being very persistent and using specific language when you call. I'm taking notes on phrases like "expedited resolution of sanction removal" and "restoration of benefits due to administrative error" in case I ever need them. Mei, I really hope you get this resolved soon - it's awful that you and your kids are going without full food benefits when the sanction has already been lifted. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and specific advice. This community is so valuable for helping people understand these confusing systems!

•You're absolutely right about it being a basic system flaw! I'm pretty new to this whole process too and was shocked to discover through this thread that CalFresh and Cash Aid don't automatically communicate with each other. It seems like such an obvious thing that should be connected. I've been taking notes on all the helpful phrases everyone mentioned as well - this community really is amazing for breaking down these complicated systems in ways that actually make sense. Reading everyone's experiences here has given me so much more confidence about how to navigate potential issues. It's really heartwarming to see how people who have been through these struggles are willing to share specific, actionable advice to help others. Mei, I'm rooting for you to get this resolved quickly! And thank you to everyone else who has shared their knowledge - you're making such a difference for people trying to figure out these systems.
