When should I report pregnancy/newborn to CalWORKs - before or after birth?

I'm currently 7 months pregnant and receiving CalWORKs for myself only. I'm confused about when I should report this change to increase my household size. Should I tell my caseworker now while I'm still pregnant or wait until after my baby is born? I don't want to miss out on benefits, but I also don't want to report too early and mess something up. Does anyone know the right timing for this? Will they increase my Cash Aid amount automatically when I report the birth or do I need to go through a whole application process again? Thanks!

Drake

You should report your pregnancy now AND report again when baby is born! During pregnancy, you can get the special needs pregnancy supplement ($47/month I think) if you provide verification from your doctor. Then when baby arrives, report within 10 days to add them to your case - this will increase your grant amount significantly. Bring the birth certificate when you have it, but hospital paperwork works initially. The sooner you report after birth, the sooner they'll increase your cash aid. You won't need a new application, just the SAR 3 form to add a household member.

Thank you so much for explaining! I didn't even know about a pregnancy supplement. Do you know if they'll backdate that if I report now at 7 months? And after the baby comes, do you know how much the grant typically increases by?

congrats! i waited til after my bb was born cuz i didnt know about the pregnancy money lol. make sure u bring the hospital papers to ur worker ASAP after birth. they added my daughter to my case that same day and my next payment was higher. its way easier than i thought it would be tbh

You're lucky you had a good experience! When I had my baby last year, I reported it right away but it took them 3 WEEKS to update my case! I was so frustrated because I needed that extra money for diapers and formula. I kept calling every day but just got voicemail.

Adding to what others said - when you report your pregnancy now, ask about the Cal-Learn program if you're under 20, or the Family Stabilization Program. Both offer additional supportive services for pregnant CalWORKs recipients. After baby arrives, report the birth within 10 days. Your grant amount will increase effective the month of birth as long as you report timely. If your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) changes, they'll send you a new form with the updated amount. Also, once baby is born, make sure to ask about: - Diaper stipend ($30/month per child under 3) - Childcare assistance if you'll be working or in school - WIC if you haven't applied already Oh and don't forget to apply for Medi-Cal for the baby immediately after birth if you haven't already set that up.

Thank you for all this info! I'm 28 so no Cal-Learn for me, but I didn't know about the diaper stipend! That would be super helpful. Since I'm already on CalWORKs, will the baby automatically get Medi-Cal or do I need to apply separately for that too?

I'm confused about this too! I'm only 5 months along but haven't told my worker yet. Does telling them early affect the WTW requirements? I'm worried they'll make me participate in more activities if I tell them now vs waiting.

Great question! Actually, pregnancy can qualify you for a temporary WTW exemption, especially in the last trimester. When you report your pregnancy with medical verification, ask about a WTW exemption. This means you won't have to meet work requirements during late pregnancy and for a while after the baby is born (especially if you're a single parent with a child under 12 months).

You need to call NOW! I made the mistake of waiting until after my baby was born, and I missed out on almost $150 in pregnancy special needs payments (would have gotten $47/month for the last 3 months). Then after he was born, I couldn't get through to my worker by phone for almost 2 weeks! So frustrating when you have a newborn and need that money. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach someone at the office. They got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE - totally worth it when you need to get through fast. Don't wait - report your pregnancy now AND make sure you report within 10 days after the birth.

To answer your specific questions more directly: 1. Report your pregnancy NOW with medical verification to get the pregnancy special needs payment 2. After birth, report within 10 days (required by regulations) 3. For the grant increase: a household of 1 gets $607, household of 2 gets $817 (amounts for 2025), so that's about $210 more per month 4. No new application needed, just the SAR 3 form and birth verification 5. The cash aid increase is effective the month of birth if you report timely Hope this helps!

This is SO helpful, thank you! The actual dollar amounts really help me budget. Does the pregnancy special needs payment stop as soon as I report the birth? And when can I expect to see the first increased payment after I report the birth?

Congratulations!!! Make sure you also apply for WIC if you haven't already! They give you food benefits during pregnancy and then after for you and baby. It's separate from CalWORKs but really helps with formula which is SO expensive now. And yes def tell your worker NOW about pregnancy for the extra money and then again right after birth. It's really frustrating tho, when I had my second baby they took forever to update my case even tho I reported on time. Bureaucracy 🙄

I'm already on WIC thankfully! Good reminder that it'll change after birth though. Did you have any issues with your Medi-Cal when you had your baby? That's another thing I'm worried about handling correctly.

Just wanted to add - if you're having trouble reaching your caseworker by phone after you have the baby, you can also report the birth online through your county's CalWORKs portal if they have one set up. Some counties let you upload documents there too which can be faster than waiting on hold. Also, don't panic if your first increased payment seems off - sometimes they do adjustments the following month to make sure everything is calculated right. Keep all your paperwork and if something looks wrong after a couple months, definitely follow up. And one more tip - when you go to report the pregnancy now, ask them to put a note in your file about your due date so they can help remind you about reporting the birth when the time comes. Some workers are really good about checking in with clients around due dates!

Definitely report your pregnancy NOW! I wish I had known about the pregnancy supplement when I was expecting my daughter. I only found out about it after she was born and missed out on 3 months of extra money. When you call to report your pregnancy, make sure to ask specifically about the "pregnancy special needs" payment - sometimes they don't automatically tell you about it. You'll need a doctor's verification form but it's worth the extra $47/month. After your baby arrives, don't stress too much about getting the birth certificate right away. The hospital discharge papers work fine initially to add the baby to your case. I brought mine to the office the day after we got home from the hospital and they processed it same day. Also, once you report the birth, your next payment date might be different since they have to recalculate everything. Mine came a few days later than usual but it was the full increased amount. Good luck with everything and congrats on your upcoming arrival! 🍼

This is such great advice! I'm definitely calling my caseworker first thing tomorrow to report the pregnancy. It sounds like I've already missed out on some money by waiting this long, but better late than never. I'm relieved to hear that hospital papers work initially - I was worried I'd have to wait weeks for the birth certificate to get processed. Did you have any issues with them calculating the increased amount correctly, or did everything go smoothly once you reported?

Hey Gabriel! I just went through this exact situation 6 months ago. Definitely report your pregnancy NOW - don't wait! You're missing out on the pregnancy special needs payment ($47/month) for every month you don't report it. I reported mine at 6 months and still got 3 months of back payments. Here's what worked for me: Called my caseworker, told them I was pregnant, and they sent me a form for my doctor to fill out. Once I returned that, they added the pregnancy supplement to my next payment. After my baby was born, I went to the office with the hospital discharge papers within a week. They had me fill out the SAR 3 form right there and added my son to my case same day. My cash aid went from $607 to $817 starting the next month. Pro tip: If you can't reach your caseworker easily, try calling first thing in the morning (8 AM) or right after lunch (1 PM). Those seem to be the best times to actually get through. And don't stress about the birth certificate - hospital papers work fine to get things started! You've got this mama! 💕
