When can I call CalWORKs to check my Cash Aid amount for next month?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out when exactly I can call to check my CalWORKs benefit amount for next month. My rent is due on the 1st and I need to know how much Cash Aid I'll be getting so I can budget properly. I called last month on the 25th but they said the system didn't have my future payment info yet. Is there a specific day when the next month's benefits are loaded into their system? Anyone know the earliest I can call to find this out? Thanks!

Benefit amounts for the upcoming month are usually available in the system about 5 business days before the end of the current month. So roughly around the 25th or 26th, but it can vary by county. Some counties update their systems earlier than others. You might have just called too early last time. Try calling around the 27th-28th and you should be able to get your benefit amount for the following month.

Thanks for letting me know! I'll try calling on the 27th then. Hoping they don't keep me on hold forever...

I tried BenefitsCal but I can never get that site to work right. Half the time it logs me out for no reason, and I can never find where to see future payments. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

I had the EXACT same problem last month!!! Called 5 times and nobody could tell me what I'd be getting. Super frustrating when you're trying to plan for bills. I finally got through on the 29th and they could see my payment for the next month. Why do they make everything so complicated??

Omg yes! The system is designed to make us crazy I swear 😩 One time I called on the 28th and they still couldn't tell me. I hate not knowing if I'll have enough for rent! My worker said something about a "payment issuance schedule" but wouldn't explain what that meant.

I've worked with the CalWORKs system for years, and here's the actual timeline: The system generates benefit amounts for the following month during the last week of the current month, typically between the 25th-28th. However, this varies by county and can be affected by holidays, system maintenance, and batch processing schedules. The most reliable times to check are: 1. 3-4 business days before the end of the month by phone 2. 2-3 business days before the end of month on BenefitsCal (though as others mentioned, this can be glitchy) If you need to know for budgeting purposes, try calling after 2pm on the 27th or 28th. The morning calls often don't work because some counties run their batch processes overnight.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That's really helpful. I'll try calling after 2pm on the 27th. Do you know if there's a specific menu option when calling that gets me to someone who can check this faster? The automated system is so confusing.

I gave up on calling the county workers about this stuff. I spent almost 2 hours on hold last month trying to check my benefit amount and kept getting disconnected. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when a worker is available. Saved me so much time! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE I use it whenever I need to check my benefit amount or have questions about my case. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

Does this actually work? I'm so tired of being on hold for HOURS only to get disconnected. Is it legit?

Yes it works! I was skeptical too but it saved me from having to keep calling back. The first time I used it, I got a call back in about 45 minutes when before I was waiting on hold for over an hour and getting nowhere.

The most accurate answer is that it depends on your county's issuance schedule and whether you're receiving benefits through an EBT card or direct deposit. Generally: - Counties process benefit calculations between the 20th-25th of the month - System updates with new amounts between the 25th-28th - Customer service can usually see next month's benefits 3 business days before month-end Keep in mind that if there were any recent changes to your case (income reported, household change, completion of a SAR7, etc.), this might delay when your benefit amount is finalized for the next month. If you're trying to budget, you can also ask your worker to explain how your benefit is calculated so you can estimate it yourself based on your current situation.

That makes sense about the processing schedule. I did turn in my SAR7 last week so maybe that's affecting things. I'll try your suggestion of asking how my benefit is calculated - that would be really helpful for future planning. Thanks!

Last time I called they told me LIES!!!! Said my check would be $624 but then when it came it was only $512. When I called back they said something about an "overpayment adjustment" that nobody told me about!!! Always double check what they tell you and GET NAMES of who you talk to!!!

That's really frustrating. When they make adjustments for overpayments, they're supposed to send you a Notice of Action explaining the change before reducing your benefits. You have the right to request a hearing if you disagree with the reduction. Did you receive any notice in the mail about this?
