Found a secret time to call CalWORKs without any wait (7:56-7:58 AM)!
OMG you guys, I've been trying to reach my CalWORKs worker for THREE WEEKS about my cash aid being reduced for no reason. Every time I called, either got disconnected or was on hold forever until I had to hang up because of work or picking up my kid. But I accidentally discovered something that actually WORKS!! If you call between 7:56-7:58 AM (just before 8), but NOT on Mondays, you bypass the long queue somehow! I tried this last week when I was up early and was on hold for an hour (which is still better than usual), but today I called at exactly 7:57 AM and got through to a real person in less than 10 minutes!! They fixed my case right away - turns out they had processed my income wrong on my last SAR7. Make sure you have your case number ready to speed things up. Just wanted to share because I know how frustrating it is when your benefits get messed up and you can't reach anyone to fix it!

Really?? I've been calling for days trying to fix my Welfare to Work hours issue. They're threatening to sanction me even though I submitted all my verification. I'll try calling at that time tomorrow morning. Did you have to navigate through all those annoying automated menu options or did it put you straight through to a person?

•You still have to go through the whole menu (press 1 for English, enter case #, etc) but after that instead of the 'all representatives are busy' message, it actually puts you in a queue that moves! Hope it works for you too with your WTW problem!

this is BS lol i tried calling at 7:57 exactly and still was on hold for 45 min yesterday. depends on your county i guess

•Oh no! Maybe it does depend on the county. I'm in LA County. Which one are you in? Also did you try on a Monday? I found Mondays are always the worst no matter what time you call.

I can confirm this works in San Bernardino County too! I've been trying to reach someone about my 48-month time limit notification (which I think is wrong because I had an exemption during my pregnancy). Called at 7:56 am exactly today and was connected with a worker by 8:15. She was able to review my time-on-aid calculation and confirmed that 6 months should be removed from my count because of the documented exemption. One important tip - if you have a complicated issue like mine with time limits or WTW participation, ask for a worker who specializes in that area. The first person who answered was going to transfer me anyway, so you can save time by asking right away.

•That's such a good point about asking for a specialist! Glad it worked for you too and you got your time limit fixed!

•I'm so trying this tomorrow morning. My WTW counselor keeps saying I need to do more hours even though I already submitted my school schedule showing I'm in an approved program. They just don't read anything I submit!

Just to add some clarification: CalWORKs offices typically have fewer staff answering phones right when they open, but they also have fewer callers that early. Most people start calling after 9am, which is when the wait times get really bad. Also, calling mid-week (Tuesday-Thursday) is typically better than Monday or Friday because people tend to call at the beginning or end of the week. If you have a really urgent issue and can't get through on the phone, remember you can also: 1. Send a message through BenefitsCal (though responses can take 2-3 days) 2. Go to your local office in person (bring all your documents) 3. Contact your assigned worker directly if you have their direct extension Also: if your benefits have been reduced or cut off incorrectly, make sure to request a hearing within 90 days. You can do this even while trying to reach someone to fix the problem.

•Thanks for the extra tips! I tried the BenefitsCal message thing before but never got a response. Going in person is so hard with my work schedule, which is why the phone trick was so helpful for me!

•That's unfortunately common with the BenefitsCal messages - they're often overlooked. If you ever do need to go in person but can't due to work, you can request an accommodation for an appointment outside regular hours. They don't advertise this option but they're required to provide reasonable accommodations.

•I know exactly how you feel. I just discovered a service called Claimyr that's been a lifesaver for getting through to CalWORKs. It basically waits on hold for you and calls you when a real person answers. I was skeptical but I tried it last month when my homeless assistance application was pending for weeks and I needed to know if I was approved. The service called me back in about 40 minutes with an actual caseworker on the line! You can see how it works at claimyr.com or check the demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Seriously changed my life - no more wasting my whole day on hold.

I think this time trick works because it's during the shift change! My sister works for DPSS (not in benefits though) and she says they have the early shift that starts at 7 and the regular shift at 8, with some overlap. So calling during that overlap time means both shifts of workers might be available. BTW another tip - if you're calling about Welfare to Work specifically, there's a separate number in most counties just for WTW issues. It often has shorter wait times than the main CalWORKs line. Ask your worker for it next time you get through!

•Thats actually really helpful to know about the separate WTW number since thats exactly my issue! Do you know if theres a special number for childcare too? Im having problems with getting my childcare payments approved for my summer classes.

•Yes! Childcare has its own division in most counties. Usually called the Child Care Program or Alternative Payment Program. They handle all the Stage 1 childcare for CalWORKs. If you call the main line and ask specifically for the childcare unit, they should transfer you. They're usually much less busy than the regular eligibility workers.

Update: just wanted to let everyone know I tried this again today (called at 7:57am on Wednesday) to ask about adding my newborn to my case and it worked again! Only waited about 15 minutes this time. They said they needed my baby's birth certificate, which I already submitted through BenefitsCal but they didn't process it yet. The worker was able to find it in the system and process my case update while I was on the phone. So the early morning trick is working consistently at least in my county!

This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing! I've been struggling to reach someone about my case for over a month now. My benefits got suspended because they said I didn't report my part-time job income, but I DID report it on my SAR7 form back in January. I've been calling every day during lunch breaks at work but can never get through. I'm definitely going to try the 7:57 AM trick tomorrow morning - I'll have to wake up extra early but it's worth it if I can finally get this mess sorted out. My kids need their benefits restored ASAP. Did you have all your paperwork ready when you called, or were they able to look everything up in the system?

•I had my case number ready and knew the basic details of my problem, but they were able to look up most everything in the system! For your situation with the SAR7 income reporting, they should be able to see when you submitted it and what income you reported. Just have your case number handy and maybe the exact date you submitted the SAR7 if you remember. The worker I talked to was really helpful and could see all my recent submissions. Hope the early morning trick works for you too - dealing with suspended benefits is so stressful especially with kids!
