Does CalFresh have a time limit like CalWORKs 48-month Cash Aid limit?

I've been getting CalWORKs Cash Aid for about a year and a half, and I know there's that 48-month lifetime limit (I thought it was 60 months but my worker said California is 48). But I'm confused about CalFresh (food stamps) - does it have a time limit too? Will my food benefits run out after a certain number of months like Cash Aid does? I'm a single mom with two kids and I'm worried about what happens when my Cash Aid eventually runs out. Will I lose food benefits at the same time? Thanks for any help understanding this!

CalFresh does NOT have a time limit for families with children! The 48-month limit only applies to CalWORKs cash aid. You can continue receiving CalFresh as long as you meet the income and resource requirements, regardless of how long you've been on the program. There is a time limit for CalFresh, but it ONLY applies to "ABAWDs" - Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (adults 18-49 who don't have children and aren't disabled). They're limited to 3 months of CalFresh in a 36-month period unless they meet work requirements or qualify for exemptions. Since you have children, you don't need to worry about any time limits for your food benefits!

Thank you so much for explaining that! What a relief to know my food benefits won't time out. Do you know if I need to do anything differently with my CalFresh when my Cash Aid eventually reaches the time limit? Will I need to reapply or will it just continue?

what the other person said is right!! i was sooo confused about this too when i first got benefits. the cash aid has the 48 month thing but CalFresh keeps going as long as u qualify! i hit my cash time limit last year but still get food benefits for me & my kids. 👍

Actually I think the ABAWD rules are suspended right now in most counties because of high unemployment? My brother doesn't have kids but he's been on CalFresh for like 2 years straight with no job... they would have cut him off if there was a 3 month limit, right??

Just want to add that when your CalWORKs does time out, your income will be lower (since you won't get cash aid anymore), which could actually make your CalFresh benefits INCREASE. So make sure you report when your cash aid ends - you might get more food benefits! Also, there are some extensions to the 48-month CalWORKs limit that might apply to you: - If you're disabled - If you're caring for a disabled family member - If you're a victim of domestic violence - If you're over 60 - If you're living in an area with high unemployment (24-month extension) Worth asking your worker if any extensions might apply to your situation.

I had no idea my food benefits might go up when cash aid ends! That's really helpful to know. I don't think any of those extensions apply to me unfortunately, but I'm going to ask about the high unemployment one just in case. Thank you!

Your post reminds me exactly of my situation from last year!!! My CalWORKs ended after I hit my time limit but my CalFresh actually went UP by like $87/month because my overall income was less. Just remember that you will need to recertify for CalFresh every 12 months even after CalWORKs ends. I almost lost my food benefits because I thought everything would end together and didn't open my SAR7 form. The county doesn't do a great job explaining how separate these programs actually are.

That's good to know about recertification! I've been turning everything in together and didn't realize they're completely separate programs. I'll make sure to keep track of my CalFresh dates separately.

If u cant get through to ur worker to ask questions try Claimyr. I was trying to call my worker for 2 WEEKS to ask about my benefit time limits and never got through. Someone told me about claimyr.com and they got me through to a real person in like 20 mins! They have a video that shows how it works here: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE its worth it when u really need to talk to someone and cant get through the phone system.

Does this actually work?? I've called the CalWORKs office like 50 times and ALWAYS get disconnected. This would be soooo helpful if it actually gets you through to a real person.

One more thing to be aware of: when your CalWORKs ends after the 48-month time limit, you'll still qualify for Medi-Cal. The county should automatically transition you to what's called "Transitional Medi-Cal" which lasts for 12 months after Cash Aid ends. After that, you'll likely qualify for regular Medi-Cal based on income. So you won't lose healthcare coverage either!

Thank you for this information! I was worried about medical coverage too, so this is another relief. I appreciate everyone's help - I understand the programs much better now!

i thought cash aid was 60 months too!!! when did it change to 48?????

It's been 48 months in California since around 2011 when they reduced it from 60 months due to budget cuts. The federal TANF program is 60 months, but states can set lower limits. Some states have limits as low as 24 months!
