Confused about reporting CalWORKs income to EDD - anyone know the correct way?
I started working part-time last month while still receiving Cash Aid, and now I'm completely confused about how to report my wages to EDD. I already reported my income change to my CalWORKs worker on my SAR7, but I got some letter from EDD asking about income reporting too? Are these two completely separate things? Do I need to report my earnings to both CalWORKs AND EDD? The letter mentions something about quarterly reporting but I can't make sense of it. My CalWORKs worker is impossible to reach by phone and I don't want to mess anything up that could affect my benefits. Has anyone dealt with this before?

These are two completely different systems! CalWORKs is through the county and EDD (Employment Development Department) handles unemployment benefits and employer tax contributions. You definitely need to report your income to both if you're receiving benefits from both. For CalWORKs: Report on your SAR7 and whenever you go over your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) For EDD: If you're receiving Unemployment Insurance, you report weekly when you certify for benefits If you're not receiving unemployment benefits but EDD is still asking about your income, it's probably for tax purposes since employers report wages to EDD every quarter. Check if the letter is asking about your work history or tax information.

•Thank you! I'm not on unemployment, just Cash Aid and CalFresh. So I'm confused why EDD is involved at all? The letter mentioned something about reporting wages for my job... so maybe it's a tax thing? But I thought that was all handled through my W-2 at the end of the year... this is so confusing 😫

i had something similar happen when i started my job last year. turned out my employer didn't file something right with EDD and thats why they were contacting me. might not be related to ur calworks at all, could be your employeer messed up some paperwork

•That makes sense! I should probably talk to my manager about it then. I was worried I was going to lose my Cash Aid over this somehow.

I work as an employment specialist who helps CalWORKs recipients with job placement, and I can clear this up for you. EDD and CalWORKs are completely separate systems. EDD collects payroll taxes from employers and administers unemployment insurance. They sometimes send verification letters to workers when there are discrepancies in what your employer reported. CalWORKs (through your county office) handles your Cash Aid benefits and requires income reporting through the SAR7 form every six months (or when you exceed your IRT). If you got a letter from EDD but aren't receiving unemployment benefits, it's most likely either: 1. Your employer reported your wages incorrectly 2. There's a question about your eligibility for state disability or paid family leave 3. It could be related to tax withholding verification You should definitely respond to the EDD letter following their instructions. It won't affect your CalWORKs as long as you're properly reporting your income to your county worker.

•This is SO helpful! Thank you for explaining so clearly. The letter does mention verification of wages, so it sounds like it's probably option #1. I'll call my employer's HR department tomorrow.

Okay but make sure you ARE reporting your wages properly to CalWORKs too! They will hit you with an overpayment SO FAST if you mess that up. I thought I was doing everything right and still got slapped with a $3,800 overpayment because I didn't report when I went over my IRT that one time. Now they take money out of my monthly benefit to pay it back. It's a nightmare!!

•Oh no, that's scary! I've been reporting everything on my SAR7, but I'm not sure what my IRT is... I need to check my approval letter. Thanks for the warning!

everyone is making this way too complicated lol. just call EDD and ask them directly why they sent you the letter? they can explain exactly what they need from you. way easier than guessing

•I tried calling EDD three times already but I keep getting stuck in the automated system or it disconnects me. Their phone system is even worse than the county's!

Speaking of calling, have you tried using Claimyr to get through to EDD? I was having the same issue last month - kept getting disconnected or waiting forever. Someone on this forum recommended Claimyr.com and it was a game changer. They basically wait on hold for you and call you back when an actual person is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Might be worth it just to get a clear answer about what EDD needs from you. Plus you can ask them to explain how the reporting works so you don't have problems in the future.

•I've never heard of this before! Does it really work? I've spent so much time on hold with both CalWORKs and EDD that I'm willing to try anything at this point.

•Yes, it definitely works! I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of hold time. You still talk directly to the EDD rep yourself - Claimyr just handles the waiting part and calls you when someone picks up. Totally worth it when you need answers quickly.

the exact same thng happened to me!!! turns out it was bcuz i had worked for a different employer earlier in the year and then switched jobs. the first employer reported something wrong so EDD was trying to figure out my correct wages. had nothing to do with my calworks at all!!! BUT make sure ur reporting to calworks correctly still cuz thats a whole seperate thing. ur IRT should be on ur approval notice and if u go over that amount u gotta report it within 10 days not just on ur SAR7

•That makes sense! I did work at a different place earlier this year for just a few weeks. And yes, I'm going to double check my IRT today so I don't mess up my CalWORKs reporting. Thanks!

One more thing I should clarify - when you report income to CalWORKs, you need to provide pay stubs as verification. Make sure you're keeping ALL your pay stubs because sometimes the county will ask for them even months later if there's a discrepancy. For your EDD situation, whatever letter you received should have a contact number specific to your case. If you're having trouble getting through on their main line, try looking for a direct extension or specific unit number on the letter they sent you. Sometimes those alternative numbers have much shorter wait times.

•Thank you again! I've been taking pictures of my pay stubs with my phone just in case I lose the physical copies. And you're right - there is a specific extension on the letter. I'll try calling that directly tomorrow.
