How to report partner moving out & new job to CalWORKs? Household change urgent help needed
Hi everyone, I really need some advice. My partner just moved out last week and they were the only one bringing in income for our household (me & my 2 kids). I've been approved for Cash Aid for a few months but now everything's changing at once. I just got hired at Target (starting next week) and I know I need to report both these changes to CalWORKs but I'm confused about the process. Do I need to report the job first? Or my partner leaving? What paperwork do I need to bring to my worker? I'm worried because the cash aid amount might change and I need to make sure I can pay rent next month. How quickly do I need to report these changes? This is my first time dealing with household composition changes since getting benefits.

You need to report BOTH changes within 10 days. Don't wait! Your partner moving out is actually good news for your CalWORKs case since their income won't count against your household anymore. For reporting your partner leaving, you'll need to: 1. Fill out the CW 2.1 form (Household Composition/Address Change) 2. Provide some kind of proof they moved (new lease, utility bill with their name at new address, or written statement) For your new job, you'll need: 1. Job verification letter or offer letter showing start date and pay rate 2. If you already have a paystub, bring that too Actually, your benefits will likely INCREASE since your partner's income is no longer counted. But you need to report both changes right away to avoid any overpayments that you'd have to pay back later.

•Thank you so much! Where do I get the CW 2.1 form? Can I download it online or do I have to physically go to the office? I'm worried because I don't have anything with his name at a new address yet since he just left.

when my bf moved out last yr all i did was call my worker and tell her and she just took him off my case. didnt need to bring nethin in. but maybe diff counties do things diffrent. i would just call ur worker its easier

•I agree with calling, but I'd caution that in some counties they'll want proof. I tried to do it by phone in San Bernardino and they marked my changes as "pending verification" until I brought in some kind of documentation. So frustrating!!!

You absolutely need to report both changes within 10 days or you could end up with an overpayment that you'll have to pay back. For your partner moving out: - If you can't get proof of their new address, you can submit a signed statement from your partner stating they've moved out and are no longer part of your household. - You'll need to complete the CW 2.1 form (ask your worker for it or go to the office). For your new job: - Bring your offer letter with start date, pay rate, and expected hours. - Your income will affect your grant amount, but since your partner's income was likely higher, your benefits might actually increase. - Make sure to ask about childcare assistance through CalWORKs since you're working now! If your partner was the payee for the case, you'll also need to be set up as the new payee. Don't wait on this - some changes can take time to process through the system.

•Thank you. I've been trying to get through to my worker for 2 days but keep getting the automated system. Is there a direct line I can call? I'm stressed about missing that 10-day window.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach your worker? I was in a similar situation (partner left, new job) and spent days trying to get through. I used claimyr.com and they got me connected to a real person at the CalWORKs office in like 20 minutes. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE This change is definitely reportable because it's both a household composition change AND an income change, which will affect your benefit amount significantly. I wish I'd known about the service sooner instead of stressing for days trying to reach someone.

•I've never heard of this! Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything. Did they adjust your benefits right away after reporting?

Yes it worked for me! They got me through to a worker who helped process my changes. After I reported everything, it took about 2 weeks for my benefits to be recalculated. They sent me a Notice of Action showing the new benefit amount. Since my partner's income was no longer counted, my grant went up even though I had started working part-time.

DONT WAIT to report!! i waited too long when my ex moved out (3 weeks cause i was busy) and they gave me an OVERPAYMENT of $740!!! im still paying it back 😩 they take it out of my monthly cash aid which SUCKS. also remember you need to report job income on your SAR 7 form even after you tell them about getting the job. the whole system is designed to TRIP YOU UP i swear!

•This is important advice! The 10-day reporting requirement is separate from your SAR 7 semi-annual report. You need to do BOTH. Report these changes now within 10 days, then also include the information again on your next SAR 7 form. Also, when you get your first paycheck, check if you're still under the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT). Your worker should have sent you a notice with your specific IRT amount. If your income goes over that amount, you have to report it within 10 days even if it's not time for your SAR 7.

You can also report the changes online through BenefitsCal if you have an account set up. That way you have documentation that you reported within the 10-day timeframe. I always take screenshots of everything I submit online because the county "lost" my reports twice before.

Good point about childcare assistance! Since you're starting a new job, make sure to ask about: 1. CalWORKs childcare benefits 2. Work expense deductions (they don't count all your income against you) 3. Earned Income Disregard (first $225 + 50% of remaining earnings are disregarded) Your benefits might actually increase for a while even with your new job, especially since your partner's income is no longer counted in the household.

•Thank you all for the help! I finally got through to a worker today. They're sending me the forms and I have an appointment next week to bring everything in. They said I should apply for childcare right away since there can be a waiting period. This has been so stressful but I feel better now knowing what to do.
