Can LA County CalWORKs give extra housing money during pregnancy? Not Section 8, just more cash

I'm 5 months pregnant and just got approved for Cash Aid in LA County last week. My rent is $1,850 and it's really tight trying to make ends meet with what I'm getting. I heard there might be some kind of extra money they can give you for housing costs during pregnancy? Not talking about Section 8 (I know that has a long waitlist) but something that would just add more money directly onto my EBT card for housing. My caseworker wasn't very helpful when I asked - she just kept saying to apply for Section 8. Does anyone know if CalWORKs has some kind of special housing allowance for pregnant women or if they can increase your grant amount because of high rent? I'm trying to save up before the baby comes.

Yes, there's a housing supplement program in LA County called the Housing Support Program (HSP) that can help with rental assistance. It's specifically for CalWORKs families who are pregnant or have children. You might also qualify for the Homeless Assistance Program if you're at risk of losing your housing. Ask your worker specifically about the HSP program - some workers don't mention it unless you ask by name. Make sure to emphasize that you're concerned about housing stability with the baby coming.

Thank you!! I've never heard of HSP before. Do you know if they deposit that money onto your EBT card or is it separate? Also how much extra help can they give? My caseworker seems new and doesn't explain things very well.

they dont add xtra for being pregnant til the baby comes, then ur aid goes up. but u can apply for homeless assistance if ur behind on rent or about to be evicted. also u should check if ur eligible for the $30 pregnancy special needs payment each month. its not much but its something!!

Oh I didn't know about the $30 pregnancy special needs payment! That would help a little bit at least. Do I need to fill out a special form for that or just tell my worker?

Congrats on the baby! I was in your situation last year. Ask about the Pregnancy Special Needs (PSN) payment - it's small but helps. Also get on WIC right away if you haven't already!!

There are a few options you should look into: 1. Pregnancy Special Needs (PSN) payment - $30 extra per month once you verify your pregnancy 2. Housing Support Program (HSP) - This is separate from your regular Cash Aid and can help with rental assistance, but there's usually a waitlist 3. Homeless Assistance Program - If you're at risk of eviction or homelessness, you might qualify for temporary help 4. Diaper Support - Once your baby is born, you can get $30/month for diapers until the child is 3 The regular Cash Aid amount won't increase until your baby is born and you add them to your case. Make sure you're also getting CalFresh (food stamps) and have applied for WIC. Your worker should have explained all these programs to you. Unfortunately, some workers are overloaded with cases and don't always provide complete information.

This is SUPER helpful, thank you! I'm going to ask about all of these. I do have CalFresh and just applied for WIC last week. I didn't know about the diaper money either!

I HATE how they don't tell us about all the programs we qualify for!!! I was pregnant last year and didn't find out about the pregnancy special needs payment until my 8th month. They should give that money retroactive but they wont. Make sure you ask for it specifically and get it in writing.

Have you tried calling your worker to specifically ask about the Housing Support Program? I know it can be impossible to get through to LA County DPSS by phone - I once spent 3 days trying. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with my worker and it got me through in about 10 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Basically they wait on hold for you then call you when a real person picks up. It was the only way I could actually talk to someone about my housing situation before my eviction notice came.

Oh wow I've never heard of that service! I'll check it out. I've been calling for days and either get disconnected or told the wait is over 2 hours. Thanks for the tip!

One more thing - the CalWORKs housing supplement programs are separate from your regular Cash Aid. They won't show up as extra money on your EBT card. The HSP program typically works with your landlord directly or provides a separate payment method. The $30 Pregnancy Special Needs payment WILL show up on your EBT card along with your regular grant amount. Also, make sure you report your pregnancy on your next SAR7 or SAWS2 form if you haven't already done so. This ensures your case is properly coded for the pregnancy special needs payment.

Thank you for explaining! I think I submitted a pregnancy verification form when I applied but I'll double check. And good to know about the housing help being separate.

honey nothin with LA County is ever simple lol. i been on aid 4 years and theres always some program nobody tells u about. i found out about HSP from another mom at WIC, not from my worker. make sure u bring verification of pregnancy dated within last 30 days when u ask about the $30 extra or theyll make u get another one

forgot to mention u might qualify for emergency calfresh too if ur in a bad spot. and once baby comes ur calworks goes up and u get the diaper $$ too. hang in there!

I want to clarify something about HSP (Housing Support Program) since there seems to be some confusion. HSP is specifically designed for families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. If you're currently housed but struggling with your rent, you might instead qualify for the Permanent Housing Assistance (PHA) program through CalWORKs. PHA can provide help with move-in costs or temporary rental subsidies for up to 2 years. You need to be working with a case manager who can help determine your eligibility. Some counties also have their own specific housing programs for CalWORKs recipients. Definitely get clarification about which specific program you might qualify for - the names and requirements can get confusing.

Thank you - I didn't realize there were so many different housing programs! I'm going to bring a list of everything mentioned here when I talk to my worker. Really appreciate everyone's help!

I'm also pregnant and went through this exact situation with LA County CalWORKs! Here's what I learned: definitely ask about the Pregnancy Special Needs payment ($30/month) - you need to bring recent pregnancy verification from your doctor. For housing help, ask specifically about both HSP and PHA programs since they have different requirements. I also found out about something called the Cal-Learn program if you're under 19 or in school - it can provide additional support. Don't give up if your worker doesn't know about these programs - I had to speak to a supervisor to get proper information. Also, start preparing your documents now for when the baby comes because your grant will increase once you add them to your case. Good luck mama!

This is such great advice! I'm also new to navigating all these programs and it's overwhelming trying to figure out what you qualify for. Can you tell me more about the Cal-Learn program? I'm 22 so probably too old for that but I'm curious what kind of additional support it provides. Also, when you say prepare documents for when the baby comes - what specific paperwork should I be gathering now? I want to make sure I have everything ready so there's no delay in getting the grant increase. Thank you for sharing your experience!
