CalWORKs EBT theft reimbursement approved same-day in LA County - success story!
Has anyone had their CalWORKs Cash Aid stolen from their EBT card recently? My entire March payment ($1,240) disappeared from my account last week. Someone made 3 large withdrawals at ATMs I've never been to. I discovered it Friday night when I tried to buy groceries and my card got declined! I almost had a panic attack in the store. I went to the DPSS office yesterday morning as soon as they opened. The worker had me fill out the "EBT Cash Aid Benefit Theft Claim" form and said it would take 10-30 days for them to investigate and possibly reimburse me. I have rent due NEXT WEEK and my landlord isn't exactly understanding about late payments. Does anyone know if there's a way to speed up this process? Has anyone actually gotten their stolen benefits back faster than 10 days? I'm in LA County if that matters. This is so stressful - I have no idea how I'm going to make it through the month without this money.

I went through this exact situation in January! YES - you can absolutely get it processed faster. DO NOT just wait around for them to process the form. You need to call the LA County DPSS directly (not the EBT customer service) and explain that this is an emergency situation because you have rent coming due. Be prepared to spend some time on hold though - it took me about 1.5 hours to get through to a live person. When you get through, ask to speak with a supervisor about your EBT theft claim. Explain that you've already filed the paperwork in person but need emergency processing due to your rent situation. They can expedite it and often get the funds reloaded within 24-48 hours if they determine it's a valid theft. Also - make sure to change your PIN number right away if you haven't already done that!

•Thank you SO MUCH for this info! I'll call them first thing tomorrow morning. Did they ask you a lot of questions about how it happened? I honestly have no idea how someone got my card info since I always keep it with me. I'm worried they won't believe me...

•CalFresh and Cash Aid theft claims are actually handled differently! For CalFresh (food benefits), federal regulations require a longer investigation period. Cash Aid theft can often be processed faster because it falls under different rules. But definitely call for either type of theft - sometimes just getting your case in front of a supervisor can help speed things up.

I recommend checking if you have any paystubs or other proof of recent ATM withdrawals you DID make. They asked me for that when processing my claim because they compare it to your normal withdrawal patterns. It helps them prove the suspicious transactions weren't you. Also take screenshots of the fraudulent transactions showing the ATM locations if you can still see them in your account history.

•That's great advice, thank you! I can see the locations in my BenefitsCal account - they're all in a part of town I never go to, so that should help my case.

Call them RIGHT NOW, don't wait. I had $890 stolen in December and waited 3 weeks with no update. Finally got so desperate I called the main line, waited on hold FOREVER, and when I finally got through they said my claim had been sitting unprocessed the whole time! They expedited it once I explained my situation and I had the money back in 2 days. The EBT theft is getting so bad in LA County lately, they're actually starting to take it more seriously. Also, when you do get your money back, transfer it to a bank account immediately if you can. Don't leave it sitting on the EBT card where it could get stolen again.

•I work at a nonprofit that helps people with public benefits issues, and this is excellent advice. We're seeing a huge increase in EBT theft cases across California, especially in LA County. The "store it in a bank account" tip is crucial. As soon as benefits are deposited, transfer them to a more secure account if possible. Also, check your EBT balance frequently so you catch theft early - the sooner you report it, the easier the investigation process usually is. One more tip: if calling doesn't work well for you, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that calls DPSS for you and holds your place in line, then calls you back when a worker picks up. A lot of our clients use it when they need to reach someone at DPSS but can't stay on hold for hours. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE

the system is SO broken!!!! i had $1500 stolen in november and they DENIED my claim saying i must have given someone my pin!!! i NEVER gave anyone my pin, the thieves are using skimmers at stores and atms to steal the card info. i had to appeal and it took TWO MONTHS to get my money back. the whole time my worker acted like i was lying. such bs how they treat us!!!!

•This happened to my sister too! She had to go through the whole appeal process. Do you know if there's a specific form for appealing a denied claim? I want to have everything ready just in case they try to deny mine too.

•yea its called a "request for state hearing" form. you can get it online or at the office. you only got 90 days to appeal after they deny you so dont wait!!! and KEEP CALLING THEM every single day until they fix it!!!!

I just went through this whole process last week! Called the LA County DPSS main line after filing my theft claim in person, and the worker was actually really helpful. She expedited my claim after I explained my rent situation. Got my money back in 36 hours! One thing that I think helped - I had filed a police report online about the theft before calling DPSS. The worker said that showed I was serious about the claim and wasn't just trying to get extra benefits. You can file a report online with LAPD if the theft happened in LA city, or with Sheriff's dept if it was elsewhere in the county. Good luck! The system can actually work when you get the right person on the phone.

•Update: I called this morning after being on hold for almost 2 hours (!) and finally got through to someone. They initially said the same thing about 10-30 days, but when I mentioned my rent was due and I had kids to feed, they transferred me to a supervisor. The supervisor reviewed my claim on the spot and APPROVED it! They're reloading my benefits TODAY!! I'm so relieved I could cry. Thanks everyone for the advice to call instead of just waiting - it really worked!

•that's awesome!!! so happy for u!! did u have to provide any extra evidence or they just approved it after looking at what u already submitted?

•They just needed to verify my identity over the phone with some security questions, and they looked at the claim form I'd already submitted in person. The supervisor said they could see the transactions were at ATMs I'd never used before and that made it pretty clear it was theft. She also recommended I change my PIN and check my balance more often, which I've already done!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm a case worker at a different county and want to add that documenting everything is super important for these claims. Take photos of your EBT card to show it's still in your possession, save screenshots of the fraudulent transactions, and if possible, get receipts from legitimate purchases you made around the same time to show your normal spending pattern. Also, for anyone reading this - if your card gets compromised, call the EBT customer service line IMMEDIATELY to freeze the card (1-877-328-9677). This prevents additional fraudulent transactions while you're working on getting the theft claim processed. You can request a replacement card at the same time. The fact that Ethan got same-day approval shows the system CAN work when you advocate for yourself. Don't be afraid to escalate to supervisors - they often have more authority to expedite emergency situations like this!

•This is really valuable advice from someone who works in the system! I had no idea about calling to freeze the card immediately - that could have saved me from the additional withdrawals that happened after I first noticed something was wrong. The documentation tip is spot on too. I wish I had taken screenshots earlier, but luckily I was still able to access the transaction history when I needed it. It's so helpful to hear from a case worker's perspective on what actually helps speed up these claims. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

This is such an encouraging success story! I'm so glad you were able to get your benefits restored the same day - that gives me hope for others dealing with this nightmare. I wanted to add something that might help future readers: if you're having trouble getting through to LA County DPSS by phone, try calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch hours (around 12-1pm) when call volume might be lower. I've noticed those times tend to have shorter hold times. Also, for anyone who might be reading this thread in the future - document EVERYTHING. Keep notes of who you spoke with, what time you called, reference numbers they give you, etc. If you have to call multiple times, this information can be really helpful when explaining your situation to the next person. The EBT theft problem is getting worse everywhere, not just LA County. I've heard similar stories from friends in other parts of California. It's so frustrating that we have to fight this hard just to get back money that was stolen from us, but threads like this prove that persistence really does pay off. Thanks for sharing your experience and helping others navigate this broken system!

•This is such great advice about the timing of calls! I wish I had known about calling during lunch hours - I called at 10am and was on hold forever. The documentation tip is so important too. I actually started a little notebook to track all my interactions with DPSS after this happened, including dates, times, and names of people I spoke with. It's already come in handy when I had to call about a separate issue last week and could reference my previous conversations. You're absolutely right that this is a widespread problem. My neighbor in Riverside County had the same thing happen to her CalFresh benefits last month. It's scary how common EBT theft has become. But seeing success stories like Ethan's gives me hope that the system can work when you know how to navigate it. Thanks for the practical tips about call timing - I'll definitely remember that for the future!

Wow, this is exactly the kind of success story we need to hear more of! I'm so glad you got your benefits back the same day, Ethan. As someone who's been navigating the CalWORKs system for a while, I know how stressful these situations can be. I wanted to add a tip that helped me when I had a similar issue last year - if you're ever in this situation again, ask the DPSS worker for a "case action notice" or some kind of written confirmation that your claim has been approved and processed. Sometimes there can be delays between when they say it's approved and when the funds actually show up on your card. Having that documentation can help if you need to follow up. Also, for anyone else reading this thread - consider setting up text alerts for your EBT account if you haven't already. You'll get notified immediately when transactions happen, which can help you catch theft faster. You can usually set this up through your state's EBT website or by calling the customer service number. Thanks for sharing your experience and all the great advice you got from everyone here. This community is really valuable for helping each other navigate these challenges!

•This is such helpful additional advice! The text alerts tip is brilliant - I had no idea that was an option. I just looked it up and was able to set them up through the BenefitsCal website. It only took a few minutes and now I'll get notified immediately if there are any transactions on my card. That peace of mind is worth so much after going through this theft experience. The documentation tip about getting a "case action notice" is really smart too. I didn't think to ask for written confirmation when they approved my claim over the phone. Fortunately my benefits did show up when they said they would, but I'll definitely remember that for any future interactions with DPSS. It's amazing how much more manageable these situations become when you have the right information and support from people who've been through it. This whole thread has been like a masterclass in navigating EBT theft claims! Thanks for adding even more useful tips to help the next person who finds themselves in this awful situation.

This thread is incredibly helpful and gives me so much hope! I'm dealing with EBT theft right now too - someone got $980 of my CalWORKs benefits last weekend. I filed the claim form on Monday but was dreading the 10-30 day wait they told me about. Reading about everyone's experiences, especially Ethan's same-day success, has convinced me to call tomorrow morning instead of just waiting. I'm going to try calling right at 8am like someone suggested, and I'll definitely ask to speak with a supervisor if they give me the standard "wait 10-30 days" response. One question - did anyone have success getting emergency food assistance while waiting for their theft claim to be processed? I know there's supposed to be some kind of expedited SNAP benefits for emergencies, but I'm not sure if EBT theft qualifies. My CalFresh is almost gone too and I have two kids to feed. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and advice. It's so frustrating that we have to become experts in navigating this system just to get back money that was stolen from us, but at least we can help each other through it!

•I'm so sorry you're going through this too, Miguel! Yes, definitely call first thing at 8am - that seems to be the best time based on everyone's experiences here. About emergency food assistance - you should absolutely ask about that when you call! There's something called "expedited SNAP" that can get you emergency food benefits within 7 days if you meet certain criteria (like having less than $150 in monthly income and less than $100 in cash/bank accounts, OR if your housing costs are more than your income plus cash on hand). EBT theft can definitely put you in that emergency situation. When you call DPSS tomorrow, mention that you have kids and ask specifically about expedited CalFresh benefits while your theft claim is being processed. The worst they can say is no, but many counties will help with emergency food assistance when benefits have been stolen, especially when children are involved. Also, if you haven't already, check if there are any local food banks or pantries near you that can help bridge the gap. I know it's not ideal, but it can help while you're waiting for everything to get sorted out. Good luck with your call tomorrow - keep us posted on how it goes! We're all rooting for you to get the same kind of quick resolution that Ethan did.
