My son has had the same card for 3 yrs now and they just reload it each month. BUT when we moved counties, they issued a new card for some reason? I was confused about that. Anyone else have to get new cards when moving between counties in CA?
Yes, moving between counties typically triggers a new card issuance because your case is transferred to the new county's system. Each county in California administers CalWORKs somewhat independently (though under the same state rules), and they often need to close your case in the old county and open a new one in the new county. This is why people sometimes experience benefit delays when moving between counties.
make sure when u get the replacement u activate it right away!! my benfits got stollen once cuz i left the new card sitting in pile of mail for 2 weeks n someone must of took it from my mailbox!!! calworks wouldnt replace the stolen money either they said i was negligent
That's horrible! I'll definitely activate it immediately and check my mail carefully. Did you ever get any of that money back?
I used Claimyr on a Friday evening once and yes, they connected me to the after-hours emergency services for CalWORKs! They can't solve everything on weekends, but emergency benefit theft actually does qualify for urgent response in many counties. It depends on your county though. When I used it, I got through to someone who could flag my account for urgent review first thing Monday morning, which meant I got help immediately when the offices opened instead of waiting all day. They also issued a temporary emergency voucher that I could use at certain stores until my new card arrived.
One more thing I forgot to mention - while you're waiting for your Cash Aid to be replaced, make sure to call your landlord ASAP and explain the situation. Ask if they can give you a few days extension without late fees. Some landlords will work with you if you're proactive about communicating the problem. Also, bring a printout of your EBT transaction history showing the suspicious transactions when you meet with your worker on Monday. The more documentation you have, the faster they can process your claim. And definitely mention your immediate need for rent money - they can sometimes process emergency assistance within 3 business days for housing emergencies.
I just called my landlord and left a message explaining the situation. Fingers crossed they'll be understanding. I'm printing out all my EBT transactions right now so I'm prepared. The fraudulent withdrawals all happened in a city 30 miles away that I've never even been to, so hopefully that makes it obvious it wasn't me.
Update: I finally got through today after calling repeatedly this morning! They scheduled my interview for next Tuesday. The worker said they're backlogged because of staffing issues. Thanks everyone for the advice - especially about the expedited interview! I mentioned my financial situation and that's why they're getting me in next week instead of later.
Thank you! I have most of those ready. I don't have contact info for my youngest's father though - will that delay things? We haven't been in contact for over a year.
You can request a "good cause" exemption from the child support cooperation requirement if you don't have contact with the father or if cooperation would put you or your children at risk. You'll need to fill out a CW 51 form explaining your situation. This won't delay your benefits as long as you're willing to sign the form stating you have good cause for not providing the information. They may ask for some details about why you don't have contact.
When I added my teenager back to my case last year, I had to specifically ask for the teen forms. They gave me a bunch of papers about school attendance requirements and how they check with the school district. Maybe they just forgot to give you those forms? It's worth calling to ask what happened.
I just want to add that when you call about adding your 17-year-old to your case, specifically request that they add her retroactively to the date you initially requested to add all your children. Since this appears to be their error (not giving you the proper forms or instructions for your older child), they should correct it back to the original request date. Make sure to document everything - who you speak with, date and time, what they tell you. If they say they can't add her retroactively, ask to speak with a supervisor and explain that you were never informed about different requirements for your 17-year-old.

Quick question - did you have to do a new WTW plan with Riverside county? When I transferred, they made me come in for a whole new orientation and sign a new WTW plan even though I was already in compliance with my old county. Just wondering if that's standard or if I got extra steps for some reason.

•They actually mentioned that! They said once my benefits are active again, I'll need to attend a WTW orientation within 2 weeks. I have an exemption for having a child under 2 (my youngest is 18 months) but they still want me to come in and update everything. Sounds like it's standard procedure for all ICTs.

•If you're planning to move counties, start the process early. Notify your current county at least 30-45 days before your planned move, even if that's earlier than required. This gives both counties more time to process everything. Also, immediately after notifying your current county, call the new county and ask for their specific ICT procedures - some counties have special ICT workers or processes. Being proactive can help minimize gaps in benefits.
