When will CalFresh emergency allotment end? Confused about extra EBT benefits in 2025
Been getting extra money on my EBT card for like 3 months now. Nobody told me why or how long it's gonna last. My caseworker never mentioned anything about extra benefits when I recertified in January. I'm not complaining but I need to know if this is permanent or if they're gonna suddenly stop it. Anyone else getting more than their regular amount? Don't wanna budget counting on this money if it's gonna disappear next month.

The extra benefits you're getting aren't emergency allotments - those ended back in March 2023 after the COVID public health emergency stopped. What you're probably seeing is the new Supplemental CalFresh Amount that started in January 2025 for qualifying households. It's part of California's expanded nutrition assistance program, but it's ONLY for households with specific situations (seniors, disabled members, or families with young children). Check your BenefitsCal account - there should be a notice explaining why your benefits increased.

•Wait really? I didn't get any notice but my son just turned 5 in December, maybe that's why? So this is permanent then? I'll check BenefitsCal tonight when I get home from work.

This happened to me too!!!! I got $320 more last month and $298 extra this month but totally different amounts each time. I'm thinking it's a system glitch tbh because when I called the EBT customer service line they couldn't explain it. Anyone else think we might have to pay this back later??? 😬

•Be careful with unexpected benefit increases! Document everything and call your county worker directly. This happened to my cousin and it was an error - they ended up with a $1,200 overpayment they had to pay back. Always better to ask than assume it's correct.

this might b the increased benefit formula they talked about on the news. my neighbor works at the county and told me they updated the income thresholds and benefit amounts for all calfresh households starting this year cause of inflation. if ur income didnt change they mightve just updated ur benefits automatically

•Oh that makes sense actually. My income hasn't changed at all but prices on everything keep going up. So you think this is permanent?

There are NO "emergency allotments" or "extra EBT" in the CalFresh program for 2025. What you might be experiencing is one of these situations: 1. Income change recalculation - did your income decrease recently? 2. Household size change - did someone leave or join your household? 3. Deduction increase - did your rent/utilities increase or did you report new medical expenses? 4. Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) processing - benefits often change after processing your SAR7 5. California's new Supplemental Nutrition Benefit that started in January for certain households Check your most recent Notice of Action letter or your BenefitsCal account messages for the exact reason. If you can't find an explanation, call your county office.

•I think it might be that new California supplement thing but I never got a letter. I'll have to check BenefitsCal. Is there a way to see how long it will last?

omg its so annoying that they dont explain anything!!! i was getting random amounts too and when i finally got through to my worker after calling for THREE DAYS she said it was back benefits from when they miscalculated my utilities allowance from October to December. they're terrible at communicating!!! u might want to try that claimyr.com service - i finally got through to a real person using it. they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. i was skeptical but it actually connected me to a worker in like 20 minutes instead of being on hold forever

•THREE DAYS?! That's crazy but sounds about right lol. Thanks for the tip, I might try that service if I can't figure it out. Did they at least let you keep the extra money they gave you?

My brother works for social services (not in CA though) and said a lot of states are adjusting benefits right now because of the new federal SNAP calculations. The system is so outdated that sometimes these adjustments come through as separate deposits instead of just increasing your regular amount. It should even out in a few months.

•This is accurate. California is implementing the updated SNAP benefit calculation methodology which includes the standard medical deduction increase from $155 to $250 for seniors and disabled individuals. The system often shows these as separate deposits during the transition period.

dont call and ask about it!!! just take the money and be quiet lol. if u bring it to their attention they might realize its a mistake

•This is terrible advice. If it's an error and you knowingly spend benefits you weren't eligible for, you could face an Intentional Program Violation. Those can result in disqualification from the program for months or even years, plus repayment. Always verify unexpected benefit increases.

UPDATE: I finally logged into BenefitsCal and found a notice from January that I somehow missed. Turns out it IS that new California Supplemental Nutrition Benefit because I have a child under 6! It said this is ongoing as long as I remain eligible and my son is still under 6. Thanks everyone for your help! Sometimes the system actually works lol

•Great news! Yes, the California Supplemental Nutrition Benefit provides additional assistance for households with children under 6, seniors over 60, or disabled members. It's designed to help these vulnerable populations with rising food costs. Make sure to report any changes to your household composition or income on your SAR7 to keep receiving the correct benefit amount.

So glad you figured it out! This is exactly why I always tell people to check their BenefitsCal messages regularly - they send important notices there that are easy to miss. The California Supplemental Nutrition Benefit is a great program but they really need to do better at explaining it upfront. For anyone else reading this - if you have kids under 6, are over 60, or have a disability in your household, you might be eligible for this extra benefit too. It's not temporary like the old emergency allotments were, it's an ongoing program as long as you meet the criteria.

•This is such helpful info! I'm new to CalFresh and had no idea about all these different programs. My grandmother lives with us and she's 62 - does that mean we might qualify for the supplemental benefit too? I should probably check our BenefitsCal account but I'm still learning how to navigate everything. Thanks for breaking it down so clearly!
