Extra CalFresh deposit shows up in EBT app - will it impact my future benefits?

I'm totally confused right now. I just checked my EBT app and saw I got an extra CalFresh deposit of $275 yesterday, but I already got my regular benefits ($410) on the 10th like normal. I didn't request anything special and haven't had any changes in my household or income recently. Will this show up in the system for future months too? Like, will they think I'm getting this amount regularly now? I'm worried they'll reduce my next month's benefits thinking this was supposed to be my new normal amount. Has anyone had random extra deposits before? Should I call my caseworker about this or just use it without saying anything? I'm a single parent and definitely could use the extra food money, but don't want to mess up my regular benefits.

same thing happened to my sister last year! county never said anything and she just used it. nobody ever asked for it back lol

Did they reduce her benefits the next month though? That's what I'm worried about!

This is most likely a retroactive adjustment or benefit correction. The CalFresh system sometimes identifies that you were underpaid in a previous month and automatically issues the difference. It could be from a calculation error they discovered or from verification documents they processed late. This won't affect your future regular issuance amount unless there was also a change in your eligibility factors (income, household size, expenses, etc). You can check your EBT transaction history in the app to see if there's a description for the deposit. Sometimes it will say "adjustment" or "supplement." If you want peace of mind, you should call your county office to confirm, but these retroactive payments are fairly common and usually nothing to worry about.

Oh that makes sense! I did submit some childcare receipts a few months ago that they said they'd process. Maybe that's what it was. Thanks for explaining!

DONT CALL THEM!! they might realize it was a mistake and take it back!! just use it up quick before they notice lol

This is not good advice. If it truly was an error and not a legitimate adjustment, CalFresh can still establish an overpayment claim even months later. Using benefits you know might be issued in error could potentially be considered an intentional program violation, which carries more serious consequences than an inadvertent household error.

I work with CalFresh cases and can tell you this is almost certainly a retroactive adjustment. If you did provide new verification (like the childcare expenses you mentioned), they may have determined you were eligible for more benefits in previous months. The app won't tell you much - it just shows deposits - but if you log into BenefitsCal you might see notices explaining the adjustment. This won't affect your regular issuance schedule or amount. Future deposits will return to your regular amount unless there's been a change in your case. And contrary to what someone else suggested, you should never worry about using legitimate benefits you receive - if the county determined you were entitled to those funds, they're yours to use.

Thank you! I just checked BenefitsCal and found a notice from last week saying they processed my childcare expenses from February and March and were issuing a supplement! Mystery solved. I'm relieved this won't affect my regular amount going forward.

Have you gotten any mail from your county office? They're supposed to send a Notice of Action whenever there's a change to your benefits. I got an extra payment once and it was because they approved a benefits adjustment after I appealed a calculation error. I didn't see the letter until days after the deposit showed up. Check your mail pile!

That's a good point! I actually hadn't checked my mail in about a week. Just did and found the notice explaining everything. 👍

btw if u ever need to reach ur caseworker and cant get thru the phone lines try claimyr.com - i used it last month when i couldnt get anyone to pick up for 3 days and got through in like 15 min. they have a video showing how it works here https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 saved me so much frustration

Does that service actually work? I've spent hours on hold with Sacramento County and usually just give up. Might have to try this next time if it really gets you through that quick.

one time they gave me $900 extra and then took it back three months later when i wasnt expecting it and i had NO FOOD for like a week so BE CAREFUL. this system is so broken its not even funny. they will mess up and then blame you for their mistake.

If they establish an overpayment, you can request a repayment plan to avoid having a large amount recouped all at once. For active CalFresh cases, they typically can't reduce your monthly benefits by more than 10% for inadvertent errors. Always respond to overpayment notices immediately to set up manageable terms.

This just happened to me too! But mine was because I had reported my rent increase a few months ago and they finally processed it and gave me back benefits. Check your mail for a Notice of Action - it should explain exactly why you got the extra money. And no, it shouldn't affect your regular deposit schedule at all.

Thanks! I found the notice and you're right, it was a back payment for expenses they just processed. Glad to hear your experience was similar!
