Received EBT card but confused about uploading paystubs - already approved for CalFresh?
So I'm really confused about my CalFresh situation. We applied on June 12th and got interviewed by phone. The worker said they couldn't determine if we were approved yet and would mail us some verification forms. Here's the weird part - we never sent the forms back (life got crazy with my kid starting summer camp), but I just checked our mail yesterday and found an EBT card! We got $530 loaded on the card for our family of 3. I'm currently the only one working as my husband lost his job last month. The approval letter also mentioned something about my husband possibly qualifying for UIB (Unemployment Insurance Benefits?), but there was zero explanation about what that means or how to apply. Do I still need to upload my paystubs and send back those forms even though we already got approved and received benefits? The forms are asking the same questions they already asked during the interview. I don't want to mess up our benefits by not sending something important, but it seems redundant now that we have the card. Anyone dealt with this before?

•Oh no! I definitely don't want to get cut off. Did your cousin have to reapply completely or just send in the late paperwork?

The EBT card with benefits loaded means you've been conditionally approved, but you absolutely need to submit those verification forms ASAP. The county gave you benefits based on the information from your interview, but they still need documentation to verify what you told them. Most counties have a policy of providing one month of benefits while waiting for verification, but they'll discontinue your CalFresh benefits if they don't receive the required documents. I'd recommend uploading your paystubs and completed forms to BenefitsCal right away (or mail them if that's what they requested). Regarding UIB - that's just a suggestion that your husband might qualify for Unemployment Insurance Benefits, which is a completely separate program through EDD. If he lost his job and meets eligibility requirements, he should apply at the EDD website.

•Thank you! This explanation makes so much sense. I'll upload everything to BenefitsCal tonight. I didn't realize they can give conditional approval - that explains the confusion. Will my husband need a CalFresh referral to apply for unemployment or can he just go directly to EDD?

•He can go directly to EDD to apply for unemployment benefits. No CalFresh referral needed. The two programs are separate, but CalFresh workers often suggest UIB when they notice someone in the household is unemployed. Your husband should apply as soon as possible as there can be waiting periods.

they gave you $530?? we're a family of 3 too and only got $410... did you have to show any special expenses or somthing?

•I'm honestly not sure why we got that amount. During the interview, I did mention our rent is $2200 and we pay about $350 for utilities. Maybe that affected it? I also have a medical condition that requires a special diet, but I don't know if that matters for CalFresh calculations.

•The benefit amount varies based on your income, expenses, and household composition. Higher housing costs and utility expenses can increase your benefit amount through deductions. Also, if your income is lower, you'll receive more benefits. The maximum for a family of 3 in 2025 is around $750, but most households get less than the maximum depending on their specific situation.

I work for a community organization that helps with benefits, and I can tell you this happens more often than you'd think! The system sometimes approves benefits provisionally based on the interview information while waiting for documentation. Here's what you need to know: 1. Yes, you absolutely must submit those verification documents even though you received the card. Think of it as a "good faith" approval that requires follow-up. 2. You typically have 10 days from when they requested the documents to submit them before risking discontinuance. 3. The UIB mention is simply the worker noting that your husband might qualify for unemployment. This is a separate program through EDD (Employment Development Department), not CalFresh. 4. Make sure you're set up for your first SAR7 (Semi-Annual Report) which will be due 6 months from approval. Mark this deadline on your calendar! If you're having trouble reaching someone at the county to confirm what you need to submit, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to a live person at the county office without the endless hold times. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. I've recommended it to several clients who needed urgent clarification on their CalFresh cases.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I'll definitely get those documents submitted right away. I hadn't even thought about the SAR7 deadline - is that something they'll mail me when it's time to complete it? I'll check out that Claimyr service too. Last time I tried calling the county I was on hold for over an hour before giving up.

You're actually REALLY lucky! My application was pending for almost 2 months and they kept asking for more and more documents. First paystubs, then lease, then ID verification, then bank statements!!! It was so frustrating I almost gave up. Definitely send in those forms though. I made the mistake of thinking I was all set once and got cut off without warning. Then had to start the whole application over again which was a NIGHTMARE with three kids to feed.

•Oh wow, that sounds awful! I'm definitely going to send everything in tomorrow. Did they give you any notice before cutting you off or did you just find out when you tried to use your card?

•No warning at all!!! Went to buy groceries and my card was denied with my kids right there in the store. SO EMBARRASSING. Had to put everything back and use our last $50 cash for basic stuff. The worker later said they "sent a notice" but I never got it. Always keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them and write down who you talk to.

Dont trust them AT ALL!!! They did this to me too and then claimed I never submitted my docs even though I HAD PROOF i uploaded them!!! Take screenshots of EVERYTHING and write down the confirmation numbers when you upload. The system is designed to trip you up and cut benefits whenever possible.

•That's really concerning... I'll definitely take screenshots of the confirmation pages. Is there a way to check if they actually received what I uploaded?

To directly answer your questions: 1. You should definitely submit the verification documents they requested, even though you received the EBT card. CalFresh regulations allow counties to issue benefits based on your statements during the interview, but they still need verification documents to continue your benefits beyond the first month or two. 2. The best way to submit your paystubs is through BenefitsCal.com - log in to your account, go to "My Benefits" and then you should see an option to "Submit Verification" or something similar. Upload clear photos or scans of your paystubs. 3. About the UIB mention - this is simply informational. The CalFresh worker noticed your husband is unemployed and is letting you know he might qualify for Unemployment Insurance Benefits. This is handled through EDD (Employment Development Department), not CalFresh. He can apply at edd.ca.gov if he lost his job through no fault of his own. 4. Your benefit amount of $530 for a family of 3 with one income seems in the expected range for 2025, especially if you have significant housing costs or childcare expenses that were reported during your interview. Make sure you keep track of your Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) due date, which will be approximately 6 months from approval. This is absolutely critical to continue receiving benefits.

•Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I'll go submit everything through BenefitsCal right away. Do you know if there's a deadline for when these documents need to be submitted? The forms don't have any clear due date.

•Generally, verification documents should be submitted within 10 days of the request. Since you already received benefits, I would submit them immediately to avoid any potential disruption. The county may have already set a deadline in their system that could result in a discontinuance notice if you don't submit soon. Better safe than sorry!
