CalFresh voicemail says I'm approved without interview - is this normal?
So confused right now! I submitted my CalFresh application online through BenefitsCal on April 5, 2025. I was expecting to receive a letter scheduling a phone interview like everyone says happens. Been checking my mail daily for over a month now. Yesterday I finally called the county office to see what's going on and got transferred to voicemail. Today I got a message saying "Your CalFresh program status is active. You will receive a total for both May and June." Does this mean I was approved WITHOUT an interview? Is that even possible? I thought the interview was mandatory? I'm in Los Angeles County and this is my first time applying. Will I still get an EBT card in the mail or do I need to do something else? I'm happy if I'm approved but super confused about the process. Anyone else have this happen?

Yes, this is actually possible! California counties have been implementing something called "interview waivers" for many CalFresh applicants since 2022. If your information was clear and verifiable through their system, they might approve you without requiring the interview. You should still receive an approval notice in the mail with all the details, and yes, they'll mail you an EBT card separately (usually within 7-10 days of approval). The fact that they mentioned May AND June means they're giving you retroactive benefits for May (since your application was from early April) plus your regular June allotment. That's good news!

•Wow really? That's awesome actually - I was dreading the interview. So many people told me they ask tons of personal questions. Do you know if they'll send any kind of instructions for using the EBT card? Do I need to activate it somehow? And will they tell me how much I qualified for?

•That's super helpful to know! I'll watch for a plain envelope. Did they tell you how much you were approved for before the card arrived or was that a surprise too?

DONT GET TOO EXCITED YET! In my experience, voicemails from the county office are often WRONG or OUTDATED. I got a similar message once and still ended up having to do an interview later. Those automated systems are notoriously unreliable! You should keep calling back every day until you speak to an actual worker who can confirm your status. The county offices are a mess right now - half the time they don't even update their systems properly. I wouldn't trust any information until you get something in writing or talk to a real person.

•I have to disagree here. If the voicemail specifically said the status is "active" and mentioned benefits for specific months, that's pretty definitive. The county systems are actually quite good at accurately reporting active/inactive status - it's the processing timelines and communication that are often problematic. OP should definitely look for a formal notice in the mail, but the voicemail is likely accurate.

I was stuck trying to reach someone at the LA County office for WEEKS on my CalFresh application. Finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person within 20 minutes. They basically wait on hold for you and call you back when a person answers. Saved me hours of frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Might be helpful if you need to confirm anything about your approval or EBT card delivery. The constant busy signals and disconnections were driving me crazy before I found this.

•Does it cost money? I'm already broke which is why I need CalFresh lol

•It does cost a fee, but honestly it was worth it to me after spending days trying to get through. But if you already got the voicemail saying you're approved, you might not need it unless you have specific questions about your benefits.

sounds like ur one of the lucky ones! my sister and me both applied for calfresh same day back in january. she got approved w/no interview like u, but i had to do the whole phone interview thing where they ask about all ur expenses and stuff. i think it depends on what info they can verify automatically

To give you some technical context: California has what's called "Expedited Services" criteria, where if you meet certain conditions (very low income/resources), they may issue benefits within 3 days of application AND potentially waive the interview requirement temporarily. Additionally, since 2022, counties have expanded their interview waiver protocols based on verification data. If they can verify your identity, residency, income, and household composition through their databases or the documents you submitted, they may determine an interview isn't necessary. Do check your mail carefully for the next week - you should receive: 1. An official Notice of Action (NOA) stating your approval and benefit amount 2. Your EBT card in a separate plain envelope 3. PIN selection instructions You'll need to activate the card when it arrives by calling the number on the back and selecting a PIN. Also, log into your BenefitsCal account to verify your status there - it should show as approved now.

•Thank you for such detailed information! I just checked my BenefitsCal account and it does show "Active" now, which is a relief. The estimated benefit amount shows $281 - is that a normal amount for a single person? Also, will I need to do a SAR7 report in 6 months? Still learning all these requirements.

•Yes, $281 is within the normal range for a single-person household in 2025, depending on your income and expenses. And you're absolutely right about the SAR7! You'll need to submit that Semi-Annual Report at the 6-month mark. They'll mail you the form about 45 days before it's due, but it's good you're already aware of it. Many people miss that deadline and lose benefits temporarily. Also mark your calendar for your annual recertification in 12 months - that's a more comprehensive review.

omg im sooo jealous lol... i had to do TWO interviews because they "lost" my first one in the system and made me redo everything. took almost 3 months to get benefits. the system is so random sometimes!!

One important thing to remember: even though you got approved without an interview, make sure you respond to ANY mail you get from the county. Sometimes they'll approve you but still request additional verification documents with a deadline. If you miss responding to those requests, they could discontinue your benefits even after approving you. I'd recommend taking pictures of all the mail you receive from them and keeping a folder of everything, just to be safe. The CalFresh system can be confusing, especially for first-time recipients.

•That's great advice! I'll definitely keep copies of everything. One more question - do you know if I need to report if I get a part-time job? I'm currently unemployed but have a potential job opportunity coming up that would be about 20 hours a week.

•Great question! In California, you'll need to report income changes if they put you over what's called the "Income Reporting Threshold" or IRT. This amount will be listed on your approval notice. For most single-person households in 2025, the IRT is around $2,150 monthly gross income. If your new income would put you over that threshold, you need to report it within 10 days. Otherwise, you can just report it on your SAR7 at the 6-month point. Make sure to save paystubs though, as you'll need those for your SAR7 regardless of whether you report the change immediately or not.

BTW don't get too happy yet... they'll probably give you LESS than you deserve! My county keeps "accidentally" calculating my benefits wrong and I have to fight them EVERY TIME. The whole system is designed to confuse people so they don't get their full benefits!

•Dude not everything is a conspiracy. Most of the workers are just trying to help people get benefits. My worker actually helped me get MORE by making sure all my utility costs were counted properly.

Congratulations on getting approved! This is actually becoming more common. I went through the same thing last year in Orange County - submitted my application online, waited weeks expecting an interview call, then got a voicemail saying I was approved. Just wanted to add that when your EBT card arrives, you can check your benefit balance by calling the number on the back or downloading the ebtEDGE app. The app is actually really helpful for tracking your spending and checking when your monthly benefits reload (usually around the same date each month based on your case number). Also, don't worry if it takes a few days for the benefits to actually load onto your card after you receive it - there's sometimes a small delay between when the card is activated and when the funds are available. Good luck with everything!

•Thanks for mentioning the ebtEDGE app! I had no idea that existed. Is it free to download and use? Also, you mentioned benefits reload based on case number - do you know roughly what date mine would be? My case number starts with 04 if that helps. I'm trying to plan my grocery shopping around when the benefits will be available.

Yes, the ebtEDGE app is completely free! You can download it from the App Store or Google Play. For case numbers starting with 04, your benefits typically reload on the 4th of each month. So your June benefits should load on June 4th, and going forward it'll be the 4th every month. Just a heads up - the app sometimes takes a few hours to update after benefits load, so if you check early morning on the 4th and don't see them yet, don't panic! They're usually there by mid-morning. The app also lets you see your transaction history which is super helpful for budgeting.

•This is all so helpful! I'm definitely downloading the ebtEDGE app right now. The 4th of the month schedule works out perfectly for me since I usually do my big grocery shopping at the beginning of the month anyway. Thanks everyone for all the advice - I was so confused when I first got that voicemail but now I feel much more confident about the whole process. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who got approved without an interview!

Hey there! Just wanted to share my recent experience that might help ease your mind. I applied for CalFresh in Sacramento County back in March and had the exact same thing happen - no interview, just got a voicemail saying I was approved. I was skeptical at first (like some others mentioned), but it turned out to be completely legit! My EBT card arrived about 8 days after the voicemail, and all my benefits were there as promised. The approval letter came a day or two before the card. One tip that really helped me: I set up text alerts through the ebtEDGE app so I get notified immediately when benefits load or when I make purchases. Makes it much easier to keep track of everything. The no-interview thing is definitely real - my caseworker later explained that if you submit clear documentation and they can verify everything electronically, they can skip the interview to speed up the process. Sounds like you hit all the right marks with your application! Congrats on getting approved so quickly.

•This is so reassuring to hear! I was definitely feeling a bit anxious about whether the voicemail was accurate, but hearing from multiple people who had the same experience really puts my mind at ease. Setting up text alerts through the ebtEDGE app is a brilliant idea - I'll definitely do that once I get my card. It's amazing how much more streamlined the process has become compared to what I was expecting. Thanks for sharing your timeline too - knowing the card typically arrives within about a week helps me know what to expect!
