Lost EBT card for my daughter - how to get replacement and check benefits status?

My daughter just moved back in with me and says she lost her CalFresh EBT card last week. I need to help her get a replacement ASAP since she's completely out of food. Also, she's not sure if she's even getting benefits this month because her case was under review or something? What number do I call to get her a replacement card AND check if she's still getting benefits? Is this something I can do for her or does she have to call herself? (She has anxiety about phone calls and I'm trying to help her out

The EBT Customer Service number is 1-877-328-9677 for lost cards. You can call 24/7 and they'll cancel the old card and mail a new one. For benefit status, that's a separate number - you need to call your county CalFresh office directly. Your daughter would need to be present for the benefit status call since they'll ask verification questions only she can answer, but you could help her through it.

Thank you! Do you know how long it takes for the replacement card to arrive? She's literally down to ramen noodles

When my card got stolen i called the EBT number (1-877-328-9677) and they canceled it right away but the new one took TWO WEEKS to arrive!! it was horrible. if ur daughter needs food right away she should ask about emergency benefits at the county office. for the benefit status tho u HAVE to call the county office, the EBT people cant tell u anything about her case status

THIS!!! The county offices are so frustrating to reach though. I spent 3 days calling and getting disconnected before I got through to check on my SAR7 status.

Two weeks?! Omg that's way too long. Do you think if we go to the office in person they could give her one on the spot?

Your daughter has to make the call herself since its her case. The county workers wont talk to you about her benefits unless she has you listed as her authorized representative on her case file. For the card replacement she can call the EBT customer service line but for benefit status she needs to call the county office.

I didn't know about the authorized representative thing. Is that something we can set up over the phone or does she need to fill out a form?

For the lost EBT card: Call 1-877-328-9677. This is available 24/7 and they can immediately deactivate the lost card and mail a replacement. Typically takes 5-7 business days to arrive. For benefit status: She needs to call her county CalFresh office directly. Each county has a different number. What county are you in? I can provide that specific number. Regarding helping her: Unless you're listed as her Authorized Representative (AR) on her case, they won't discuss her case details with you due to privacy regulations. She would need to complete a form (typically an SAR 80) to add you as her AR if she wants you to handle calls for her. She can download this form from BenefitsCal.com or pick one up at the county office.

We're in Alameda County. I appreciate the detailed info! She definitely needs to add me as an AR because phone calls trigger her anxiety attacks. I'll look for that SAR 80 form.

When my son lost his card, I found a really helpful service called Claimyr that helped us get through to a real person at the county office without the endless hold times. You might want to check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. They basically wait on hold for you and call you back when they get a real person. Saved us hours of frustration, especially when dealing with both the card replacement AND checking on benefit status.

That sounds amazing actually. My daughter's anxiety gets so much worse with being on hold forever. I'll check out the video. Did they help you get through quickly?

Yes! Instead of the 2+ hours I spent the day before getting disconnected repeatedly, they got through in about 45 minutes. I was cooking dinner when they called me back and connected me directly to a worker. Made a huge difference for us.

That's a good idea! We'll call first to check if they do same-day cards. Might be worth the trip if they do.

NOBODY MENTIONED THIS YET - if she's really out of food right now, check if your county has emergency food banks! My benefits got delayed for 2 months during recertification (still mad about it!) and the food bank saved me. They usually don't even ask for much paperwork for emergency situations. Google "[your county] emergency food assistance" and you should find options while waiting for her card!!!!!

Thank you! I'll definitely look into local food banks. At this point we need immediate solutions while sorting out her card and benefits.

Just to follow up with specific information for Alameda County: Alameda County Social Services Agency: 510-263-2420 or 1-888-999-4772 For same-day EBT card replacement, yes, Alameda County offices can issue cards on-site at their Oakland and Hayward self-sufficiency centers during business hours (M-F, 8:30am-5pm). Your daughter would need to bring photo ID. For the Authorized Representative form, here's the direct link: https://www.cdss.ca.gov/cdssweb/entres/forms/English/SAR80.pdf And the Alameda County Community Food Bank has a helpline at 1-800-870-FOOD (3663) or 510-635-3663 for immediate food assistance.

You are incredible! Thank you so much for all this specific information. We'll head to the Oakland office tomorrow morning with her ID, and I'll have her fill out that AR form. The food bank number is also super helpful - calling them now. Really appreciate your help!
