Is the EBT Edge mobile app legitimate for CalFresh benefits?

Has anyone used the EBT Edge app for their CalFresh benefits? I just heard about it from someone at the WIC office and downloaded it, but I'm hesitant to put in my card info. The app says I can check my balance, transaction history, and find stores that accept EBT. Seems convenient but I'm worried it might be a scam to steal my benefits. I currently have to call that automated number every time I want to check my balance which is annoying. Anyone know if this Edge app is actually legit and safe to use?

Yes, the EBT Edge app is legitimate! It's developed by FIS (Fidelity National Information Services), the same company that processes EBT transactions in many states including California. I've been using it for about 8 months with my CalFresh benefits and it's really helpful. You can check your balance instantly, see transaction history, and find stores nearby that accept EBT. Just make sure you download the official app from the App Store or Google Play - there are sometimes fake apps that try to steal your information.

Oh thank you! That's a relief. I was worried about entering my card info. Have you ever had any issues with it showing the wrong balance or anything?

my friend tried 2 use it and said it kept crashing on her phone but idk maybe she had an old phone or somethin. i just keep my receipt from the store that shows my balance, easier 4 me

I think it depends on what kind of phone you have. My ancient Android couldn't run it at all but works fine on my new one. The receipt thing is smart though!

The EBT Edge app is definitely legitimate and is actually recommended by many county CalFresh offices. It's authorized by the same company that manages the EBT card system in California. A few helpful tips: 1. Make sure you're downloading the actual app (made by FIS Global) 2. You can use the app to check both your CalFresh food benefits AND cash benefits if you receive CalWORKs 3. The app includes a store locator feature that shows places accepting EBT nearby 4. You can set up alerts for deposits and low balance notifications 5. The transaction history can be helpful for budgeting I regularly recommend it to clients as it's much more convenient than calling the phone number on the back of your EBT card.

Thanks for all the details! I didn't know about the alerts feature, that sounds super helpful. I'm always forgetting when my benefits get deposited.

BEWARE! I don't trust ANY of these apps with my benefits!!! My cousin's neighbor had their ENTIRE MONTH'S BENEFITS STOLEN after using some EBT app (not sure if it was this one). The county wouldn't replace the stolen benefits and her kids went HUNGRY. The government barely gives us enough to survive as it is, why risk it??? Just call the number on the back of your card like we've always done!!!

I understand your concern, but I'm pretty certain that wasn't the official EBT Edge app. There have been scam apps created to steal information, which is why it's important to only download the official app from FIS. The official app doesn't store your PIN - you enter it for each transaction just like you would at a store. The EBT Edge app just reads information that's already available in the system, it doesn't process new transactions.

I downloaded that app last year and it's been really useful! No more calling that annoying automated line. Just make sure you actually get the real EBT Edge app, not some knockoff. One thing thats annoying though is sometimes it logs me out randomly and I have to sign in again. But overall its pretty good for checking your balance quickly.

If you're having trouble getting through to a CalFresh worker to ask about officially recommended apps or other questions, try using Claimyr. It helped me bypass the endless phone waiting when I needed to talk to someone about my benefits being suddenly reduced. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 and sign up at claimyr.com. Basically they wait on hold with the CalFresh office for you and call you back when a real person answers. Saved me literally hours of hold time when I needed to get verification about which apps were safe to use with my EBT card.

I've never heard of this service before! My last recertification had so many issues and I spent HOURS trying to get through. Does it work for all counties in California?

Yes, it works for all California counties! I was in the same boat with my recertification. I needed to talk to someone but couldn't waste half a day on hold with two kids at home. It was definitely worth it for me.

Just wanted to add that I've used EBT Edge for about a year now and it's been totally safe. The only issue I had was when I got a new phone number and had trouble updating it in the app. Had to delete and reinstall. Otherwise it's been great!

The legitimate EBT Edge app has a blue icon with white letters and a little shopping cart symbol. If you saw one with a green icon, that might be a different app or possibly not legitimate. Always download directly from the app store and check the developer name (should be FIS Global).

Just to clarify some information I'm seeing in the comments: 1. The EBT Edge app is officially approved for use with CalFresh benefits 2. Even if the app crashes or has technical issues, it cannot "take" your benefits - it's just displaying information 3. The only way benefits can be stolen is if someone has both your physical card AND your PIN 4. Not all county workers mention the app during recertification because it's not required for managing benefits, just a convenience option 5. If you're concerned about app legitimacy, you can always call the official EBT customer service number (877-328-9677) to verify Hope this helps clear up some confusion!

Thank you for clarifying! I went ahead and set up the app and it's working great. Much easier than calling that number every time. I appreciate everyone's help!
