MyBenefits CalWIN app not working - need safe alternatives to check CalFresh EBT balance
I've been using the MyBenefits CalWIN app for years to check my EBT balance and transaction history, but it seems like it's completely stopped working on my phone. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it just crashes when I try to log in. I need something reliable to track my CalFresh spending since I'm on a tight budget for groceries this month. Are there other legitimate apps I can download that are safe to use with my EBT card info? I'm hesitant to just put my card details in any random app. Has the county officially moved to a different app that I don't know about? Any help would be appreciated!

You can use the BenefitsCal mobile app or website instead! It replaced most of the CalWIN functions back in 2023 and should have all your CalFresh/EBT info. Most counties have fully transitioned to BenefitsCal now. You can download it from the app store or go to benefitscal.com - it's the official state platform for managing all benefits including CalFresh. If you had a CalWIN account, you'll need to create a new BenefitsCal account and link your case number.

•Thank you! I'll try BenefitsCal right away. Do I need to contact my county worker to get my case number transferred over or will it automatically connect once I register?

•Thanks for this suggestion! Is it safe though? I'm always worried about entering my EBT card info into apps that aren't officially from the county.

•ConnectEBT is completely legitimate and safe! It's the official app from Conduent (formerly Xerox) who manages the EBT card system for California. It's specifically designed just for checking balances and transactions, while BenefitsCal handles your actual case management, documents, and recertifications.

You can also just call the number on the back of your EBT card (1-877-328-9677) to check your balance without any app at all. That's what I do since I don't trust putting my info in apps anyway.

•This is what I always tell people too! Why download some app when you can just make a quick call? I've been on CalFresh for 6 years and NEVER used an app. Too many scammers out there trying to steal benefits. Just last month my cousin got her entire month's balance stolen because she put her info in some third-party app that looked official!

I work with CalFresh clients and can confirm BenefitsCal is now the primary platform for all case management including CalFresh. The old CalWIN system has been gradually phased out as counties transitioned to the new system. For just checking your EBT balance and transactions, you have three secure options: 1. BenefitsCal app/website (benefitscal.com) - full case management + EBT balance 2. ConnectEBT app - just for EBT balance/transactions (official app from the EBT card provider) 3. Call the EBT customer service number on your card (877-328-9677) If you're having trouble setting up your BenefitsCal account, you might need to reach a CalFresh worker at your county office. They can help link your case information to your new BenefitsCal account.

•I've been trying to get through to a CalFresh worker at my county office for THREE DAYS! The phone system is a nightmare - automated messages, disconnects after 30 minutes on hold, and no callback option. Does anyone have a trick to actually reach a human being? I need to get this BenefitsCal account set up before my recertification next month.

•I had the same problem trying to reach my county worker! Someone on this forum recommended using Claimyr and it actually worked. It's a service that waits on hold with the county office for you and calls you back when they reach a real person. I used it last week to fix my BenefitsCal account issues and it saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. The service connected me directly to a worker who helped me link my CalFresh case to the new system.

The WHOLE SYSTEM is a mess!! I tried BenefitsCal and half my info was missing, then tried ConnectEBT and it showed the wrong balance!! Called the county and waited 45 mins just to be told they cant help with the app and I need to call tech support!!! WHY can't they just use ONE SYSTEM THAT WORKS?? My recert is due next month and I'm worried ill lose my benefits because of their stupid technology problems!!!

•I understand your frustration. The transition between systems has been challenging for many. For your recertification, I'd recommend using the BenefitsCal website on a computer rather than the app if possible - it tends to be more stable. You can also submit paper recertification if needed as a backup. The ConnectEBT balance sometimes takes 24 hours to update after transactions, which might explain the discrepancy you saw.

Update: I downloaded both BenefitsCal and ConnectEBT. The ConnectEBT was super easy to set up and I can see my balance right away. The BenefitsCal was more complicated - I had to create an account and then it asked for my case number, which I had to find on an old notice. But now I have access to everything! Thanks everyone for your help!

•Make sure you set up 2-factor authentication in BenefitsCal. There's been a lot of account hacking lately where scammers try to change people's direct deposit info for cash benefits.

I'm still confused about all this. So CalWIN is completely gone now? I have my annual recertification interview for CalFresh next week and I'm worried I'm supposed to be using some new system I don't know about. Will my EBT card still work the same? And when they say "BenefitsCal" is that the same as the old "MyCalFresh" website or something completely different? Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to lose my benefits because I missed some announcement.

•Great questions! Let me clarify: 1. Your EBT card works exactly the same at stores regardless of which system/app you use to check it 2. BenefitsCal has replaced both CalWIN and MyCalFresh (it's a new unified system) 3. For your recertification interview, you should receive instructions specific to your county 4. You won't lose benefits just because you haven't switched to the new system yet If you're worried about your recertification interview, you can create a BenefitsCal account now, but you can also still complete your recert by phone or with paper forms if needed.
