How to check if my child is approved for P-EBT benefits in 2025?
My daughter's school sent home a paper about P-EBT benefits for kids who get free lunch, but I never received any card or update about it. She's been on the free lunch program since September. It's already March and I keep checking the mail but nothing!! How do I find out if she's actually approved or if something went wrong with our application? Do I call the school or CalFresh office? So confused and really need this extra help for groceries right now.

I was in the same boat last year! The P-EBT system is completely separate from regular CalFresh, even though the benefits look similar. You should check the P-EBT portal at ca.p-ebt.org first - you can look up your child's status using their student ID and some other info. If your child qualifies, you should be able to see if a card has been issued yet. The 2025 P-EBT cards are rolling out in phases by county, so depending on where you live, it might not have been sent yet.

•It actually does make sense, but the eligibility can be confusing. For 2025 P-EBT, your child needs to be enrolled in free/reduced meals through the National School Lunch Program AND their school needs to have had qualifying COVID-related absences or closures during the benefit period. Some schools qualify while others don't, even within the same district.

I work with the P-EBT program and can provide some accurate information. For 2025 P-EBT: 1. Check your eligibility: If your child receives free/reduced meals through the National School Lunch Program (application or Community Eligibility Provision), they may qualify 2. Check status: Visit ca.p-ebt.org and use your child's student ID and birthdate 3. Timeline: Cards are being mailed in waves by county from January through May 2025 4. Previous cardholders: If you received P-EBT in past years, benefits may be loaded to your existing card 5. Contact options: P-EBT Hotline (1-877-328-9677) but be aware wait times can be 1-2 hours The 2025 benefit amount is $48 per eligible month per student, and benefits are retroactive to August 2024 for eligible students.

•This is SO helpful, thank you! I just checked the website and it says my daughter was approved but card hasn't been mailed yet. Relief!!! Will it show on the website when they mail it? And we've never had a card before so I know we'll get a new one.

•Yes, the website should update to show when the card has been mailed. Once it shows as "mailed," allow 7-10 business days for delivery. When you receive it, you'll need to set a PIN before using it. I'm glad your daughter is approved!

I was trying to call that P-EBT hotline for THREE DAYS last month and kept getting disconnected after waiting for hours! So frustrating! Finally I used Claimyr to get through to a real person - it's a service that holds your place in line and calls you back when a rep is available. Saved me so much time! Just go to claimyr.com or check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The P-EBT rep told me my kids' cards were approved but delayed due to address verification issues. They fixed it right away once I actually got to speak to someone.

•Yes! I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of holding. When I called the regular way I got disconnected twice after waiting over an hour each time. With this I got a call back in about 45 minutes when they had a rep available.

MY KIDS NEVER GOT THEIR CARDS LAST YEAR AND I GAVE UP AFTER TRYING TO CALL FOR WEEKS!!! The system is BROKEN and they don't care about helping families who actually need it. Now I hear they're doing it again this year? Whatever. Not getting my hopes up.

•That's really unfortunate about your experience last year. However, the good news is that you might still be able to claim those benefits. The state implemented a new process for requesting replacement cards for missed 2024 benefits - you can submit a form on the ca.p-ebt.org website under "Lost Benefits." They're accepting these requests until June 30, 2025. Worth a try since those benefits could be substantial depending on how many kids you have.

My neighbor's kids get P-EBT but mine don't and we're in the same school? Make it make sense lol

•A few possible reasons: 1. Your neighbor's children might qualify for free/reduced lunch while yours don't (based on household income) 2. Your neighbor's children might have had COVID-related absences during qualifying periods 3. Your neighbor might have foster children who automatically qualify 4. Your children might actually be approved but the card hasn't been mailed yet I'd recommend checking the P-EBT portal with your children's information to be sure.

•Great news! Make sure you activate it right away when it arrives - the instructions will come with the card. And keep it even after you use all the benefits because they sometimes add more later in the year!

That's awesome news Ruby! So glad you were able to get it sorted out. The P-EBT portal is definitely the way to go - saved me so much stress when I was trying to figure out my son's benefits last year. Once you get the card, you'll be able to use it just like a regular EBT card at grocery stores. The $48 per month really does add up and helps a lot with the grocery budget. Hope your card arrives quickly!

•This is such great news Ruby! I'm so happy you got it figured out. I'm actually new to this whole P-EBT thing - my kids just started getting free lunch this year and I had no idea about these benefits until I saw your post. Definitely going to check that portal tonight to see if we qualify. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info, especially about the website and phone number. This community is amazing!
