EBT card safety: Worried about skimmers at stores affecting my CalFresh benefits

I just used my EBT card at Walgreens to buy some groceries with my CalFresh benefits, and noticed something strange on the card reader. There was this clear plastic film over the keypad that seemed loose. The cashier said it was just a protective cover to prevent damage, but after hearing about people getting their benefits stolen, I'm really paranoid now. Can skimming devices be placed over EBT card readers? What should I look for to make sure my CalFresh benefits are safe? I only get $476/month for my family of 3 and absolutely cannot afford to lose any of it to scammers. Should I call my county office to request a new card just to be safe?

Yes, EBT skimmers are definitely a real concern! I work in retail and we're trained to spot them. Real skimmers usually look like an additional piece attached to where you insert your card - they might be bulkier than the original card slot or have a different color plastic. For the keypad, overlays can capture your PIN - they'll typically feel raised, loose, or thicker than normal. If the film was actually part of the machine's design (many stores add protective covers to prevent damage), it's probably fine, but follow your instincts. If something looks suspicious: 1. Report it to the store manager immediately 2. Call the EBT customer service number on the back of your card 3. Monitor your CalFresh balance regularly through the EBT app or by calling If you're really worried, you can request a new card and change your PIN through your county office. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your benefits!

Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed info! I checked my balance as soon as I got home and nothing seemed off, but I'm still nervous. Do you think I should change my PIN even if I don't get a new card? Also is there any way I can check if transactions were made without me knowing? I don't always keep exact track of my balance.

my bf had his entire calfresh balanc stolen last yr they put a skimmer on the atm by the 7/11 near us!!! took all $612 and we couldnt eat for like a week till the county replaced it. now he always wiggles the card reader part before putting his card in. if it feels loose or comes off DON'T USE IT!!!!

OMG that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did he get his benefits back eventually? How long did it take? I'm definitely going to start checking the card readers from now on.

yeah but it took like 10 days and they made him file a police report and everything. total pain in the a**. now he only uses the ATM inside the actual bank building cause those have cameras everywhere

I understand your concern about EBT card skimmers. The clear film you're describing could be legitimate, but it's good you're being cautious. Here are some reliable ways to protect your CalFresh benefits: • Always inspect the card reader before inserting your EBT card. Look for anything unusual, loose parts, or different coloring. • Cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN, even if no one's around (cameras can be hidden). • Check your EBT account balance frequently through the official app or by calling the number on your card. • If possible, use your EBT card at major grocery stores rather than smaller convenience stores, as larger retailers typically have better security and surveillance. • If you suspect your card was compromised, report it immediately to both the EBT customer service (1-877-328-9677) and your county CalFresh office. If you're really concerned, requesting a new card and changing your PIN is a reasonable precaution. Your county worker can help with this process.

i always tug on the card reader before i use my ebt card. if it feels loose or comes off, thats a skimmer! also look for tiny cameras pointed at the keypad. thieves put those there to see your pin when you type it

I didn't even think about cameras! That's terrifying. I'm going to start checking for those too. Do they look like regular security cameras or are they hidden?

they can be super tiny like smaller than a pencil eraser sometimes hidden in fake security camera housings or stuck in corners with putty

I had my CalFresh benefits stolen last year and it was a NIGHTMARE getting them replaced. The county office kept telling me I had to wait for an investigation but my kids needed to eat NOW not in 2-3 weeks! I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual EBT fraud specialist instead of getting disconnected or waiting on hold forever. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The specialist was able to expedite my case and I got emergency replacement benefits while they investigated the theft. Definitely worth it when you're desperate to talk to an actual person about your benefits instead of just the automated system.

I've never heard of this service before! Did they replace your full benefit amount? I'm always afraid of calling because I never get through to a real person.

Yes they replaced everything! The key was that I had reported it within 10 days of the theft happening. Make sure you call right away if you ever notice missing benefits. The service just helped me skip the 2+ hour wait time and actually get a real person who could help.

I'm paranoid about this too! After my sister had her CalFresh benefits stolen (almost $700!), I started using a few tricks: 1) I ALWAYS check my balance before AND after shopping so I know exactly what was spent 2) I set up text alerts for all my EBT transactions through the EBT app 3) I only use my card at stores with visible security cameras near the registers 4) I changed my PIN to something totally random, not my birthday or address TBH the fact that the cashier immediately had an explanation ready makes me suspicious... like maybe they've had this concern before? Maybe other customers noticed something off too?

The text alerts for EBT transactions is excellent advice. Many CalFresh recipients don't realize this feature exists. You can set this up through the ConnectEBT mobile app or on the California EBT website. It's one of the best ways to catch unauthorized transactions immediately.

I didn't know about the text alerts! I'm definitely going to set that up right now. Thanks for the tip!

You know they got those new EBT cards with the chips now that are supposed to be more secure but idk if that really helps with skimmers. my cousin still got her CalWorks money stolen even with the chip card.

The chip cards are definitely more secure than the magnetic stripe alone, but they aren't foolproof. Skimmers can still capture data from the magnetic stripe if you swipe instead of using the chip. Always try to use the chip insertion method when possible - it creates a unique code for each transaction that can't be reused by scammers. And remember, CalWorks funds and CalFresh benefits are on the same EBT card but are separate programs with different rules for replacement if theft occurs.

Update: I called the EBT customer service line and they said my balance looks normal with no suspicious transactions. I'm still going to change my PIN just to be safe, and I set up those text alerts that someone mentioned! Thanks everyone for the advice - I'm going to be WAY more careful about where I use my EBT card from now on. The county worker also said they're seeing more skimming cases lately and recommended only using the card at major grocery stores if possible.

Smart move changing your PIN! I change mine every few months now just as a precaution. Also another tip - if you shop at the same stores regularly, try to use the same checkout lanes with cashiers you recognize. My local grocery store has a cashier who actually watches for people who might be tampering with their machines.
