CalFresh EBT 1-877 customer service number not working - showing 'invalid card number'
Is anyone else having trouble with the EBT customer service number (1-877-328-9677)? I've been trying to check my CalFresh balance since yesterday but every time I call, the automated system says my card number is invalid. I've double-checked the number multiple times and even tried typing it really slowly. My card still works at stores - I used it at FoodMaxx this morning - so I know the card itself isn't deactivated. Did they change the system or something? I need to check if my benefits for July loaded correctly because last month they only gave me half of what I was supposed to get and I had to call my caseworker to fix it. Anyone else experiencing this?

The EBT phone system has been really glitchy lately! Make sure you're entering the 16-digit number on the front of your card, not the 19-digit number on the back. Also, wait for the full prompt before entering - sometimes if you type too early it registers as an error. If that doesn't work, you can also check your balance online at www.ebt.ca.gov or through the ConnectEBT mobile app, which might be easier anyway.

•Thanks for the quick response! I'll try waiting for the full prompt before typing. I didn't realize there was an app - downloading it now. Hopefully this works because I'm worried about my benefits this month.

•Good to know it's not just me! Did you ever figure out why it started working again? Did you have to do anything?

I had this exact same problem two weeks ago!! It was giving me anxiety because I thought maybe they had cancelled my benefits without telling me (which has happened before). I kept calling and trying different things but nothing worked. Finally I just went to the county office in person and they said it was a system-wide issue they were working on. Have you tried the BenefitsCal website? Sometimes you can check your balance there too, though it's not always up to date.

•I haven't tried BenefitsCal yet - I'll check there too. Going to the office in person is my last resort since it's so far from my house and the bus only runs there twice a day. How long did it take them to fix the system issue when you experienced it?

•It took about 4 days before the phone system started working again for me. The frustrating part was they didn't announce it anywhere! I just kept trying every day until it worked. The county worker I talked to said they were "updating the system" or something. Always when we need it most, right? 😩

This is a known issue that's been affecting the EBT phone system intermittently since they upgraded their infrastructure last month. Some counties are more affected than others. Here's what you can do: 1. Try using the ConnectEBT mobile app as others suggested 2. Check your balance at www.ebt.ca.gov (though this sometimes has a 24-hour delay) 3. If you have access to BenefitsCal, you can sometimes see pending deposits there 4. As a last resort, call your county CalFresh office directly to check your balance The phone system issues are supposed to be resolved by July 15th according to the last notice I saw from CDSS, but who knows if they'll meet that deadline.

•Thank you for such detailed info! I wonder why they don't tell us about these upgrades in advance? I tried the ConnectEBT app and it worked! My benefits did load correctly this month, so that's one less thing to worry about.

•Thanks for the suggestion, but I just got my card replaced about 6 months ago, and they're supposed to be good for a few years. Plus it still works at stores, so I don't think that's the issue.

If you're having trouble reaching someone at the EBT customer service or your county CalFresh office, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. It helped me get through to a real person when I had a similar issue with my EBT card not working with the automated system. They basically wait on hold for you and call you back when they get a real person. Saved me hours of frustration! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video that shows how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

•I've never heard of this service before. Does it really work? I've spent so many hours on hold with CalFresh in the past that it would be worth trying something new.

•It really worked for me! I was skeptical at first too, but after being on hold for 2+ hours multiple times trying to resolve an issue with my CalFresh benefits, I gave it a shot. They called me back in about 45 minutes with a caseworker on the line. Definitely saved me a lot of time and frustration.

•is it free tho?? seems sketchy that someone would just wait on hold for u

•No, it's not free, but for me it was worth it to not waste half my day on hold. They tell you the cost upfront before you commit to anything. I just couldn't afford to miss more work sitting on hold all day.

I work for a community organization that helps people with CalFresh applications, and we've heard about this issue from multiple clients over the past two weeks. It seems to be affecting people randomly across different counties. The EBT vendor (Conduent) is doing system updates that were supposed to be completed by the end of June, but they're obviously running behind schedule. One thing I've found that sometimes works: try calling very early in the morning (like 6-7am when the system first opens) or late at night. Sometimes the system works during off-peak hours when there's less traffic. If you need to check your balance urgently and nothing else works, grocery stores like Safeway and Food4Less can print your balance on a receipt if you ask the cashier (without making a purchase).

•Thank you for this insider info! I'll try calling early tomorrow morning. And I had no idea you could check your balance at grocery stores without making a purchase - that's super helpful to know!

Did anyone else notice they changed the menu options too? I called last week and all the prompts were different. Pressed what I thought was for balance check and somehow ended up in fraud reporting??? So confusing when they change things and don't tell anyone.

•Yes, they completely redesigned the IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system as part of the upgrade. The new menu structure is: 1 - Balance inquiry 2 - Recent transaction history 3 - Report lost/stolen card 4 - PIN changes 5 - Hear card number 6 - Other customer service 7 - Fraud reporting It's definitely confusing when they make these changes without proper notification.

UPDATE: Just saw on the CalFresh Twitter account that they're aware of the EBT phone system issues and are working to resolve them. They didn't give a specific timeline but acknowledged the problem is affecting multiple counties. In the meantime, they recommend using the ConnectEBT app or website.

•Thank you for sharing that update! At least they're acknowledging the problem exists. I've been using the app since someone suggested it earlier and it's working fine for me now.
