Best grocery stores that accept EBT/CalFresh with good prices in 2025?
With grocery prices getting completely out of control in 2025, I'm trying to stretch my CalFresh benefits further. I used to shop at Safeway but their prices have gotten insane lately ($8 for a dozen eggs?!). I've got about $435/month for a family of 3 and it's barely lasting two weeks now. Which grocery stores have you found have the best prices while still accepting EBT? I've heard Grocery Outlet is good but the one near me has really hit-or-miss selection. Are there any hidden gems I should know about? Or any stores with special discounts for CalFresh recipients? We're in Sacramento county if that helps.

Food 4 Less and Winco have been my go-to places for the past year. Their prices are WAY better than the big chains and they take EBT no problem. Winco especially has amazing bulk section where you can get exactly what you need - saves me so much $$ on things like rice and beans. Also download the Flipp app - it shows all the weekly ads in one place so you can comparison shop without driving everywhere. Some ethnic grocery stores like the asian markets also have super cheap produce if you have any near you!

•Thank you!! There's a Winco about 15 min away I've never tried. Good idea about the ethnic markets too - there's a Mexican grocery near me I should check out. Do you know if farmers markets still do that thing where they match CalFresh dollars? I vaguely remember hearing about that.

I shop at Walmart for most stuff and then hit up Aldi for produce and dairy. Between those two i save at least $100 compared to safeway. Dollar tree has some stuff too but check experation dates!!!!

•Dollar Tree doesn't even take EBT for half their stuff, I tried to buy some canned foods there last month and got declined at checkout. SUPER embarrassing. But yeah Walmart prices are decent just the lines are crazy long.

FoodMaxx is amazing!! I've been shopping there for over 6 years on CalFresh. We're also a family of 3 and I can stretch our benefits a LOT further there. Some locations are better than others though. Smart & Final is another good option if you can buy slightly larger quantities - their prices on meat can be really good. Don't forget about the Market Match program at farmers markets! If you spend $10 in CalFresh benefits, they'll match it with another $10 for fruits and vegetables. My kids actually eat more produce now because of this program. Not all farmers markets participate but most of the big ones in Sacramento do. Here's their website: https://marketmatch.org

•THANK YOU for the Market Match reminder! I completely forgot about that program. That would help so much with fresh produce costs. I'll check out FoodMaxx too - there's one not too far from me. Do you find their store brands are decent quality?

•Their store brands are actually pretty good! I was skeptical at first but now I buy them regularly. Their dairy products and canned goods are just as good as name brands. The only thing I don't like is their store brand paper products, those I still get at Walmart or Target when on sale.

Grocery Outlet is hit or miss, as you mentioned, but if you can be flexible with your meal planning it's worth it. I actually worked at a food bank for years and we always recommended people try these options: 1. Winco - consistently low prices and good bulk section 2. FoodMaxx/Food 4 Less - great sales and generally low prices 3. Grocery Outlet - amazing deals but inconsistent inventory 4. Farmers Markets with Market Match (doubles your benefits up to $10/visit) 5. Ethnic markets for produce and staples Also, if you haven't already, make sure you're getting the maximum CalFresh benefit you're entitled to. Many families don't report all eligible deductions like childcare expenses, medical expenses for elderly/disabled household members, and high housing costs. If your circumstances have changed, it might be worth checking if you qualify for more benefits.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I didn't know about deducting childcare expenses - we pay about $750/month for after-school care. Would that help increase our benefits? Last time I recertified the worker seemed rushed and didn't really explain all the deductions.

•Absolutely! Childcare expenses are a major deduction that often gets overlooked. The $750 you pay for after-school care should definitely be reported as it could significantly increase your benefit amount. When you have your next SAR7 or recertification, make sure to include documentation of those childcare payments. If you don't want to wait until then, you can report this change now since it might increase your benefits. However, I know how hard it can be to get through to CalFresh workers on the phone. If you're having trouble reaching someone, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you skip the phone queues and get connected to a real person at the CalFresh office. I used it when I needed to update my case and it saved me hours of waiting. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

The system is RIGGED against us! CalFresh benefits haven't kept up with inflation AT ALL. In 2019 I could buy decent groceries for my family with benefits, now it's impossible!!! The so-called "increases" they give us are a joke compared to how much food costs have gone up. I'm so tired of politicians pretending they care about hunger while we're all struggling to feed our kids. And don't get me started on how the county workers make you feel like a criminal just for asking questions about your benefits. To answer your question though - Winco and FoodMaxx are the only places worth shopping anymore. Safeway and the fancy stores are for rich people now.

•I feel your frustration! The benefit amounts really haven't kept pace with inflation. Have you tried contacting your state representative about this issue? Sometimes they can help advocate for program improvements. The CalFresh Advocacy Coalition is also pretty active in pushing for higher benefit amounts.

•LOL sure, like politicians care what we think! I've written emails before and just got form responses. The whole system needs to be completely overhauled, not just tiny increases every few years. But yeah, I'll check out that coalition, maybe if enough of us make noise something will change.

BTW forgot to mention - if you have Amazon Prime (or can get the discounted version with your EBT card), Amazon Fresh sometimes has good deals and delivers. Also Walmart+ grocery delivery is free if you have CalFresh and order $50+. Saved me when my car broke down last month!

•I didn't know Walmart had free delivery with CalFresh! That would be so helpful when I'm working late. Is it easy to set up?

Kiara Fisherman
•Yes! Just go to the Walmart+ section on their website and there's an option to verify your EBT card to get the free membership. Takes like 5 minutes to set up. The only catch is you have to use your EBT card at least once a month on Walmart.com or in-store to keep the free membership active. Also not every item is available for delivery, but most regular groceries are.

just wanted to update - I actually tried calling yesterday to ask about increasing my benefits due to childcare costs like someone suggested here. Was on hold forever then got disconnected THREE TIMES. so annoying. i hate dealing with the county office. they make everything so difficult on purpose i swear

•Sorry you had that experience! Unfortunately, that's super common with county benefit offices. I've been recommending Claimyr to people who keep getting disconnected - they'll wait on hold for you and call you back when they reach a live person. Saved me hours of frustration. Their website shows exactly how it works: claimyr.com

Update: I tried Winco yesterday based on everyone's suggestions here and WOW what a difference! I got almost exactly the same items I usually get at Safeway and spent $64 less! That's going to make a huge difference stretching our benefits. The store was pretty crowded but worth it for the savings. I also signed up for that Market Match program for the farmers market this weekend. Thank you all for the helpful advice!

•Awesome!! So glad it helped! Winco is definitely a game-changer. And once you get used to the layout, shopping gets faster. Don't forget to check out their bulk section next time - things like oatmeal, rice, and pasta are WAY cheaper there than buying packaged.

Great to see everyone sharing such helpful tips! As a newcomer to this community, I'm dealing with similar struggles stretching my CalFresh benefits. The inflation has been brutal - what used to last me 3 weeks now barely makes it 2. I'm definitely going to try some of these suggestions, especially Winco and FoodMaxx since I have both nearby. The Market Match program sounds amazing too - I had no idea that existed! It's so helpful to have a community where we can share real practical advice instead of just complaining. Looking forward to learning more money-saving strategies from everyone here.

•Welcome to the community! It's great to have someone else who gets how tough things have gotten with these grocery prices. The inflation really has been insane - I remember when my CalFresh benefits felt like they went so much further. You're going to love Winco once you try it! Make sure to bring a quarter for the shopping cart and maybe some bags since they don't provide them, but the savings are totally worth it. The Market Match program has been a lifesaver for getting fresh produce - definitely check if your local farmers market participates. Looking forward to hearing how these suggestions work out for you!

As someone new to this community, I'm really grateful for all the practical advice being shared here! The grocery price inflation has been absolutely crushing - my CalFresh benefits used to last almost the full month but now I'm scrambling by week 3. I've been mainly shopping at Vons and Ralphs but clearly need to branch out based on what everyone's saying. There's a Winco about 20 minutes from me that I've driven past countless times but never tried - definitely going this weekend! The Market Match program sounds incredible too, I had no idea CalFresh benefits could be doubled for produce. Does anyone know if the program works at all farmers markets or just certain ones? Also curious if anyone has experience with those meal planning apps that help stretch benefits further - wondering if they're worth the time investment.

•Welcome Sofia! You're definitely going to save a ton switching from Vons and Ralphs - those places are so expensive now! For Market Match, not all farmers markets participate but most of the bigger ones do. You can check which ones on the marketmatch.org website that @Mason Stone shared earlier. Just look for the participating "locations section." As for meal planning apps, I ve'tried a few but honestly just using the store flyers and planning around sales has worked better for me. The Flipp app that @Kiara Fisherman mentioned is great for comparing weekly ads all in one place. That 20 minute drive to Winco will be so worth it - bring a quarter for the cart and your own bags! Looking forward to hearing how your first trip goes.

As a newcomer to this community, I want to thank everyone for such amazing practical advice! I'm in a similar situation - family of 4 and our CalFresh benefits have been running out faster and faster each month. Reading through all these suggestions is giving me hope that I can stretch our dollars further. I've been stubbornly sticking to the same stores out of habit, but clearly need to explore these other options. There's both a FoodMaxx and Winco within driving distance that I've never tried. The Market Match program sounds like a game-changer too - I love that it specifically helps with fresh produce since that's where I feel like I'm spending the most. It's so refreshing to find a community where people share real, actionable tips instead of just venting (though sometimes we all need to vent too!). Looking forward to learning more money-saving strategies and hopefully contributing some of my own discoveries once I start trying these new stores.

•Welcome Malik! So glad you found this community helpful - it really makes such a difference having people who understand the struggle. A family of 4 must be even tougher to feed on these benefits with how crazy prices have gotten. You're absolutely right about needing to break out of the habit of shopping at the same stores - I was doing the same thing until I found this group! Both FoodMaxx and Winco are going to be huge game-changers for you. Just a heads up that Winco can get pretty busy on weekends, so if you can go during weekday mornings it's usually less crowded. And definitely don't miss out on their bulk bins - perfect for feeding a larger family! The Market Match program is amazing for produce, and with 4 people you'll probably max out that $10 match pretty easily. Can't wait to hear about your savings once you start exploring these new options!
