my cousin works for calfresh and she said they sometimes close for emergencies too like if theres a threat or something? maybe check local news?
Good point. I just checked the news sites for both Sacramento and San Bernardino counties and don't see anything about threats or emergencies. Seems like the training day explanation is most likely.
just to update everyone i called my county (sacramento) and they said its definitely the quarterly training and offices will be open tomorrow. they're automatically adding 10 days to any deadlines for people with appointments today. the lady was super nice about it and said theyre sending notices but they went out late.
this happened to me last year!! my worker said we were getting another payment but it never came. when i finally got thru to someone they said my worker was confused and mixing up P-EBT with the regular CalFresh emergency allotments which ended years ago. so frustrating how even the workers dont understand the different programs!!!
That's exactly what I'm worried about. I don't want to count on money that's not actually coming. I'll try to get through to the county office tomorrow and get a definite answer. It seems like there's a lot of confusion around these benefits, even among the workers.
My kids school sent home a flyer about summer EBT which is different from P-EBT maybe that's what your worker was talking about? It's for when school is out in summer so kids still get food money. Check if your state is doing that program maybe?
This is a good point. Summer EBT is a relatively new program that provides food benefits to eligible children during summer break when school meals aren't available. California is participating in this program for 2025. If your children qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, they might be eligible for Summer EBT benefits. This could be what your caseworker was referring to, rather than a second P-EBT payment. Definitely contact your county office to clarify which specific program was being referenced. CalFresh, P-EBT, and Summer EBT are related but separate programs with different eligibility requirements and payment schedules.
MY FRIEND SAID theres gonna be another increase in october 2025!!!! she works for the county so she knows, but she said its only like 2% so not that much really
That's correct. CalFresh/SNAP benefits typically have a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) that happens each October. The exact percentage varies based on the Thrifty Food Plan calculations, but it's usually around 1-3%. For someone getting the full benefit amount for a family of 3 (which would be around $785 in 2025), a 2% increase would add about $15-16 to the monthly benefit. For someone receiving a smaller amount, the increase would be proportionally less.
This whole system is a JOKE. I'm a single mom with 2 kids and they gave me $23 a month. TWENTY THREE DOLLARS. What am I supposed to do with that??? The worker told me it was because I make "too much money" at my job. I make $17.50 an hour!!! HOW IS THAT TOO MUCH??? Meanwhile my neighbor doesn't work AT ALL and gets $600+ every month. Make it make sense!!!
I know it seems unfair, but CalFresh is designed as a supplemental program with benefits that decrease as income increases. The formula is pretty complicated with deductions for housing, childcare, etc. Your neighbor with no income would naturally get the maximum benefit. But I agree that the drop-off is too steep - there should be a more gradual reduction as people earn more.
If someone has already given out their card information, they should: 1. Immediately call EBT customer service (1-877-328-9677) 2. Report the card as compromised 3. Request an immediate hold on the account 4. Ask for a new card to be issued 5. File a benefit theft claim if any funds were taken 6. Get a case number for the report 7. File a police report for identity theft For all CalFresh recipients: Set up EBT text alerts so you get notified instantly of any transactions. This allows you to catch unauthorized use immediately.
Thanks! I'll tell her to do this right now. Didn't know about the text alerts - that's super helpful.
UPDATE: Just checked and my benefits are still there! 😅 The new card should arrive in 7-10 business days. The EBT customer service rep was super helpful and said they've had a lot of these scam calls lately. She also suggested I set up text alerts for any transactions so I can catch anything suspicious right away. Thanks everyone for the quick advice - really saved me from possibly losing my food money for the month!

anybody else notice that CalFresh theft is getting worse?? seems like every week someone on here is posting about stolen benefits. the whole system needs better security!!! regular credit cards have fraud protection but EBT is stuck in the 1990s 🙄

UPDATE: I finally got through to my county office! Used that Claimyr service someone recommended and it worked great - had a caseworker on the phone within 15 minutes. The caseworker was really helpful and walked me through filling out the CF 303 form. She said I need to email them: - The completed form - Copy of police report - Any evidence showing I couldn't have made the purchases She said they'll review it within 10 days but it looks promising since I reported it immediately and the purchases were made far from my home. She also referred me to a local food bank that can help with emergency food while I wait. Thank you everyone for your help! I'll update again when I hear their decision.

•That's great news! Make sure to follow up if you don't hear back within the 10 day timeframe. One more tip: if they initially deny your request, you have the right to appeal. The form for that is called "Request for State Hearing" and you'd have 90 days from the denial to submit it. But hopefully it won't come to that!
