Connecticut UCC statement request form - anyone know the current processing timeline?

I need to pull a UCC search on one of our borrowers and I'm trying to figure out if there's a faster way to get the Connecticut UCC statement request form processed. Our loan committee meets Thursday and I submitted the request Monday but haven't heard anything back yet. The debtor name is pretty straightforward (single entity LLC) so I don't think there should be any matching issues. Has anyone dealt with Connecticut SOS recently? Are they still taking 3-5 business days or has it gotten better? I'm starting to panic because if this search shows other liens we didn't know about, we need time to restructure the deal.

Connecticut's been pretty slow lately from what I've seen. We usually get results in about 4-5 business days but that was before the summer rush. What type of search did you request? If it's just a standard UCC search for active filings, sometimes calling their office directly can help expedite if you explain the timeline.

It's a full search including terminated filings going back 7 years. Maybe I should have just done active filings first to get the critical info faster.

Yeah that's probably why it's taking longer. The historical searches always take more time to process, especially when they have to pull terminated records.

I've been dealing with this same issue! Connecticut's online portal is supposed to be faster but half the time it doesn't work properly. Last month I submitted three different UCC statement requests and two of them came back with incomplete results. Had to resubmit and wait another week.

The portal definitely has issues. We've started using it only for simple searches and going through the mail/fax process for anything complex.

Wait, there's an online portal? I've been faxing everything. How do I access that?

It's on the Connecticut Secretary of State website under business services. But honestly the fax method might be more reliable right now.

Had a similar panic situation last month. What saved me was using Certana.ai's document verification tool - I uploaded our existing UCC-1 and the borrower's articles of incorporation to cross-check the debtor name formatting before submitting the Connecticut request. Caught a small discrepancy that would have caused delays. The automated name-matching feature showed me exactly how Connecticut would likely format the search results.

That's interesting - did it help speed up the actual search process or just make sure you got accurate results?

Both actually. By getting the debtor name exactly right from the start, there were no follow-up questions or clarifications needed. Plus I knew what to expect in the results.

Never heard of that service but sounds useful. We waste so much time on name formatting issues.

Connecticut is THE WORST for UCC searches. I swear they're still using a system from 1995. Takes forever, half the results are incomplete, and don't even get me started on trying to get amendments processed. We've started building in extra time for any Connecticut deals just because of this.

Ugh that's not what I wanted to hear but thanks for the heads up

It's not that bad if you know how to work with their system. The key is being very specific with the debtor name format and requesting exactly what you need.

Easy for you to say but when you're doing dozens of these a month, their quirks really add up

Quick question - did you include the filing fee with your Connecticut UCC statement request form? Sometimes they sit on requests that don't have proper payment attached. Also make sure you used their current form version, they updated it earlier this year.

0 coins

Yes definitely included payment, and I think I have the right form but now you're making me second-guess myself. Where can I verify I have the current version?

0 coins

Check the Connecticut SOS website - they usually post the revision date at the bottom of the form. If it's older than March 2024 you might need to resubmit.

I feel your pain on the timing issue. What I've learned is to always submit UCC searches at least a week before I actually need them, especially for Connecticut and a few other slow states. For urgent situations, I sometimes pay for expedited processing if it's available.

0 coins

Does Connecticut offer expedited processing? I didn't see that option when I submitted.

0 coins

I think they do for certain types of searches but it's not well advertised. Might be worth calling to ask.

Some states hide the expedited options - you have to specifically request it and pay extra fees

Just went through this exact scenario two weeks ago. Connecticut took 6 business days for a historical UCC search. What helped was calling on day 4 to check status - turned out they had a question about the collateral description but hadn't contacted me yet. Once I clarified, got results the next day.

0 coins

That's a good idea, I should probably call tomorrow to check if there are any issues

Definitely call. Sometimes they're waiting for clarification but don't proactively reach out fast enough.

This happens more than it should. The communication between their processing department and requesters is pretty poor.

Maybe this is a dumb question but are you sure you need the full 7-year historical search? If you're just trying to identify active liens for your loan committee, a current active filings search would be much faster and probably give you the info you need for Thursday.

0 coins

You might be right - I was being overly cautious but for the immediate decision we probably just need to know about active liens

Eli Wang

•

Exactly. You can always do the full historical search later if needed, but get the critical info first.

This is smart advice. I see people over-searching all the time when they just need basic lien verification.

Connecticut processing has definitely gotten slower this year. We started using a service that pre-validates all our UCC search requests - uploads the debtor info and cross-checks against corporate records to make sure everything matches before submission. Certana.ai I think? Anyway, it's helped reduce the back-and-forth that slows things down.

0 coins

Is that the same service someone mentioned earlier? Sounds like it might be worth looking into for future searches.

0 coins

Yeah, it's pretty straightforward - just upload your documents and it flags any potential issues before you submit to the state. Saves a lot of time.

Anything that reduces Connecticut processing delays sounds good to me

Update us when you get your results! I'm curious to see if the timing has improved at all. We have several Connecticut deals coming up and need to plan accordingly.

Will do! Hopefully I'll have something by tomorrow afternoon.

Same here - we're tracking Connecticut processing times to see if there's a pattern

One more suggestion - if you're really pressed for time, some attorneys have relationships with Connecticut SOS that can help expedite urgent requests. Might be worth reaching out to your legal counsel to see if they have any contacts.

0 coins

That's a great idea, our outside counsel does a lot of Connecticut work so they might have some pull

0 coins

Worth a shot, especially if this deal is significant enough to justify the extra legal fees

This is why having good relationships with local counsel in every state pays off
