Why didn't my husband receive FSA ID email for FAFSA parent portion?

I'm so confused about the new FAFSA parent contributor process! I created my FSA ID account last week and my son finished his part of the application 3 days ago. We're currently waiting for his SSN verification (fingers crossed it doesn't take forever). But here's what's weird - my husband never received any email prompting him to create his own FSA ID or login. I thought both parents needed to create separate FSA IDs when filing jointly? The instructions seemed to indicate each contributor needs their own account, but he hasn't been contacted at all. Is this normal or did we miss something in the process? His income information is definitely needed since we file taxes jointly. Anyone else run into this issue with multiple parent contributors? Should I just have him create an account anyway? I'm worried about delaying the application further since my son is anxiously waiting for his aid package.

The system doesn't automatically email the other parent. Your husband needs to create his own FSA ID independently. It's not connected to your account creation at all - you both need separate IDs. Go to studentaid.gov and have him set up his account ASAP!

Omg thank you!! The instructions were so confusing. So I just have him go to the website directly? And then what - will there be a way to link his account to our existing application or does he need a special code?

Your husband absolutely needs his own FSA ID for a jointly filed FAFSA. The system doesn't send automatic invites to other contributors - that's one of the most confusing parts of the new FAFSA process. He needs to create his own account, then you'll need to specifically invite him as a contributor through your dashboard. Once you add him as a contributor using his email address, he'll receive an invitation to complete his portion. The verification should continue in parallel - adding him won't restart the process.

Thank you so much for explaining! I'll look for that option in my dashboard. But wait - do I invite him through my dashboard or my son's? My son is the actual applicant, I'm just a contributor too. This whole multi-contributor system is so needlessly complicated!

went thru this exact same thing last month!! the system is ridiculous. your SON has to invite both of you as contributors from HIS account. theres no automatic emails. each parent creates their own separate FSA ID and then gets invited. took us like 3 tries to figure it out lol

Thank you! So it sounds like my son needs to log back in and send the invitation to my husband? I wish they'd made this clearer in the instructions!

To clarify the exact process for multiple parent contributors on FAFSA: 1. Each contributor (student and both parents) creates their own individual FSA ID at studentaid.gov 2. The student initiates the FAFSA application with their FSA ID 3. During the application, the student must manually add each parent contributor by entering their email addresses 4. Each listed contributor then receives an email invitation to complete their portion 5. Each contributor logs in with their individual FSA ID to complete their section If your husband hasn't received an invitation, there are two possibilities: either he wasn't added as a contributor in your son's application, or the invitation email went to spam/was mistyped. Have your son log in and check the contributor section to ensure both parents are listed with correct email addresses.

This is exactly right. Also worth noting that sometimes the invitation emails can be delayed by several hours or even a day. The FAFSA system has been notoriously buggy this year with all the changes.

I spent THREE HOURS trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid last week about this exact issue!! The new contributor system is completely broken. My daughter's application was stuck for weeks because my husband never got an invitation email. We finally used Claimyr to get through to an actual person at FSA (claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ). The agent was able to manually resend the invitation after verifying our information. Turns out there was a glitch in how joint tax filers are processed in the new system. Don't wait for weeks like we did!

Did that really work? I heard about claimyr but wasnt sure if it was legit. Was it worth it to get through? Our FAFSA has been stuck for almost 3 weeks now and my son's deposit deadline is coming up!!!

Absolutely worth it. We got through to FSA in about 15 minutes instead of being on hold for hours. The agent was able to check exactly what was happening with our application and resend the contributor invitation. She also added a note to expedite the processing since we were up against a deadline.

The FAFSA is BROKEN this year! Its ridiculous that they make it so complicated. my wife got an invitation email but i never did. we had to call like 6 times before someone explained that my email address had a TYPO when my daughter entered it. check that your sons application has your husbands email entered CORRECTLY. one wrong letter and the whole thing gets stuck!!!

That's a good point! I'll have my son check the email address he entered for his dad. Maybe there's a simple typo causing all this confusion.

btw don't stress too much about the SSN verification. My daughter's took almost 2 weeks but then suddenly completed overnight. The status updates on the site are super delayed too so sometimes it's done but doesn't show updated for like another day.

That's reassuring! We're getting close to his school's priority deadline so every day matters. Hoping it resolves soon!

As a follow-up to my earlier comment, I want to clarify something important: Even if your husband creates his FSA ID now, he still needs to be officially invited through the application portal. Having an FSA ID alone doesn't automatically connect him to your son's application. Here's what your son needs to do: 1. Log into studentaid.gov with his FSA ID 2. Go to the FAFSA application in progress 3. Navigate to the "Contributors" section 4. Add your husband's email address 5. Save the changes Only then will your husband receive the invitation email to complete his portion. This is a common point of confusion with the new FAFSA process.

Thank you for the detailed steps! I just texted my son to log in and check the contributor section. Fingers crossed this resolves it!

maybe he got excluded bc your son is only eligible under one parent? my nephew only needed my sister's info bc they determined he was only her dependent for some reason even tho she's married. something about the FAFSA selecting which parent contributes more financially? idk the new system is weird

This is incorrect information. For dependent students with married parents who file jointly, both parents MUST provide their information on the FAFSA. The system doesn't automatically exclude one parent based on contribution amounts. The new FAFSA still requires information from all parents in the household who file jointly.

UPDATE: We figured it out! It turns out my son had entered my husband's email address incorrectly (switched two letters). Once we fixed that and resent the invitation, my husband got the email within minutes. He's created his FSA ID and is completing his portion now. Thanks everyone for your help! The FAFSA process is definitely not user-friendly this year.

Glad you got it figured out! Such a simple mistake but causes so much stress. Hope the rest of your FAFSA process goes smoothly!

This is exactly why I always recommend double-checking email addresses during the contributor setup. A small typo can cause weeks of delays. Glad you resolved it!

Great to see you got it resolved! This is such a common issue with the new FAFSA system. For anyone else reading this thread who might be dealing with similar problems, I'd also recommend having your student screenshot or write down exactly what they entered for each parent's email address before submitting. That way if there are delays, you can quickly spot any typos without having to dig back through the application. The new contributor system is definitely more complicated than the old FAFSA, but once you get through it the first time, it makes more sense. Hope your son gets his aid package soon!
